A Cornell University sleep researcher has some advice for people who run high schools: Don’t start classes so early in the morning. It may not be that the students who nod off at their desks are lazy. And it may not be that their parents have failed to enforce(確保) bedtime. Instead, it may be that biologically these sleepyhead students aren’t used to the early hour.
“Maybe these kids are being asked to rise at the wrong time for their bodies,” says Mary Carskadon, a professor looking at problem of adolescent (青春期的)sleep at Cornell’s School of Medicine.
Carskadon is trying to understand more about the effects of early school time in adolescents. And, at a more basic level, she and her team are trying to learn more about how the biological changes of adolescence affect sleep needs and patterns(方式).
Carskadon says her work suggests that adolescents may need more sleep than they did at childhood, no less, as commonly thought.
Sleep patterns change during adolescence, as any parent of an adolescent can prove. Most adolescents prefer to stay up later at night and sleep later in the morning. But it’s not just a matter of choice—their bodies are going through a change of sleep patterns.
All of this makes the transfer(遷移)from middle school to high school—which may start one hour earlier in the morning—all the more difficult, Carskadon says. With their increased need for sleep and their biological clocks set on the “sleep late, rise late” pattern, adolescents are up against difficulties when they try to be up by 5 or 6 a.m. for a 7:30 a.m. first bell. A short sleep on a desktop may be their body’s way of saying. “I need a timeout.”
1.Carskadon suggests that high schools should not start classes so early in the morning because
______.
A. students work so late at night that they can’t get up early
B. students are so lazy that they don’t like to go to school early
C. it is biologically difficult for students to rise early
D. it is really tough for parents to enforce bedtime
2.The underlined phrase “nod off” most probably means “_______”.
A. fall asleep B. turn around
C. agree with others D. refuse to work
3.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to Mary Carskadon?
A. Adolescents are going through a change of sleep patterns.
B. Adolescents need less sleep than they used to at childhood.
C. Adolescents prefer to stay up later at night and sleep later in the morning.
D. It is difficult for adolescents to get up early for a 7:30 a.m. first bell in high school.
4.What is the test mainly about?
A. Adolescent heath care.
B. Adolescent sleep difficulties.
C. Problems in adolescent learning.

Leonardo da Vinci’s mother may have been a Chinese slave according to a new research by an Italian historian and novelist—Angelo Paratico, who has spent the last 20 years living and working in Hong Kong, researching the links between his homeland and China over the past half century.
Mr Paratico said the documents he has uncovered during two years of research form the basis of his latest book Leonardo Da Vinci, a Chinese scholar lost in Renaissance(文藝復興)Italy. The book, which is due to be published next year, uncovers evidence that there’s a link between Da Vinci and the Far East.
Speaking to the South China Morning Post, Mr Paratico said, “I am sure that Leonardo’s mother was from the East, but to make her a Chinese, we need to use a deductive method(演繹法). One wealthy client of Leonardo’s father had a slave called Caterina. After Leonardo’s date of birth, she disappeared from the documents. She was no longer working there.’’
It is believed that his mother was called Caterina, who, according to some reports, was a local peasant. But Mr Paratico’s new work claims it is most likely that Da Vinci’s mother was a slave. Supporting his theory, he said, “During the Renaissance, countries like Italy and Spain were full of slaves from the East.”
He claimed that there were certain aspects of Da Vinci’s life and works which suggest a Chinese link. For instance, he was writing with his left hand from left to right and he was also a vegetarian, which was not common. Mona Lisa is probably a portrait of his mother,as Sigmund Freud said in 1910. On the back of Mona Lisa, there is a Chinese landscape and even her face looks Chinese.
Mr Paratico said he believes the only way to solve the mystery is to dig out some of Da Vinci’s relations in Florence and extract some DNA.
1.What is Mr Paratico’s latest book based on?
A. His research findings. B. His living experience.
C. His final visit to Italy. D. His interest in Renaissance.
2.What may suggest there is a link between Da Vinci and Chinese?
A. His working habit. B. His ways of writing.
C. His birth date. D. His father’s friend.
3.What can we learn about Da Vinci’s mother?
A. She was a slave of Leonardo’s father.
B. She quit working after her marriage.
C. She was buried in Florence after death.
D. She was probably the model of Mona Lisa.

When my son was 11 years old, he got a small job helping out with a traveling carnival in our town. He didn’t come home at lunch time, phoning instead to tell me he was fine and had found a few days’ work helping out at an exhibit. He turned up for supper as usual however after he finished work.
I asked him how he had managed at lunch and he told me he had made some new friends at the carnival, some young men who were twin brothers, and their mom and dad. They had paid him a few dollars and invited him for lunch in return for helping them set up their exhibit and wanted him to return the next day to help with other chores (雜務).
I was glad he had found new friends but a little worried about the type of people who might be traveling in a carnival. "Oh, Mom, these are just normal everyday people like anyone else. They just work at a carnival instead of in a store or something". "Come down tomorrow and meet them yourself," he said.
So the next day I went to the carnival and to the exhibit he had directed me to. The twin brothers turned out to be Siamese (連體的) twins, joined at the chest. He hadn’t thought this fact was noteworthy(重要的) enough to mention. When I brought it to him, he said, "Yes, I noticed that too. Do you know that their mom has to make all their clothes because it’s so difficult to find anything to fit them? They’re also really good cooks. Today, Joe, the one on the right, made me spaghetti (意大利面條) for lunch."
What others see first in a person is not what a child considers important. Where I saw Siamese twins, he saw people having difficulty buying clothes that fit, and young men who were good cooks. It was a lesson I have thought about many times over the years.
1.From the first paragraph we know that ______.
A. The author’s son could live on his job at the exhibit
B. The author’s son was good at communicating with others
C. The author’s son disliked meeting his parents at home
D. The author’s son usually made his appearance at supper
2.In the boy’s eyes, the Siamese twins were ______.
A. people who had no suitable clothes to wear
B. good cooks with strange appearance
C. just normal people
D. more friendly and kinder than normal people
3.Which proverb may the author agree with according to the last paragraph?
A. Don’t judge a person by his looks. B. It is a matter of opinion
C. Love me, love my dog. D. It’s never too late to learn.
