【題目】In December, after her third fall in a few months, Doris Carpenter was admitted to Rochdale infirmary(養(yǎng)老院). Carpenter, 84, lives alone, but she is increasingly unsteady on her feet, and if she falls, she hasn’t the strength to get up again. Previously, a call to 111 would call nursing staff who could put her back into a chair, but it was increasingly clear she wasn’t coping, and needed more support.

This isn’t like any old hospital, however. Today Carpenter isn’t in bed but sitting in a chair, dressed in her own clothes, a fat Dan Brown book in front of her. “You don’t feel like you’re in hospital,” she says.

Two side rooms have been furnished with small groups of tables and chairs, with bright tablecloths. Those patients who are able can help themselves to food at mealtimes and sit with others to eat, or go to the library to select another page-turner. A physiotherapist helps Carpenter with her painful back, and is working to help improve her confidence on stairs.

Previously, an elderly person in Carpenter’s condition would most likely have ended up in an acute hospital ward(病房).

There, very frequently, people of her age would get stuck, and many would go downhill fast.

“They come into hospital, and our model in the NHS is to put them to bed,” says Steve Taylor, the divisional director for community services. “Put your pyjamas on, you stay in that bed, we will feed you and toilet you.”

Shockingly quickly, he says, patients can lose what abilities they previously had. “And then, when it comes time to discharge you, you can no longer walk.”

This is probably the biggest challenge facing the NHS – the problem of an older population, the long years of illness that many of us will face and a fragile social care system underpinning it all.

1What’s the main idea of the first paragraph?

A. Carpenter often falls at home.

B. No one looks after Carpenter.

C. There is something wrong with Carpenter’s legs.

D. Carpenter is in such poor condition that she had to go to hospital.

2How might Carpenters feel living in the new hospital?

A. Lonely. B. Desperate.

C. Relaxed. D. Curious.

3In which section of a newspaper can you find this text?

A. Society. B. Technology.

C. Family. D. Medicine.

Some of the worlds most famous musicians recently gathered in Paris and New Orleans to celebrate the first annual International Jazz Day. UNESCO( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying(聯(lián)合) voice across cultures.

Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations.

Its Jason Morans job to help change that. As the Kennedy Centers artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture.

Jazz seems like its not really a part of the American appetite, Moran tells National Public Radios reporter Neal Conan. What Im hoping to accomplish is that mu generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and write anymore. Its actually color, and its actually digital.

Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost. The music cant be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same, says Moran.

Last year, Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats Wallers music for a dance party, Just to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it is concert music, says Moran. For me, its the recontextualization. In music, where does the emotion(情感) lie? Are we, as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts? Sometimes we lose sight that the music has a wider context, says Moran, So I want to continue those dialogue. Those are the things I want to foster.

【題目】根據(jù)短文理解,選擇正確答案。
When US musician Bob Dylan was announced as the winner of this year's Nobel Prize for literature last month, many people took to social media to suggest that Leonard Cohen was the only other living songwriter who deserved(值得)the honor.
Sadly, on Nov 7, the deep-voiced Canadian artist died at the age of 82.
Many tributes(稱贊)were written for Cohen, who had just released his 14th album, You Want It Darker, on Oct 21st. “Leonard Cohen is as important today as he was in the 1960s,” Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on in a statement. “ His ability to describe human emotion made him one of the most influential and lasting musicians ever.”
Cohen's most famous song, Hallenlujah, in which he compared physical love to a need for spiritual connection, has been recorded hundreds of times by different musician since it was first released in 1984.
And Cohen's song Bird on a Wire(1969) could be considered a perfect epitaph(墓志銘)that he wrote for himself. As the song's first line goes, “Like a bird on a wire, like a drunk in midnight choir(合唱團(tuán)), I have tired in my way to be free.”
“Cohen writes words that explain what it means to be human. I've read poetry that has as much beauty as Cohen's work, but in the world of music, Cohen is a rarity,” US singer Jennifer Warnes told Austin American-Statesman newspaper. ‘He describes things that go on inside a heart and what it feels like to be here.”
Along with his spirituality, Cohen's dry, deep voice also helped his popularity. In 2006 he spoke with the NPR radio station about how he got his interesting voice—apparently it was “500 tons of whiskey and a million cigarettes.”
But he never forgot to work on the instruments that made up his songs, even though he was most famous for his lyrics (歌詞)and voice.
“There is no difference between a poem and a song,” Cohen said in 1969 interview with the New York Times newspaper. “Some were songs first and some were poems first and some were written at the same time. All of my writing has guitars behind it, even the novels.”
“When people talk about Cohen, they fail to mention the melodies(旋律), which to me, along with his lyrics, are his greatest genius,” Bob Dylan told the New York magazine.” They give a lift to every one of his songs. As far a I know, no one comes close to this in modern music.”
(1)What do Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan have in common?
A.They have both written beautiful lyrics.
B.They have both achieved outstanding things in literature
C.They both came from the same country
D.They were both considered the possible winners of Nobel Prize in literature.
(2)People often speak highly of Cohen for many things except for_____.
A.his voice
B.his melodies
C.his lyrics
D.his influence
(3)What can be inferred from the article?
A.Hallenlujah is the most performed song in the world
B.Bird on a Wire was written to describe Cohen's personality
C.Bob Dylan took inspiration from Cohen's work
D.Cohen said his unhealthy habits contributed to his unique voice.
(4)Which of the following words best describe Cohen?
A.Humorous and optimistic
B.Sensitive(敏感的)and moody
C.Insightful(深刻的)and talented
D.Expressive and rebellious(叛逆的)

【題目】“Birds” and “airports” are two words that, paired together, don’t normally paint the most harmonious picture. So it really raises some eyebrows when China announces plans to build an airport that’s for birds.

Described as the world’s first-ever bird airport, the proposed Lingang Bird Sanctuary(保護(hù)區(qū)) in the northern coastal city of Tianjin is,of course, not an actual airport. Rather, it’s a wetland preserve specifically designed to accommodate hundreds — even thousands — of daily takeoffs and landings by birds traveling along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. Over 50 species of migratory (遷徙的)water birds, some endangered, will stop and feed at the protected sanctuary before continuing their long journey along the flyway.

Located on a former landfill site, the 61-hectare (150-acre) airport is also open to human travelers. (Half a million visitors are expected annually.) However, instead of duty-free shopping, the main attraction for non-egg-laying creatures at Tianjin’s newest airport will be a green-roofed education and research center, a series of raised “observation platforms” and a network of scenic walking and cycling paths and trails totaling over 4 miles.

The proposed Bird Airport will be a globally significant sanctuary for endangered migratory bird species, while providing new green lungs for the city of Tianjin,” Adrian McGregor of Australian landscape architecture firm McGregor Coxall explained of .the design. Frequently blanketed in smog so thick that it has shut down real airports, Tianjin is a city — China’s fourth most populous — that would certainly benefit from a new pair of healthy green lungs.

1The underlined phrase 4 “non-egg-laying creatures” in Paragraph 3 refers to ________?

A. endangered water birds B. planes

C. visitors D. designers

2What do we know about the airport according to the passage?

A. It is located on a landfill site.

B. People cannot watch birds up close here.

C. It provides migratory birds with food and shelter.

D. It functions as an actual airport and a wetland preserve at the same time.

3What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. Tianjin will win worldwide fame in the future.

B. Tianjin will be able to accommodate more people.

C. The airport will become a permanent home for birds.

D. Tianjin’ air quality will improve thanks to the airport.

4What is this passage mainly about?

A. China is to open the first Bird Airport.

B. Airports turn into green lungs.

C. Birds are no longer enemies to airports.

D. Airports shut down and open up.

My father was in the military,so we moved frequently.Being shy,I didn't make friends. What's more,I grew up in a household where grades, image and how others saw our family were very important. In our household a "C" was unacceptable,a "B" should have been an "A" and an "A" meant the lesson was too easy.I was too skinny,my sister was too fat and my brother's lips and ears were too big for his tiny head.

To stop pleasing others is easier said than done. It's a long process, one in which I am consistently working to perfect. The turning point for me came shortly after I got married. The very first thing we did to end the cycle of catering to others was develop our own identity as individuals and then as a couple. And then we developed a strong set of core(核心)values and a vision for our future. The third and one of the most valuable things we did during this process was develop our own personal influence on others and we valued deeply the opinions of the wiser and more successful people around us.

Besides,we should understand that sometimes helping people actually hurts them.Struggle is necessary to success.Struggle strengthens character, making people determined. So sometimes allowing people to struggle is the best thing you can do for them.

A. Satisfied B. Angry.

C. Happy D. Guilty

A. He grew up doing a lot of housework.
