19.The little boy wanted to go skating on the frozen river alone,but her father told him         .( 。
A.not toB.not do itC.not to doD.do not do it

分析 這個(gè)小男孩想獨(dú)自在結(jié)冰的河上滑冰,但是他的父親告訴他不要這樣做.

解答 答案是A.本題考查動(dòng)詞不定式的省略.動(dòng)詞不定式省略的規(guī)則:英語(yǔ)中為了避免重復(fù),常常省去與上文相同的動(dòng)詞,只保留不定式符號(hào)to(助動(dòng)詞be和have必須保留);本題完整的表達(dá)為"his father told him not to skate on the frozen river alone",省略重復(fù)的"skate on the frozen river alone",故答案選擇 A.

16.Characters in novels don't always do what the writer wants them to do.Sometimes they cause trouble,take on lives of their own,or even work against the writer.It's not just a problem for inexperienced authors:famed children's novelist Roald Dahl said he got the main character in his book Matilda so"wrong"that when he'd finished his first Version,he threw it away and started again.
Of course it's not the characters'fault.The problem lies with the author.Take Stephen King,who admitted that writing working-class characters is more difficult nowadays because his own circumstances have changed."It is definitely harder,"King said."When I wrote Carrie many years ago,I was one step away from physical labour."
This is also true for characters'ages,added King."When you have small children,it is easy to write young characters because you observe them and you have them in your life all the time.But your kids grow up,it's been harder for me to write about this little 12-year-old girl in my new book because my roodels are gone."
For other authors,such as Karen Fowler,there's one quality that can stop a character in its tracks:boredom."I had particular problems with the main character in my historical novel Sister Noon,"she says."She had attitudes about race and religion that seemed appropriate to me for her time and class,but they were not attitudes I liked.Eventually I grew quite bored with her.You can write a book about a character you dislike or a character you disagree with,but I don't think you can write a book about a character who bores you."
According to Neel Mukherjee,it was Adinath,a character in The Lives of Others,who made him work the hardest."I think I struggled because it's difficult to write a character whose most prominent personal feature is weakness,as Adinath's is,without making that feature define him,"Mukherjee says.But a troublesome character is far from an unwelcome guest,he continues,arguing that"when characters work against the author they come alive and become unpredictable".
"That is a fantastic thing to happen,"Mukherjee says."I celebrate it.It is one of the great,lucky gifts given to a writer."
32.What can we infer about Stephen King's book Carrie?C
A.It was his most difficult book to write.
B.It was the first successful novel King wrote.
C.There were few children featured in the story.
D.Some of its main characters were working class.
33.Why did Karen Fowler have trouble writing the main character in her novel Sister Noon?D
A.She disagreed with the character's attitudes.
B.The age difference between the two was too large.
C.She found the character very uninteresting.
D.The historical setting made accuracy difficult.
34.What does Neel Mukherjee think of his difficult-to-write characters?B
A.They are a sign that the story is not realistic.
B.They are often the most interesting.
C.They should be praised by all authors.
D.They need to be researched more thoroughly.
35.In which part of the newspaper would you expect to find the passage?B
A.Careers.
B.Culture.
C.Entertainment.

14.Yawning is so contagious(具有傳染性) that chimpanzees can"catch"it from cartoons,according to research.
Scientists from Emory University in Atlanta,US,have discovered that a cartoon of a yawning chimp will stimulate(刺激) real chimps to yawn. They describe in the Royal Society journal,Proceedings B,how this could assist in the future study of empathy(移情作用). The work could also help explain if and how computer games might cause children to imitate what they see on screen.
Previous studies have already shown contagious yawning in chimpanzees-stimulated by video-recorded footage of yawns.
"We wanted to expand on that,"explained Matthew Campbell,a researcher from Emory University's Yerkes National Primate Research Center and lead author of the study."We're interested in using cartoon for presenting stimuli to animals,because we can control all the features of what we show them,"he continued.
Although Dr Campbell doesn't think the chips were"fooled"by the cartoons into thinking they were looking at real chimps,he explained that there was evidence that chimpanzees"process animated(動(dòng)畫(huà)的) faces the same way they process photographs of faces".
He said:"It's not a real chimpanzee, but it kind of looks like a chimpanzee, and they're responding to that."
He and his team, including Devyn Carter who designed the cartoons, showed the animals the yawning sequences.
"We also had the cartoons doing other movements with their mouths that the chimps often do,''he said."The chimps showed a lot more yawning during the yawn video when the control videos were playing."
He told BBC News that the only way he and his colleagues could explain the"very strong difference"they saw was that seeing the yawns was making the animals yawn.

72. According to the passage,the scientists have found thatB.
A. yawning is a contagious facial expression among chimps
B. chimps will imitate a cartoon chimp who is yawning
C. chimps are able to understand cartoons very well
D. chimps like watching cartoons very much
73. According to the passage we can learn thatA.
A. yawning on both cartoon videos and pictures can make chimps yawn
B. Devyn Carte led the study about contagious yawning
C. children will also be stimulated to yawn by the videos of chimps
D. people can control all the features of animals through cartoon
74. By studying the action of chimps,the scientists hope toC.

B. learn how chimps use their brains to study
C. control the actions and behaviors of animals
D. create more charming cartoon characters

4.Will Nanfang University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen announce a new beginning for China's higher education reform? It's too early to answer. But its presence is challenging the Ministry of Education.Even without the approval of the ministry it seems that the school is determined to move forward and enroll 50 students,so-called child prodigies(奇才),to begin classes on March l,2011.On graduating in 2015,these students will receive a diploma unauthorized by the Ministry of Education-unlike the students of their age from the state-run universities.
The school is committed to modeling itself on Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, but if the government will not approve the school, the situation could cause a lot of trouble for those 50 students if they want to do graduate studies at other higher learning institutions.Other schools could turn their applications down for their unauthorized diplomas.
The difficulties, however, have not frightened students and their parents away.On Dec.18,2010 more than 1,000 students and their parents visited Nanfang University of Science and Technology for interviews.
Private investment marks the school out from other higher learning institutions in the nation. Not a penny comes from the government. So the government will have no voice in how the school will be run.
The Ministry of Education has published a comprehensive plan for education reform and development between 2011 and 2020.The goal is to make China's higher education internationally competitive. To accomplish this goal, the government should have the courage to let the educators who have big ideas try them out.The ministry should have applauded the independence the school in Shenzhen has shown and encouraged more to do likewise.
