The CNN.com story quoted Baluchi saying he'd run across the United States twice and around its border once.He said he fled Iran to escape persecution (迫害).Now he is an American citizen.

解答 21-23 ADB
21.A  細(xì)節(jié)理解題.根據(jù)第三段"disoriented and asking for directions to Bermuda"可知,Baluchi迷路了,故選A.
22.D  推理判斷題.根據(jù)第五段"asked Baluchi to quit his journey because he didn't have enough supplies"可排除A;根據(jù)第五段"because he didn't have enough supplies. But he wouldn't leave his bubble"可知,Baluchi并沒有因為食物補給不足而停止旅行,排除B;根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段"Baluchi's Facebook page described his plans to travel in the bubble across the Caribbean"可知,Baluchi在Facebook上介紹了他的穿越加勒比海的計劃,排除C;根據(jù)倒數(shù)第四段"There were no reported injuries"可知,Baluchi得救了,而且沒有受傷,故選D.
23.B  觀點態(tài)度題.根據(jù)第三段"It was not clear when he started his adventure."的"adventure"和第五段"he didn't have enough supplies. But he wouldn't leave his bubble"可知,Baluchi具有冒險精神,故選B.

13."If we can set it up so you can't unlock your phone unless you've got the right fingerprint(指紋),"Barack Obama asked last Tuesday,"why can't we do the same thing for our guns?"For this reasonable-sounding question, the president was praised throughout the media.
As it happens, though, there is a good answer to this question:there is no market for guns that work just some of the time.Guns are simple things designed to operate as easily and reliably as possible. The introduction of electronics eats away this simplicity, and to a degree that is absolutely unacceptable to the consumer. As President Obama well knows, the fingerprint software on his phone works rather erratically:Often it takes a user two or three tries to log in; occasionally,it falls asleep deeply and obeys the password. When this happens on an phone, the user is mildly inconvenienced. If this were to happen on a gun,the user would be dead. There is a reason that modern smartphones put the camera function outside of the authentication(認(rèn)證) process.
How could we possibly think that guns are the same as other commercial products? It is true that, say, cars have become considerably safer over the last few decades; true, too, that"research"has contributed to this improvement. But it matters enormously that a car is not intended to hurt people, and that in a perfect world nobody would ever be injured by one.Can we say the same of guns?Of course not.Guns are killing machines, designed to do damage to living things. In fact, they have no other purpose. As such, the salient(突出的) question before any free people is not"are guns dangerous?"they are, but"who gets them, and why?"
This is not to say that nothing at all can be done to improve public safety. On an individual level, gun owners should do everything to ensure that their guns are kept away from children, and, where possible, they should train themselves in case they are ever called upon to shoot in anger. At the national level, the combination of better policing and economic growth can help to reduce crime-and,indeed,it has.In 1993,gun crime was more than twice as common as it is now,and there were fewer guns in circulation.Unpleasant as it is in its own right, that we have reached the point at which two-thirds of all guns-related deaths are deliberately self-inflicted (自虐) is a small victory.
How to deal with those deaths that remain? That is a tricky one.I do not know the answer, and nor, frankly, does anybody else. But selling fantasies to the ignorant is not going to cut it.
29.What does the writer mainly argue in this passage?B
A.Gun crime has been greatly reduced.

B.presenting problems and solutions
C.quoting the authorities(引用權(quán)威)
D.making comparisons and contrasts

A.Few know how to deal with guns-related deaths.
B.Efforts to improve public safety have partly paid off.
C.The nature of guns makes them different from other products.

14.If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong.Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power.Researchers found that learning other lan guages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language.A team led by Dr.Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of"early bilinguals"who had learnt a second language before the age of five,as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.
"Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,"said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills."Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (靈活的),"he said."You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas."
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four.Reading,writing,and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better."Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,"explained the scientists.

8.Most people,when they travel to space,would like to stay in orbit for a few days or more.And this stands to reason,if you're paying﹩20,000for your trip to orbit(軌道)!So in order for tourism to reach its full potential there's going to be a need for orbital accommodation---or space hotels.What would a space hotel actually be like to visit?Hotels in orbit will offer the services you expect from a hotel---private rooms,meals,bars.But they'll also offer two unique experiences:impressive views---of Earth and space---and the endless entertainment of living in zero gravity---including sports and other activities that make use of this.
The hotels themselves will vary greatly---from being quite simple in the early days to huge luxury structure at a later date.It's actually surprising that as later as 1997,very few designs for space hotels were published.This is mainly because those who might be expected to design them haven't expected launch(發(fā)射) costs to come down far enough to make them possible.
Lots of people who've been to space have described vividly what it's like to live in zero gravity.There are obviously all sorts of possibilities for dancing,gymnastics,and zero-G sports.Luckily,you don't need to sleep much living in zero gravity,so you'll have plenty of time for relaxing by hanging out in a bar with a window looking down at the turning Earth below.
Of course all good things have come to an end,unfortunately.And so after a few days you'll find yourself heading back though you'll be much more expert at exercising in zero gravity than you were when you arrive.You'll be thinking how soon you can save up enough to get back up again---or maybe you should change jobs to get to work in an orbiting hotel.

24.When traveling in space,most people would like to stay in orbit for a few days becauseA.
A.It is expensive to travel in space
B.they would find the possible life in other star systems
C.they could enjoy the luxury of space hotels
D.they want to realize the full potential of tourism
25.Which of the following is a unique experience that space hotels will offer?B
A.The gravitational pull   B.The special views.
C.The relaxation in a bar.D.The space walk.
26.This passage is mainly aboutD.
A.traveling in space
B.the ways of living in space hotels
C.zero gravity and space hotels
D.the description of space hotels.
