It is Mother’s Day today. Though it’s a western festival, it’s popular in China now.
Mom has a full-time job, so she has to do most of the houseworks. She is a great mother. Both Dad or I planned to do something on Mother’s Day. We get up early in the morning. Dad cleaned the house, and then went on shopping. When he returned , I found a bunch of flowers in her hand. I asked Mom to stay in the sitting room and I cooked in kitchen. The dishes what I cooked were Mom’s favoritest. At dinner, we said to her, “Happy Mother’s Day!”Mom was grateful and moving.

On Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicted that 42% of Americans could be overweight by 2030. Our expanding waistlines lead to not only a medical problem, but according to a recent article In The New York Times, it could also endanger personal safety in some situations—in an airplane crash, for example.
The New York Times’ Christen Negroni reports that engineers and scientists are questioning whether airplane seats are adequately constructed to protect overweight travelers. Government standards for airplane seat strength(強(qiáng)度)— first set moe than 60 years ago — require that the seats be made for a passenger weighing 170 pounds (77kg). Today, the average American man weighs nearly 194 pounds (88kg) and the average woman 165 pounds (75kg). Negroni reports:
“If a heavier person completely fills seat, the seat is not likely to behave as intended during a crash,” said Robert Salazar, the leading scientist at the Center for Applied Biomechanics at the University of Virginia. “The energy absorption that is built into the aircraft seat is likely to be overpowered and the passengers will not be protected properly.”
“Nor would the injury be limited to that passenger only,” Dr. Salzar said. “If a seat or a seat belt fails,” he said, “those people who are seated nearby could be endangered from ‘the uncontrolled movements of the passenger’.”
Most complaints about airplane seats focus on their lack of comfort and high ticket price, and whether overweight passengers should be made to buy two seats. But The New York Times’ article brings up another reason to feel anxious about flying. Investigators of the issue got in touch with the airplane seat and seat belt makers, but they refused to comment on the problem. Experts agreed that crash testing should be done with overweight dummies (人體模型). Both airplane seats and seat belts should be tested, they said.
Fortunately, however, according to Nora Marshall, a senior adviser at the National Transportation Safety Board, the board’s investigators have never seen an accident involving a commercial plane in which the weight of a passenger was a problem.

2.Robert Salzar would probably agree that .
A. overweight passengers should buy two seats
B. the government should help produce safer planes
C. standards for airplane seat strength should be raised
D. passengers should know how to protect themselves
3.We can learn from the text that .
A. airplane seat makers have taken action now
B. there are few complaints about airplane seats
C. those seate near the overweight may suffer too
D. only a small number of airplane accidents involve the overweight
4.What is the best title for the text?
A. Why Do Passengers Feel Anxious about Flying?
B. Will 42% of Americans Be OVERWEIGHT BY 2030?
C. When Will the Overweight Enjoy Their Flight?

Future history books might record that we were robbed of the use of our eyes. In our hurry to get from one place to another, we fail to see anything on the way, Air travel gives you a bird’s eye view of the world ---or even less if the wing of the aircraft happens to get in your way. When you travel by car or train, you are moving so quickly that you do not see the countryside clearly. Car drivers are forever thinking about going on and on. They never want to stop. Is it the great motorways that attract them, or what? And as for sea travel, it hardly deserves mentioning. It is perfectly summed up in the words of the old song: “I joined the navy to see the world, and what did I see? I saw the sea.” You mention the place names in the world like EI Dorado, Kabul and someone is sure to say, “I have been there”, meaning I drove through it at 100 miles an hour on the way to somewhere else.
When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing: you live mainly in the future because you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at some other place. But actual arrival, when it is achieved, is meaningless. You want to move on again. By traveling like this, you suspend (中止) all experience; the present stops being a reality: you might just as well be dead.
The traveler on foot, on the other hand, lives constantly in the present. For him traveling and arriving are one and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he makes. H e experiences, the present moment with his eyes, his ears and the whole of his body. At the end of his journey he feels a delicious physical tiredness. Satisfying sleep will be his: the just reward of all true travelers.

A. They get a good view of the landscape.
B. They make full use of their eyes.
C. They fail to see the scenery with their heart.
D. The y are eager to see everything on the way.
3.Why does “the present”mean “nothing ”when we travel at high speeds?
A. Because we change our aims all the time.
B. Because we are eager to go to another place.
C. Because we are looking forward to the future life.
D. Because we cannot enjoy the experience we have had.
4.What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Different travelers B. The use of eyes
C. Ways of traveling D. True traveling

I grew up in a house where the TV was seldom turned on and with one wall in my bedroom entirely lined with bookshelves, most of my childhood was spent on books I could get hold of. In fact, I grew up thinking of reading as natural as breathing and books unbelievably powerful in shaping perspectives (觀點(diǎn)) by creating worlds we could step into, take part. in. and live in.
With this unshakable belief, I, at fourteen, decided to become a writer. Here too, reading became useful. Every writer starts off knowing that he has something to say, but being unable to find the right ways to say it. He has to find his own voice by reading widely and discovering which parts of the writers he agrees or disagrees with, or agrees with so strongly that it reshapes his own world. He cannot write without loving to read, because only through reading other people's writing can one discover what works, what doesn't and, in the end, together with lots of practice, what voice he has.
Now I am in college, and have come to realize how important it is to read fiction (文學(xué)作品).As a law student, my reading is in fact limited to subject matter-the volume (量) of what I have to read for classes every week means there is little time to read anything else. Such reading made it all the clearer to me that I live in a very small part in this great place called life. Reading fiction reminds me that there is life beyond my own. It allows me to travel across the high seas and along the Silk Road, all from the comfort of my own armchair, to experience, though secondhand, exciting experiences that I wouldn't necessarily be able to have in my lifetime.
1.What can be inferred about the author as a child?
A. He never watched TV. B. He read what he had to.
C. He found reading unbelievable. D. He considered reading part of his life.
2.The underlined word "voice" in the second paragraph most probably means "_______".
A. an idea B. a sound quality
C. a way of writing D. a world to write about
3.What effect does reading have on the author?
A. It helps him to realize his dream.
B. It opens up a wider world for him.
C. It makes his college life more interesting.
D. It increases his interest in worldwide travel.
4.. Which of the following can be the best title of this text?
A. What do I read? B. How do I read?
C. Why do I read? D. When do I read?

You may have done something wrong, but now you're willing to make things right. 1. If you want to make sure that your apology is effective and doesn’t cause even more hurt, follow the advice below to write a fantastic apology.
State what your letter is about. It’s a good idea to begin by letting them know that this letter is an apology. If you don’t want them to be confused about why you’re writing or what you’re going to say, say something like: “2.”.
State your mistake. Now that you’re apologizing, say what you’re apologizing for and why it was incorrect. 3.. By fully putting it out there in the open, the person that you’re apologizing to will know that you do really understand what you did.
4. This is one of the most important parts of an apology but can be the hardest to say. What you do need to do is admit your responsibility for your mistake openly and without reservation(保留). You might have had good reasons for doing what you did but that shouldn’t keep you from saying that your actions caused someone to get hurt.
Offer a solution that will lead to change. Just saying that you’re sorry isn’t really enough. What really gives an apology some power is finding a way to solve the problem in the future. 5..
