How can you do? —Control!
Time is 42        . If you don't control it, it will control you. If you don't make it work for you, it will 43        you. You must become the master of time, not the servant. “Study hard and play hard” is an old saying, but it still 44       . You have plenty of time for classes, study, work, and play if you use your time 45        . It is not how much time you allocate for study that 46          but how much you learn when you do study.
Too much wasted time is 47         medicine. The more time you waste, the easier it is to continue wasting time.  Soon, doing nothing becomes a habit you can't 48        . You  will be       49       to wasting time. When this happens, you 50      your feeling of accomplishment and you fall by the wayside. A full schedule is a good schedule. Some students 51          to hear the time message. They refuse to 52        the fact that college life demands some53         of time control. There is no escape. So what's the next step? If you seriously want to get the time message, the next passage will give it to you. 54      — it will not only improve your grades but also free you to 55           college life more.

On numerous drives throughout my childhood, my mother would suddenly pull over the car to examine a flower by the side of the road or rescue a beetle (甲蟲) from certain tragedy while I, in my late teens and early twenties, sat impatiently in the car.
Though Mother’s Day follows Earth Day, for me, they have always been related. My mom has been “green” since she became concerned about the environment. Part of this habit was born of thrift (節(jié)儉). Like her mother and her grandmother before her, Mom saves glass jars, empty cheese containers and re-uses her plastic bags.
Mom creates a kind of give-and-take relationship with wildlife in her yard. She knows to pick the apples on her trees a little early to fend off the bears and that if she leaves the bird feeders out at night, it’s likely they’ll be knocked down by a family of raccoons (浣熊). Spiders that make their way into the house are captured (捕獲) in a juice glass and set loose in the garden.
I try to teach my children that looking out for the environment starts with being aware of the environment. On busy streets, we look for spent (開敗的) dandelions (蒲公英) to parachute; we say hello to neighborhood cats and pick up plastic cups and paper bags. This teaching comes easily, I realize, because I was taught so well by example. Mom didn’t need to lecture; she didn’t need to beat a drum to change the world. She simply slowed down enough to enjoy living in it and with that joy came compassion and an instinct (本能) for preservation.
I am slowing down and it isn’t because of the weight of my nearly forty years on the planet, it is out of my concern for the planet itself. I’ve begun to save glass jars and re-use packing envelopes. I pause in my daily tasks to watch the squirrels race each other through the palm (棕櫚樹) leaves above my porch (門廊).
Last summer, in the company of my son and daughter, I planted tomatoes in my yard. With the heat of August around me, I ate the first while sitting on my low wall with dirt on my hands. Warm from the sun, it burst on my tongue with a sweetness I immediately wanted to share with my mom.
小題1:Why does the author say Earth Day is connected with Mother’s Day?
A.Because Mother’s Day falls shortly after Earth Day.
B.To stress that all the older women in her family are environmentalists.
C.To stress how much her mother cares about the environment.
D.Because on Mother’s Day her mother shows her how to be friend to nature.
小題2: According to the fourth paragraph, which of the following is the author’s mother NOT likely to do?
A.When she came across a lost dog, she helped it to find its shelter.
B.In spring, she spent some time watching the plants growing in the garden.
C.She joined in the campaign to encourage the public to contribute actively towards a better environment.
D.She walked to a nearby shop which was within ten minutes’ walk rather than drove there.
小題3:What can we conclude from the article?
A.The author’s mother is very patient with her children.
B.The author’s mother knows how to live in harmony with nature.
C.The author’s mother always took care of the wildlife that came into her yard.
D.The author’s mother used to remind her to slow down to protect the environment.
小題4: We can infer from the article that ______.
A.the author thinks that too many people now label themselves environmentalists
B.the author’s mother knows how to get rid of the wildlife in her yard
C.the author believes that only by learning to slow down, can we enjoy life
D.the author realizes that she should teach her children by example as well
小題5:What is the main idea of the last three paragraphs?
A.How the author taught her children to protect the environment.
B.How the author’s mother influenced the author.
C.What inspired the author to slow down and enjoy life.
D.How the author spent her time with her children.

Winston Churchill once described Russia as “a riddle wrapped in a mystery(謎) inside a puzzle”. Observers of Russia in the 21st century could surely say the same of the country’s president, Vladimir Putin.
Born in Leningrad, six months before the death of Stalin, the young Putin experienced a poverty-stricken childhood but received a good education. He developed lifelong interests in judo and spy novels, and first applied to the KGB(蘇聯(lián)國家安全委員會) at the age of 17. When they told him to go away and come back with a degree, he completed with an efficiency(效率) that would later serve him well.
Putin used his KGB training, plus his own discipline and common sense, in a series of jobs. He became acting President on 31 December 1999, when president Boris Yeltsin resigned in a surprising move. Putin won the 2000 presidential election and in 2004 he was re-elected for a second term lasting until 7 May 2008.
Due to term limits, Putin was unable to run for a third presidential term. After the victory of  Dmitry Medvedev, in the 2008 presidential elections, he was appointed to be Russia’s Prime Minister.
Putin is regarded as one bringing political stability and re-establishing the rule of law. During his presidency, Russia’s economy(經(jīng)濟) bounced back, seeing GDP increase by 72%, poverty cut more than half, and average monthly salaries increase from $80 to $640. Analysts have described Putin's economic reforms as impressive. At the same time, his conduct in office has been questioned by political opposition at home, foreign governments, and human rights organizations for leading the Second Chechen War, and for his record on human rights and freedoms.
Whether he wants to drive Russia into a new stage, or believes in the values of its Soviet past, he is determined to put his nation back on its feet. To do this, Vladimir Putin may have to show his true colors sooner rather than later.

Four hundred years ago, an Italian scientist named Galileo Galilei became the first person to see the craters(環(huán)形山) on the moon. Galileo was one of the first people to use a telescope to study the sky. Since then, telescopes have become the most important tool used by astronomers. Scientists never stop finding new ways to make these instruments more powerful. In the next several years, two new telescopes with different purposes are to be used.
One of the telescopes, called Pan-STARRS, could save humans from dying out. Nick Kaiser, a scientist who works on the project, says the Pan-STARRS telescope has been designed to find “90 percent of all killer asteroids(小行星) near Earth”.
Pan-STARRS, like most telescopes, uses mirrors and lenses(透鏡) to provide pictures of outer space. Giant mirrors are used to “gather” light. They reflect the light onto the lens of a camera, which can then record the image.
When completed, Pan-STARRS will include four telescopes which will be put on top of a mountain on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Only one telescope is in place and working now. Each telescope will take pictures of one patch of sky for about 30 seconds, and then move on to another patch. Every night, each telescope will take pictures of about 1,000 patches. Every week, each telescope will have photographed the whole sky.
Each of the four telescopes will take pictures of the same patches of sky. One telescope, working alone, may sometimes incorrectly show an asteroid. If there are three other telescopes working, astronomers can use them to see if there really is an asteroid coming our way. By using four telescopes instead of one, scientists hope to get a better picture of space. If a giant asteroid was identified, astronomers would try to break it up long before it reached Earth.
