【題目】Are you carrying too much on your back at school? I’m sure lots of children of your age will say “Yes”. Not only do the students in China have this problem, but children in the United States also have heavy school bags.

Doctors are starting to worry that younger and younger students are having back and neck problems as a result of school bags being too heavy for them.

“It’s hard for me to go upstairs with my bag because it’s so heavy,” said Rick Hammond, an 11-year-old student in the US.

Rick is among students who have common school bags with two straps (帶子) to carry them, but many other students choose rolling bags(拉桿包).

But even with rolling bags, getting upstairs and buses is still a problem for children. Many of them have hurt their backs or necks because of the heavy school bags.

But how much is too much? Doctors say students should carry no more than 10% to 15% of their own body weight.

Scott Bautch, a doctor, said children under Grade 4 should stay with 10%. But it is also important that older children don’t stay with over 15%, because their bodies are still growing. “Children are losing their balance and falling down with their school bags,” he said.

Parents and teachers are starting to tell children to only take home library books they will be reading that night. Some teachers are using pieces of paper or thin workbooks for students to take home.

One of the best answers is, as some children said, to have no homework at all!

1From the passage we can know that .

A. only children in China carry too heavy school bags

B. both children in China and the US carry too heavy school bags

C. children in other countries don’t carry too heavy bags

D. only children in the US carry too heavy school bags

2If a child carries a heavy school bag, .

A. his back or neck will be hurt B. his head and arms will be hurt

C. his hands will be hurt D. his feet will be hurt

3According to Scott Bautch, if a child in Grade 5 weighs about 30 kilos, the school bag he carries should not be over ________.

A. 5 kilos B. 3 kilos

C. 5.5 kilos D. 4.5 kilos

4Some students think the best answer to this problem is that .

A. they should have a little homework to do after they get home

B. their teachers had better not ask them to do any homework

C. they should only take home library books they will read that night

D. they should use thin workbooks instead of thick ones

【題目】七選五

【1】 When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure beats dance into view. The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. 【2】 .

The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. 【3】 It included such items as automobiles and new houses.

By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “l(fā)ife-enriching” level. While the other levels involve physical satisfactionthe feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human bodythis level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “l(fā)uxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment. 【4】

On this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?

A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice. 【5】 In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.

A. Then a third level appeared.

B. Different people have different wants on each level.

【題目】A Canine Reading Buddy

Dogs and people have developed a special bond over time. Recently, however, some dogs have taken a different role in people’s lives—therapy dogs.

1 Some therapy dogs visit patients in hospitals or nursing homes, while others visit children in schools and libraries. They are there to help children become better readers.

Reading programs that use therapy dogs have been in existence for more than ten years. All therapy dogs of this program are registered with an organization that tests the dogs to make sure they have the right personality for the job.

2 Both the dogs and the handlers are volunteers with the reading program.

At the start of a reading therapy session, a child and a dog are introduced. The pair is allowed to settle down in a quiet corner together. 3 An adult handler stays nearby but generally lets the dog perform its job without interfering(干涉). Sometimes, a handler may ask a question that encourages the child to work with the dog to help the child feel more comfortable.

Not every child will be able to be part of a reading therapy program that uses dogs. A few children might be allergic to dogs or afraid of them; some children might have cultural traditions that prevent them from touching a dog. 4

Reading therapy programs inspire learning and change. 5 They spend time with human friends.
