I live in a city, and I like quiet life. I hate nosy (愛(ài)管閑事的) neighbors but it’s very unlucky that I had one for myself. They moved in a couple of months ago and although I never felt that they were a strange family, I’ve always hated the way they get “too close” to me, my house, my garden, and even my garbage cans.

One day, my neighbors were mowing their lawn (草坪). My garbage cans were near their lawn. For some strange reason, I found the wife looking through my garbage cans. I felt angry but since they were from a different culture, I thought that maybe it was “normal” from their ideas.

That afternoon, the couple knocked on my front door. When I opened, they gave me a plastic bag. Inside were my old daily bills, credit cards and bank statements, and an old birthday card that my old uncle sent. They said that they were returning them to me because these documents contained very private information that may be used by others.

I’ve heard of it before. I asked them how those documents can be used by others and they started telling me their very own experience, which forced them to leave their home and move next door to us. The wife told me that she never destroyed the bills. They also had a “nosy neighbour” who looked through their garbage cans which they actually thought was pretty strange. Little did they know that this “nosy neighbor” was collecting their personal information from their rubbish. Then all their money was taken out from the bank by their neighbor.

It was a very painful experience for all of them and they wanted to leave it all behind so they left. I was very thankful. They were not nosy neighbors. They simply didn’t want us to experience the same thing that they did.

There are plenty of things you can feel positive knowing about Garfield—the cat who loves lasagna, hates Mondays and adores a teddy bear named Pooky. But last week, without warning, there rose a strange and sudden debate around a question about the famous cat that even creator Jim Davis needed to weigh in on: Is Garfield a boy, a girl, or no gender(性別)at all?

The argument appears to have begun when writer Virgil Texas came across a 2014 Mental Floss interview with Davis where he described his tabby creation Garfield as “not really male or female or any particular race or nationality, young or old.”

In response to the quote(引用),Virgil wrote on Twitter: “FACT:Garfield has no gender. This. Is. Definite.” So sure was he of Garfield‘s true gender status that Virgil even took it upon himself to update the Garfield character Wikipedia page with the information。

But it was quickly clear that not everyone agreed with Virgil‘s edits, and thus began a war over the Wikipedia entry edits. Some mentioned that Garfield is male. Others wrote that it shouldn’t matter at all whether Garfield is male or female. Washington Post reported that the battle took place over 60 hours and eventually ended when Wikipedia shut things down by locking the page.

It was a statement that soon appeared to have been made in hurry as Jim Davis indeed soon joined the debate, shutting everything down in one line to Washington Post: “Garfield is male.” The 71-year-old cartoonist also pointed out that Garfield has a girlfriend, Arlene, and claimed that his 2014 quotes had been “taken out of context”. “I’ve always said that I wanted to work with animals because they’re not regarded as being any particular gender, race, age or ethnicity,” he said. “In that sense, the humor could be enjoyed by a broader group.”

1.What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. An argument about the gender of Garfield.

B. The interview between Jim Davis and Virgil Texas.

C. An update of Wikipedia entry edits about Garfield.

D. The popularity of the famous cartoon character Garfield.

2.What does the underlined phrase “weigh in on” probably mean?

A. Agree with. B. Join in.

C. Put forward. D. Care about.

3.The debate online upon the gender of Garfield was ended up by ______.

A. writer Virgil Texas B. Wikipedia

C. Washington Post D. creator Jim Davis

4.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A. Jim Davis’ 2014 quotes had been cut out.

B. Garfield becomes more famous than before.

C. Washington Post shut everything down in one line about Garfield.

D. The creation of Garfield is aimed at entertainment rather than anything else.

Mark felt that it was time for him to take part in his community, so he went to the neighborhood meeting after work. The area city council (委員會(huì)) woman was leading a discussion about how the quality of life was decreasing. The neighborhood faced many problems. Mark looked at the charts taped to the walls. There were charts for parking problems, crime, and for problems in vacant buildings. Mark read from the charts, “Police patrols(巡邏) cut back, illegal parking up 20%”. People were supposed to suggest solutions to the councilwoman. It was too much for Mark. "The problems are too big," he thought. As he neared the bus stop on his way home, Mark saw a woman carrying a grocery bag and a baby. As Mark got closer, her other child, a little boy, suddenly dashed into the street. The woman tried to reach for him, but as she moved, her bag shifted (滑落), and groceries started to fall out. Mark ran to take the boy's arm and led him back to his mother. Then he picked up the groceries while the woman smiled in relief. "Thanks!" she said. "You've got great timing!" "Just being neighborly," Mark said. As he rode home, he glanced at the walls of the bus. On one of them was “Small acts of kindness add up.”, Mark smiled and thought, "Maybe that's a good place to start."

Retired nurse Sue Collins was just beginning the second length of her local pool when her morning swim suddenly became anything but a pleasure.

Two months ago Sue, 69, who has never suffered from asthma or any other breathing problem in the past, suddenly found herself hard for breath.

“I felt as if my throat and oesophagus (食道) were closing up,” says Sue.

Sue is convinced the problem is related to the indoor swimming baths. “I spend half the year in Turkey and swim every day outside in a pool or the sea there and never have this problem,” she says.

She may be right, because although a trip to the pool is the perfect exercise for many, the chlorine (氯氣) used to keep the water free from germs can lead to problems.

But in most cases it’s not the chlorine that causes problems, but the by-products formed when chlorine interacts with other substances — and this is mostly due to people not showering before they enter the pool.

“This then poisons the water for them and for others,” says Dr. Hull. “The chlorine interacts with sweat and urine(尿素) on the skin and forms by-products called chloramines that float above the surface as a gaseous solution that can be inhaled in.”

Chloramines are heavier than air so hang over the water where they are easily breathed in. Some believe they may cause lung disorders. A Swedish study in 2013 examining the health of 146 workers at 46 indoor pools found that 17 per cent had airway trouble at work — but no problems at home.

As Dr. Hull says: ‘People need to remember that showering isn’t just for them. It is for the greater good.’

1.Where did Sue suddenly suffer from asthma?

A. In an outdoor swimming pool. B. In the sea.

C. In an indoor swimming pool. D. At home.

2.Why should we put chlorine into the water of the pool?

A. To keep the water warm. B. To kill the germs in the water.

C. To make the people easy to breathe. D. To stop the possibility of asthma.

3.Taking a shower before swimming in the pool is to ________.

A. stop the interaction between the chlorine and sweat and urine on the skin

B. make the swimmer feel comfortable

C. obey the rule of the pool

D. stop people from breathing in the chlorine

4.What’s the purpose of the passage?

A. To show how to avoid asthma.

B. To explain chloramines’s usage.

C. To help people cure asthma.

D. To tell people why to take a shower before swimming in a pool.
