One period of our lives when better results are demanded of us is, strangely enough, childhood. Despite being young we are expected to achieve good grades, stay out of trouble, make friends at school, do well on tests, perform chores (雜務(wù))at home and so on. It’s not easy.

Likeable children enjoy many advantages, including the ability to deal more easily with stresses of growing up.In her book Understanding Child Stress, Dr. Carolyn Leonard states that children who are likeable and optimistic are able to gain support from others. This leads to focus and resilience(適應(yīng)力), the ability to recover from or adjust early to life stress. Much research shows that resilience has enabled children to succeed in school, avoid drug abuse, and develop a healthy self-awareness(自我意識).

Why does a likeable child more easily handle stress and do better in his or her life? Because likeability helps create what’s known as a positive feedback loop(回饋圈). The positive feelings you want to see in other people are returned to you, creating constant encouragement and motivation to deal with the daily stress of life.

This feedback loop continues into adulthood. To return once again to the example of teaching, learning becomes easier with a likeable personality. Michael Delucchi of the University of Hawaii reviewed dozens of studies to determine if likeable teachers received good ratings because of their likeability or because they in fact taught well. Delucchi found that “Students who perceive(察覺) a teacher as likeable, in contrast to(比照) those who do not, may be more attentive to the information that the teacher delivers and they’ll work harder on assignments, and they will learn more.”

You may have noticed this pattern in your own life when you try to give some advice. The more positive your relationship with that person, the more he or she seems to listen, and the more you feel certain that that person has heard you and intends to act on your words.

A.will work harder on assignments and learn more

B.can deal more easily with stress independently

C.can achieve more and understand themselves better

D.a(chǎn)re always optimistic and ready to help those in need

3.The main purpose of the studies done by Michael Delucchi is to find __________.

A.how a likeable teacher’s teaching style is formed

B.how a teacher’s likeability gains popularity

C.if a likeable teacher draws more attention

D.if a likeable teacher has a positive personality

4.The passage aims at proving that __________.

A.likeable people give better advice

B.likeable people do better in their childhood

One would have to be a fool to overlook (忽視)the importance of using positive(積極的) thinking for you rather than allowing negative thinking to work against you. In recent years, research in psychopharmacology (精神藥理學(xué)) has proved what many people have known over the centuries: a positive attitude is good for you, good for your health, good for your wealth, good for everything. Researchers found that a positive attitude produces a specific chemical reaction which makes people feel better, while negative thinking results in a decline of hormone (荷爾蒙) and shuts down the immune (免疫的) system. This leads to illness and depression. Positive thoughts will make you feel better. Even if you must begin by literally forcing yourself to be positive (faking it, so to speak), it will become contagious (會傳播的) and the positive thoughts will generate nice little chemicals and good feelings which will reinforce the positive thoughts.

For example, if you force yourself to smile or laugh, even when you don't feel like smiling or laughing, if you keep at it for a few minutes, you will soon feel like it. Feelings can generate (導(dǎo)致)thoughts, but thoughts can also generate feelings. Control your thoughts and you can control your feelings. Positive thinking is important in all aspects of our lives. There is probably no single factor more important in determining your success in achieving your career objectives than your own attitude.

It's often been said that in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. And in the office of militant (好戰(zhàn)) negativism, the positive workers shine like gold. You cannot control external events, but you can learn to control your reaction to those events and thereby have a positive attitude and be happy. This vital key to success is totally within your control. Use it.

1.We can infer from the passage that         .

A.positive thinking can cure you of your diseases

B.positive thinking can easily be generated by anyone

C.a(chǎn) decline of hormone may cause you to be depressed

D.a(chǎn) specific chemical reaction is the cause of negative thinking

2.According to the passage, which of the following is true?

A.Feeling and thoughts can generate each other.

B.It's easier to control thoughts than to control feelings.

C.Your success depends wholly on your attitude.

D.Keeping smiling will surely make you successful.

3.Just like a one-eyed man in the land of the blind, you should             .

A.control your feeling to what is happening to you

B.be king in your office

C.pay no attention to what is going on around you

D.take positive attitude in the office of militant negativism

4.The best title to the passage is             .

A.The Bad Effect of Negative Thinking          B.Why Should People Think

C.Thinking: The Vital Way                   D.Positive Thinking Benefits People

A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves— the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.

We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.

This “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”

Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. Or harsh (刻薄的) and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.

Words possess power because of their lasting effects. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.

Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem (自尊) and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.

1.The main idea of the first paragraph is that _________.

A.words have a lasting effect on us

B.inspiring words give us confidence

C.negative words may let us down

D.not sticks and stones but words will hurt us

2.There is no need for us to feel embarrassed when we talk to ourselves because _________.

A.a(chǎn)lmost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves

B.talking to ourselves always gives us courage

C.we can benefit from talking to ourselves

D.it does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone

3.The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely ________.

A.remind ourselves

B.praise ourselves

C.make ourselves relaxed

D.give ourselves amusement

4.The author would probably hold the view that _________.

A.encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers

B.negative words may motivate us to make more progress

C.people tend to remember friendly words

D.it is better to think twice before talking to others

5.In which column of the newspaper can you most likely read this passage?

A.News.

B.Advice column.

C.Health.

D.Language.
