     Dr. Julie Coulton, a British psychologist, focuses her research on the extraordinary function of the
play in the physical and spiritual development of children and Martti Bergson from the University of
Helsinki shows that playing outside, in the open air, contributes to a better development of the brain.
     Thus parents must encourage their children to spend as much time as possible in the open air, and
at the same time, to ask schools and kindergartens to assure the small a playground outside. Recent
statistics (數(shù)據(jù)) and studies show an alarming increase of the number of hours spent by children in
front of the TV and the computer and a decrease of the time spent outside.
     As a consequence more and more children suffer from eye problems and have to wear glasses.
Also the problem of fatness among children concerns many parents who don't know what to do

     Children need a space where to develop their creativity mid parents should encourage them all the
time. Too many rules hold back the child's personality and creativity and prevent them to develop the
desire to know, to find out, to learn.
     If you tell your child so many times: "Don't do that, don't mess the room, don't go there ...", he
will lose the desire to do something, anything. Parents must watch their children without suffocating
(窒息) them. Should you consider they mustn't do that or this, you have to logically explain them your
reasons and they will understand.
     Through playing a child learns how to communicate, how to take decisions. Playing is connected
to the intellectual, emotional and social progress of the child. Playing lets your children learn how to
express his feelings.

Giving life and hope

    Orphans(孤兒)whose parents died of AIDS in Henan Province have been given new hope．Last week the provincial government answered the children's cries by promising 60 million yuan to improve schools，orphanages(孤兒院)and living conditions．But without the efforts of Dr．Gao Yaojie，these cries may never have been heard．

    “I’m a doctor and it’s my duty to cure diseases and save lives，”said the 77-year-old grandmother．Gao was named one of the 2003 People of Year on February 20 by CCTV after millions of people took part in an online poll. But in 1996，when she started to promote AIDS awareness，using money from her own pocket，her actions were widely misunderstood．

    “Although some of the children were born with born with HIV，90 percent of them were not infected(被感染)，”Gao said．“But people still reject(排斥)them．Many orphans change their names after finding a foster family(領(lǐng)養(yǎng)家庭)．”

    The horror of Henan's AIDS problem became known in 1996．Frequent and unsafe blood-selling by poor farmers in the late 1980s and early 1990s had caused HIV to spread through dirty needles and infected blood use．As a doctor，Gao believed she should help：over the last eight years she has visited over 1000 AIDS and HIV patients and published thousands of pamphlets on AIDS awareness．With her help，hundreds of orphans have returned to school or found foster families．

    “It's a disaster for the whole nation，not only for those innocent(無辜的)patients and their families，”she explained．Gao is delighted that so many childless families offer to foster orphans．But there is still much that can be done to support these children．“I hope that warm-hearted high school students will also reach out and offer a helping hand，”she said．

　　The timing of the ceremony has only been disturbed on three occasions．The first was in 1938 when serious floods in Los Angeles delayed the awards by one week．Then in 1968 the ceremony was moved from April 8 to April 10 out of respect for Dr．Martin Luther King, who had been assassinated(暗殺)a few days earlier．Another assassination－a failed attempt on President Ronald Reagan－saw the Oscars delayed by 24 hours in 1981．

　　That “Monday morning feeling” could be a crushing pain in the chest which leaves you sweating and gasping for breath．Recent research from Germany and Italy shows that heart attacks are more common on Monday mornings and doctors blame the stress of returning to work after the weekend break．

　　The risk of having a heart attack on any given day should be one in seven, but a six year study helped by researchers at the Free University of Berlin of more than 2600 Germans showed that the average person had a 20 percent higher chance of having a heart attack on a Monday than on any other day．

　　Working Germans are particularly not protected against attack, with a 33 percent higher risk at the beginning of the working week．Non-workers, by comparison, appear to be no more at risk on a Monday than any other day．

　　A study of 11 000 Italians proved 8 a. m. on a Monday morning as the most stressful time for the heart, and both studies showed that Sunday is the least stressful day, with fewest heart attacks in both countries．

　　The finding could lead to a better understanding of what is the immediate cause of heart attacks, according to Dr．Stefan Willich of the Free University．“We know a lot about long term risk factors such as smoking and cholesterol(膽固醇)but we don’t know what actually causes heart attacks, so we can’t give clear advice on how to prevent them.” he said．

　　Monday mornings have a double helping of stress for the working body as it makes a rapid change from sleep to activity and from the relaxing weekend to the pressures of work．

　　“When people get up, their blood pressure and heart rate go up and there are hormonal(荷爾蒙)changes in their bodies,” Willich explained．“All these things can have an unfavorable effect in the blood system and increase the risk of a clot(血凝塊)which will cause a heart attack．”

　　“When people return to work after a weekend off, the pace of their life changes．They have a higher workload, more stress, more anger and more physical activities,” said Willich．

Well, a lot of research is being conducted in this area, but so far, the brain scanning equipment and corresponding computer programs haven’t been able to actually read thoughts. In one experiment, test subjects（受試者）were connected to scanning equipment and shown two numbers on a screen. They were then asked to choose between adding or subtracting（減）the two numbers. Using this method, researchers were able to follow brain processes and make the correct assumptions（假設(shè)）70 percent of the time. It’s not quite mind reading, but it’s certainly a first step.

It’s because of how the brain works. The brain is trained to know what to pay attention to and what to ignore. It causes us to ignore physical feelings we expect to happen, but it causes a mild panic reaction when there is an unexpected feeling. For example, you don’t notice how your shoulder feels while you’re walking down the street. But if someone comes up behind you and touches you lightly on the shoulder, you may jump in fear. It’s that unexpected part that causes the tickle reaction.
