[1] The air we breathe is so freely available that we take it for granted. Yet without it we could not survive more than a few minutes. For the most part, the same air is available to everyone, and everyone needs it. Some people use the air to sustain them while they sit around and feel sorry for themselves. Others breathe in the air and use the energy it provides to make a magnificent life for themselves.
[2] Opportunity is just the same. It is everywhere. Opportunity is so freely available that we take it for granted. Yet opportunity alone is not enough to create success. Opportunity must be seized and acted upon in order to have value. So many people are so anxious to “get in” on a “ground floor opportunity”, as if the opportunity will do all the work. That’s impossible.
[3] Just as                                   , you need opportunity to succeed. It takes more than just breathing in the fresh air of opportunity, however. You must make use of that opportunity.’’ That’s not up to the opportunity. That’s up to you. It doesn’t matter what “floor” the opportunity is on. What matters is what you do with it.

Poverty today is a major global issue. Although there are all kinds of definitions used to explain it, in simple words, it means the inability of a person to even get his basic needs of food, shelter, clothing, safe drinking water, health and education. Poverty can be found in each and every corner of the world, although the causes may differ from country to country. Given below are the main causes of poverty in the world today.
Overpopulation is one of the main causes behind the threatening of poverty on an individual level as well as a social level. This is simple math: If there are more mouths to feed and less income, definitely much will remain poor.
Another theory which is used as an explanation for poverty is lack of education. If you look at any of the underdeveloped countries, you will find that the level of education there is very low. Lack of education means lack of employment opportunities, thus leading to unemployment coupled with poverty in the future.
Moving away from one’s own homeland to another city or country in search of employment leads to poverty too. It may take these people a lot of time to find jobs. Meanwhile, they live in bad conditions. The cost of living in the city or country is most of the time too high for them.
There may be other causes of poverty like the change in business. For example, in America, a couple of decades ago, heavy industry flourished ,which employed a lot of African-American people. But now, the focus is more on information technology and health care, both of which employ only skilled and trained people. This has led to unemployment among African-Americans.
Poverty has many ill effects on society. That’s why steps should be taken to get rid of it!

Ugly, a male cat, loved three things in this world: fighting, eating garbage, and, shall we say, love. To start with, he had only one eye and where the other should have been was a big hole. He was also missing his ear on the same side, and his left foot appeared to have been badly broken at one time, making him look like he was always turning the corner. Every time someone saw Ugly there was the same reaction.“That’s one UGLY cat!”So, all the children were warned not to touch him. The adults threw rocks at him. Whenever he was treated badly, he would curl his thin body around feet in forgiveness or begged for love.
One day Ugly shared his love with the neighbor’s dog. The dog's owner did not respond kindly. From my apartment I could hear his screams, and I tried to rush to his aid. By the time I got to where he was lying, it was apparent Ugly’s sad life was almost at an end. As I picked him up and tried to carry him home, I could hear his heavy breath, and could feel him struggling. It must be hurting him terribly.
However, Ugly, in so much pain, suffering and obviously dying, was trying to get closer to me. He turned his one golden eye towards me, and even in the greatest pain Ugly was asking only for a little affection. At that time I thought Ugly was the most beautiful, loving creature I had ever seen. Never once did he try to bite or scratch me, or even try to get away from me. Ugly just looked up at me completely trusting in me to relieve his pain.
Ugly died in my arms before I could get inside, but I sat and held him for a long time afterwards. Ugly taught me more about giving and compassion than a thousand books, lectures, or talk show specials ever could, and for that I will always be thankful. It is time for me to learn to love truly and deeply.

[1] Sooner or later everyone has to write something-a thank-you note, a report at a meeting, a complaint or an apology. If you have writing assignment(作業(yè)) in school, or if you still fear to put pen to paper, facing that empty page is almost as frightening as you are facing a tiger. How to write it? There is no mystery. Clear writing is just clear thinking. Here are some techniques for you.
[2] Thinking on paper
Sit down with a pencil and paper or at the computer screen and start outlining(概述,略述) what you want to say, why it is important, why it matters, and what its impact is on the reader. Just get the ideas down. The next step is to go back and put them in order.
[3] Writing first sentence
Try to make your first sentence catch the reader’s eyes, because ________, the reader is not going to read on. Get a good, clear lead sentence that summarizes your points and answers the reader’s question “What is in it for me?” if you can not do it in one sentence, then do it in two or three but keep them short.
[4] Remembering the reader
Short, simple words are better than long words. Short sentences are better than long sentences. Remember that the goal is to communicate, not to express yourselves. Most people are so devoted to what they want to say that they forget somebody else has to be able to read it. Too much information makes you lose readers before they get to the meat(實質(zhì)) of what you want to say.
[5] Reading and rewriting
Read out what you have written loud, and listen for any awkward(笨拙的) sentences. All good writers read, then rewrite. Back off a little bit from what you are writing. It is an old standard, but if you can, write something and come back a day later.

For many the idea of your dream home is not buying a bigger home, but a home that you have built by yourself. A house that is unique and fit for your tastes and your lifestyle. It sounds great but where do you begin to design your dream home? Here is a quick guide that can help you make your dreams come true.
The first step is to get an idea of what type of home you want. You can get inspiration from others. Drive around to neighbourhoods that have the styles of homes you like and take pictures. You can also cut out pictures from magazines, newspapers, or print out pictures you find on the Internet.
The next step will be to make two lists of items for yourself. The first list will be those items or features that you feel your new home must have, such as granite counter tops or a hot water heater. The second list will be those items or features that are on your wish list like a fireplace or slate floors.
At this point you will probably have a good idea of what your dream home will look like, so you will need to seek some professional help. You will need to hire an architect to put your ideas down on paper. You may need to interview a few different architects to find one that you are comfortable with. Make sure whomever you choose for final drawings has a full understanding of local building codes and zoning bylaws. In any ease your final plan will need to be approved by the city and a building permit must be obtained before any construction can begin.
It is time to look for a contractor(承包人). Whichever way you can do it in, be sure you are comfortable with your contractor and you have got references from his past clients. Remember the more homework you do in the beginning, the more enjoyable the process will be.

When friends and family heard what I was planning, they wondered if I had gone crazy. But here I was in New Mexico, working at a youth farm as a volunteer. I wanted to give back to society. The farm is one of the nonprofit (非盈利的) camps in New Mexico. Founded in 1998, it provides a free camp for the kids whose families are poor. My main responsibility was to look after them.
More than anything, I was excited. I had the opportunity to influence these kids’ lives. I could help them have fun. At the beginning, I couldn’t help feeling nervous. By the end of the first week, I had felt completely at ease. Each child listened to me and enjoyed the games we played. This farm was their heaven, and each child truly felt beatific.
Harrison was probably the most troubled child I saw all summer. He couldn’t deal with anger. As soon as I met him, it was clear that he’d never been shown kindness or patience. His temper would unexpectedly fly out of control. He refused to play games with us and hit other kids at the very start. He was always worried that I would shout at him or hit him. I told him that I would never do that. And I simply educated him to be a kind and patient boy. After Harrison’s going home, his mother wrote to tell me how differently her son reacted to others and how much gentler he had become.
The kid was not the only one that changed. I changed, too. I grew to appreciate my caring family. I became more patient, too. My eyes were also opened to the different situations people live in. Giving myself to show them love was the most meaningful part of my service. As the saying goes, love is, above all, the gift of oneself.

[1] Dogs are social animals and without proper training, they will behave like wild animals. They will spoil your house, destroy your belongings, bark excessively, fight other dogs and even bite you. Nearly all behavior problems are perfectly normal dog activities that occur at the wrong time or place or are directed at the wrong thing. The key to preventing or treating behavior problems is learning to teach the dog to redirect its normal behavior to outlets(發(fā)泄) that are acceptable in the home environment.
[2] One of the best things you can do for your dog and yourself is to obedience train (馴服) it. Obedience training doesn't solve all behavior problems, but it is the foundation for solving just about any problem. Training opens up a line of communication between you and your dog. Effective communication is necessary to instruct your dog about what you want it to do.
[3] Training is also an easy way to establish the social rank order. When your dog obeys a simple request of “come here, sit,” it is showing obedience and respect for you. It is not necessary to establish yourself as top dog or leader of the dog pack (群) by using extreme steps. You can
teach your dog its subordinate (從屬的) role by teaching it to show obedience to you. Most dogs love performing tricks for you to pleasantly accept that you are in charge.
[4] Training should be fun and rewarding for you and your dog. It can enrich your relationship and make living together more enjoyable. A well-trained dog is more confident and can more safely be allowed a greater amount of freedom than ______
