High school dropouts(輟學(xué)者)earn an average of $ 9 ,000 less per year than graduates. Now a
new study dispels a common belief why they quit. It’s much more basic than flunking out(不及格).
Society tends to think of high school dropouts as kids who just can’t cut it. They are lazy  ,and
perhaps not two bright. So researchers were surprised when they asked more than 450 kids who
quit school about why they left.
''The vast majority actually had passing grades and they were confident that they could have
graduated from high school. “ John Bridgeland , the executive researcher said. About 1 million teens
leave school each year. Only about half of African-American and Hispanic(美籍西班牙的)
students will receive a diploma(證書)  ,and actually all dropouts come to regret their decision.
So , if failing grades don’t explain why these kids quit , what does? Again  ,John Bridgeland : “The
most dependable finding was that they were bored. “ They found classes uninteresting; they weren’t
inspired or motivated. They didn’t see any direct connection between what they were learning in the
classroom to their own lives , or to their career aspirations. "
The study found that most teens who do drop out wait until they turn sixteen , which happens to be
the age at which most states allow students to quit. In the US  ,only one state  ,New Mexico  ,has a
law requiring teenagers to stay in high school until they graduate. Only four states: California ,
Tennessee , Texas and Utah , plus the District of Columbia , require school attendance until age 18 ,
no exceptions , another researcher  ,says raising the compulsory attendance age may be one way to
keep more kids in school.
''As these dropouts look back  ,they realize they’ve made a mistake. And anything that sort of
gives these people an extra push to stick it out and it through to the end , is probably helpful measure. ''
New Hampshire may be the next state to raise its school attendance age to 18. But critics say that
forcing the students unwilling to continue their studies to stay in school misses the point-the need for
reform. It's been called for to reinvent high school education to make it more challenging and relevant ,
and to ensure that kids who do stick it out receive a diploma that actually means something.

By analyzing academic data from 10 states, representing the testing of more than 7.2 millions of youths, U.S. researchers found that gender differences in math scores were extremely small among all ethnic groups in grades 2-11.
These findings are in contrast to earlier results from 1990 that indicate measurable differences favoring males in complex problem-solving, beginning in the high school years.
Janet Hyde from University of Wisconsin and colleagues reported their study results in the journal Science on Friday.
Currently, women are largely absent from the highest levels of careers in mathematics, the physical sciences, and engineering. In the United States, Ph.D. programs in engineering currently average only about 15 percent women, and similar statistics have led to stereotypes (成見)about girls and women lacking in mathematical ability.
Now, it is clear that the general population no longer shows a gender difference in mathematical skills, according to this latest report.
And this new data on academic performance in the United States shows that students are tested frequently on "recall" and "skill/concept" items, but rarely on "strategic thinking"(戰(zhàn)略思維) or "extended thinking" concepts.
If standardized tests do not assess (評(píng)估)the sorts of reasoning that are crucial to careers in science and math, then the skills may not be taught, putting American students at a disadvantage to students in other countries where testing and instruction focuses on more challenging content. "This is a gap that should be fixed," Hyde said.
    56. What is the best title of the passage?
    A. A new study result about math.                   B. No gender differences in math.
    C. Girls are not good at math.                       D. Girls do better in math than boys.
    57. The underlined word “crucial” in the last paragraph most probably means______.
    A. necessary      B. unimportant         C. important    D . cruel
    58. What Hyde said in the last paragraph means that ________.
    A. standardized tests should assess the sorts of reasoning so that the skills may be taught
    B. testing and instruction focuses on more challenging content in the USA
    C. students in other countries are cleverer than American students
    D. students should be tested frequently on "recall" and "skill/concept" items
    59. The passage is most probably taken from _______.
    A. a science magazine B. a research paper        C. a personal diary D. a newspaper

High school is tough. And if you were to ask Pink her opinion on the subject she'd tell you the same.
Before she became famous, and when she was still called Alicia Moore, the young superstar faced more
than her fair share of high school drama.
In her interview with Faze, Pink admits she was sorted as a troublemaker at school, "The problem
was, I was labelled as trouble-so I was like 'trouble'. I'll show you trouble. You want trouble, well here
    it is!"
Unfortunately, Pink began to deliver what the teachers expected and the vicious cycle began. "It's
like the label they give you, you grow into it anyway. They treat you bad, so you act bad," Pink says
and continues. "Did I deserve it?-in the end yes, but I feel I just conformed to the label they gave me.
I think a lot of kids just get frustrated and act the way the teachers expect them to."
It's no surprise that eventually Pink developed a problem with authority, "When they would say it
had to be a certain way I would ask, 'why?' They'd say, 'Because it always has,' so I'd try to prove
    them wrong."
Predictably, Pink dropped out of school and soon after began to sing in nightclubs. She sang any
chance she could get and was eventually discovered by a talent scout (星探) while singing in a club in
Philadelphia. She does not regret anything she has done and would not change her past if she could.
"To change that would change who I am," she said in her Faze interview. She believes having faced so
many difficulties at a young age is a good thing. "To experience the good you have to have seen the bad.
Plus it makes you appreciate blessings more," she says.
Pink encourages us to be ourselves and not to worry about being labelled. "Just wait," she says.
"Give it a couple of years then it won't matter. Because no matter what label they give you, the best
thing you can do is prove them wrong."
    1.  According to the passage, what is Pink's suggestion?
    A. Do it your way.
    B. To be confident.
    C. Don't make trouble.
    D. To be happy.
     2. What does the underlined word "labelled" in the second paragraph mean?
    A. Known.
    B. Realized.
    C. Classified.
    D. Discovered.
    3. The passage implies that students ________.
    A. will usually follow their teachers' advice
    B. will act the way their parents expect them to
    C. are likely to behave in a bad way as others expect
    D. are willing to meet with many difficulties
    4. Pink felt that high school was hard because ________.
    A. she fell behind others
    B. she was misunderstood
    C. she was unsuccessful
    D. she felt lonely

                                                  High Speed Book Scanner
Simply turning pages of a book quickly may not seem like the best way to scan it. A Japanese
research group at Tokyo University has created new software that allows hundreds of pages to be
scanned within minutes. Scanning text is normally a boring process with each page having to be inserted
into a scanner, but the team led by Professor Masatoshi Ishikawa uses a high speed camera that takes
500 pictures a second to scan pages as they are turned by workers.
Normal scanners can only scan the information that is actually before them on the page. This high
speed book scanner uses a camera that captures pages at 1000fps as they are turned. A system built in
allows it to automatically correct any changes to the text due to the page bending as well as light differences due to shadows. "It takes a shot of the shape, then it calculates the shape and uses those calculations to
film the scanning," Ishikawa said, explaining the system used to reconstruct the original page.
The current system is able to scan an average 250-page book in a little over 60 seconds using basic
computer hardware. While it now requires extra time to process the scanned images (影像), the
researchers hope to eventually make the technology both faster and much smaller. "In the more distant
future, once it becomes possible to put all of this processing on one chip (芯片) and then put that in an
iPad or iPod, one could scan just using that chip. At that point, it becomes possible to scan something
quickly to save for later reading," Ishikawa said.
Being able to scan books with an iPhone may be further off, but Ishikawa says that a commercial
version of the large-scale computer based scanning system could be available in two or three years.
While the technology has the potential to take paper books into the digital age, it remains to be how
publishers will react to people scanning their books while just turning pages quickly
    .

    1. According to the passage, the advantage of the new scanning software is that ______.

    A. there is no need to scan every page
    B. it can work much more effectively
    C. no manpower is needed in operating the scanner
    D. it can make the scanning process more interesting

    2. According to Ishikawa, the scanner works by_____.

    A. changing the shape of the images
    B. reducing the size of the images
    C. reconstructing the original page
    D. scanning several pages at the same time

    3. What is Ishikawa's attitude towards the development of the scanning system?

    A. Optimistic.
    B. Uncertain.
    C. Disapproving.
    D. Cautious.

    4. What does the underlined sentence mean?

    A. People will get any book they like more easily.
    B. Publishers will refuse to comment on the new software.
    C. Publishers will probably not welcome the new software.
    D. People won't need to buy books any more with an iPhone.

High school students are some of the busiest people in the world. To get the most from all
you do, you must be in control of your time. Your success in high school depends on your use
of time. Here are some important things to remember.
         * Begin each term by filling in a master plan. First fill in things you must do (classes, work,
practice, etc. That you can't change). Then find the most effective use for these times.
         * Set a regular time and place for study. This will save you time in the long run. If you have
a study hall in your school, use it!
         * Use daylight hours to study whenever possible. For most people for every hour of study
done in daylight hours, it will take them one and a half hours to do the same task at night.
*Take breaks. Don't plan marathon study time. Have a short rest before you study again.
*By using flash cards or summary sheets, you can use odd times to study-----while you're
waiting for class to start or for a friend to pick you up.
         * If possible, plan study time with a partner. Choose your partner wisely however. Make
sure you study, not socialize yourself.
         * Do the most difficult tasks when you are active. (Take math for example: when you're
energetic, it will become easier to solve; when you're tired, it will be impossible ! )
*Make a daily checklist. Do the most important tasks first.
    1. According to the passage, your success in high school mainly lies in__________.
    A. making full use of your time
    B. your hard work
    C. your brain power
    D. how well you play the game
    2. We should use daylight hours to study whenever possible because ____________.
    A. school study halls are open to students only in the daytime
    B. most people can spare more time to study in the daytime
    C. it's more difficult to study effectively at night
    D. we have more important things to do than study at night
    3. On how to use our time, we should follow the following suggestions EXCEPT _______ .
    A. working out a complete plan for the whole term
    B. keeping a good balance between study and rest
    C. putting the most important tasks first
    D. trying to study alone instead of working with others
    4. The underlined word "odd" in Paragraph 6 probably means "__________".
    A. strange
    B. irregular
    C. busy
    D. divided
    5. The passage is probably written for ________.
    A. parents
    B. college students
    C. teachers
    D. high school students
