The UN weather agency warned on Tuesday there was a good chance of an "El Nino" climate phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean this year, bringing droughts(干旱) and heavy rainfall to the rest of the world.

The World Meteorological (氣象的) Organization (WMO) said its modeling suggested a "fairly large potential for an El Nino, most likely by the end of the second quarter of 2016".

The El Nino phenomenon occurs every two to seven years, when the trade winds that circulate surface water in the tropical (熟帶的) Pacific start to weaken.

WMO pointed out Tuesday that since last December, trade winds had weakened and there had been a significant warming of the waters below the surface in the central Pacific.

“While there is no guarantee this situation will lead to an El Nino event, the longer the trade winds remain weakened, and subsurface temperatures stay significantly warmer than average, the higher chances are," it said.

Two thirds of climate models predicted that the phenomenon would begin sometime between June and August, with one-fifth suggesting it could start as early as May, and the remaining predicting no El Nino this year, it said.

It is often followed by a return swing of La Nina, which is characterized by unusually cool ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific.

"El Nino has an important warming effect on global average temperatures," Jarraud cautioned, stressing that combined with warming from greenhouse gases such events had "the potential to cause a sharp rise in global average temperature".

D. Heavy rainfall in different areas all over the world.

3.According to the text, what might be the percentage of no "El Nino" this year?

A.13%. B.20%. C.67%. D.87%.

Once when I was facing a decision that involved high risk, I went to a friend. He looked at me for a moment, and then wrote a sentence containing the best advice I have ever had: Be bold and brave — and mighty (強(qiáng)大的) forces will come to your aid.

Those words made me see clearly that when I had fallen short in the past, it was seldom because I had tried and failed. It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, whenever I had plunged into deep water, forced by courage or circumstance, I had always been able to swim until I got my feet on the ground again.

Boldness means a decision to bite off more than you can eat. And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potential powers we possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas — even physical strength greater than most of us realize.

Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones. A college classmate of mine, Tim, was an excellent football player, even though he weighed much less than the average player. “In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, who had nothing but me between him and our goal line,” said Tim. “I was so frightened that I closed my eyes and desperately

threw myself at that guy like a bullet(子彈) — and stopped him cold.”

Boldness — a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme—is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults. Confidence builds up. Surely, there will be setbacks (挫折) and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds.

So, always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities and you’ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed.

1.What is the implied meaning of the underlined part?

A. Swallow more than you can digest.

B. Act slightly above your abilities.

C. Develop more mysterious powers.

D. Learn to make creative decisions.

2.What was especially important for Tim‘s successful defense in the football game?

A. His physical strength. B. His basic skill.

C. His real fear. D. His spiritual force.

3.What can be learned from Paragraph 5?

A. Confidence grows more rapidly in adults.

B. Trying without success is meaningless.

C. Repeated failure creates a better life.

D. Boldness can be gained little by little.

4.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?

A. To encourage people to be courageous.

B. To advise people to build up physical power.

C. To tell people the ways to guarantee success.

D. To recommend people to develop more abilities.

What do Tom Sawyer and Jumping Frogs have in common? Stories about both of them were created by one man: Mark Twain. Twain was four years old when his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, located on the west bank of the Mississippi. Twain grew up there and was fascinated with (使……入迷) life along the river——the steamboats, the giant lumber(木頭)rafts, and the people who worked on them.

The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County is one of Twain’s best loved short stories, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of his most famous novels. Both these works are celebrated by events held during National Tom Sawyer Days, which originated in the late 1950s and became national in the 1960s. Children enter their frogs in the jumping contest during National Tom Sawyer Days. There’s also a fence painting contest to see who can paint the fastest. The idea for this contest comes from a scene in Tom Sawyer, in which Tom has been told to paint the fence in front of the house he lives in. It’s a beautiful day, and he would rather be doing anything else. As his friends walk by, he makes them believe that it’s fun to paint, and they join in the “fun”. By the end of the day, the fence has three coats of paint!

Although the story of Tom Sawyer is a fiction, it’s based on facts. If you go to Hannibal, you’ll see the white fence, which still stands at Twain’s boyhood home.

1.Which of the following statements about Mark Twain is TRUE?

A. He was born in Hannibal.

B. He enjoyed his life in Hannibal.

C. He spent most of his childhood on the Mississippi.

D. He often went rafting on the Mississippi with his parents.

2. Tom Sawyer Days were created ______________.

A. about forty years ago

B. in memory of a great writer

C. shortly after Twain’s death

D. to improve kids’ interest in reading

3.Who will win the fence painting contest?

A. Bob, painting the longest.

B. Julia, painting most carefully.

C. Jim, painting in the newest way.

D. John, painting in the shortest time.

4.From the white fence at Twain’s boyhood home, we know that ________.

A. the story of Tom Sawyer is based partly on Twain’s experiences.

B. the story of Tom Sawyer is based totally on Twain’s imagination.

C. Twain’s old house is painted by the fence painting competitors.

D. Twain’s old house is visited by people from all over the country.

Many kids don't drink enough water daily, according to a new study. The study's lead author, Erica Kenney, at first planned to look into the amount of sugary drinks kids were drinking in schools. However, during her research she found that many kids were simply not drinking enough water.

Kenney and her team examined data from a group of 4,000 children, aged 6 to19, between the years of 2009 and 2012. The data was taken from the National Health and Nutrition Survey, a study on the health of children in the United States conducted each year by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention..

While looking through the survey results, she noticed that more than half of the kids who took part in the study were dehydrated (脫水的). Of' that group, boys were 76% more likely than girls not to have enough water in their system. Nearly one quarter of the kids in the survey reported drinking no plain water at all.

“These findings highlight(突出) a possible health issue that wasn't given a lot of attention in the past," Kenney said in a statement. “Even though for most of these kids this is not an immediate and great health threat, this is an issue that could really be reducing quality of life and well-being for many children and youth."

The United States-National Agriculture Library says average kids need between 10 to 14 cups of water every day. This water can come from a mix of drinks and foods that contain high amounts of water, such as celery, melons or tomatoes. It is also recommended that fluids(液體)come from water instead of sugary drinks that are high in calories and can lead to weight problems.

2.According to the findings of Erica Kenney's study, we know that ________.

A. school kids cannot find drinkable water easily

B. boys are more likely to get dehydrated than girls

C. sugary drinks are very popular with school kids

Forty years ago, Finland was a small country with mediocre(普通)public schools. Today, Finland is still small but no one calls Finland’s public schools mediocre any more.

In 2000, the Finns surprised the world when their 15-year-olds scored at the top of a closely watched international exam called the PISA. Finland has stayed near the top ever since, while the U.S. scores around the middle.

Pasi Sahlberg, an official with Finland’s Ministry of Education and Culture, is in Seattle this week to share the story of Finland’s success, and what states like Washington can learn from it.

Sahlberg’s message, although he is too polite to put it so bluntly(坦率): Stop testing so much, trust teachers more; give less homework; shorten the school day.

On Tuesday, in a room filled with teachers, principals, professors, school-board members and policy makers, Sahlberg joked about the Finns’ reputation(名聲) for being a quiet, humble people. “When Finland hit the top of the PISA,” he said, “the biggest disbelievers were Finns.”

More seriously, Finland never set out to create the world’s top school system. Instead, he said, the country decided in the 1970s that it wanted to ensure that a student’s success didn’t depend on family background.

“Finland relied on cooperation among teachers and schools, rather than on competition. Rather than judging teachers and schools based on test scores,” he said, “Finland puts trust in its teachers and principals. Teachers develop the curriculum in Finland, and design their own tests. There are no national tests, except one at the end of high school.”

That’s just the start. Along with a shorter school day, Finnish students don’t even start school until they are 7 years old. Many primary schools have a policy against giving homework.

“But Finland,”he said,“succeeded in part by adopting ideas from the U.S. and other countries. And those countries, ”he said, “can learn from Finland, too.”

1.What might be the author’s purpose of writing the passage?

A. To introduce a Finnish official.

B. To compare the education systems of Finland and the US.

C. To share the story of Finland’s success in education.

D. To ask the US to improve its education.

2.People first learned Finland’s success in education from_____.

A. its students’ performance in an international exam.

B. its international exchange programs.

C. lectures given by Pasi Sahlberg.

D. its small-sized public schools.

3.Which of the following can contribute to Finland’s success in education?

a. Giving students fewer tests.

b. Giving teachers more trust.

c. Evaluating students’ family backgrounds.

d. Creating the world’s top school system.

e. Starting school late.

A. a,b,c B. c,d,e C. a,b,e D. b,c,d

4.What Pasi Sahlerg said in Paragraph 7 suggested that ______.

A. children should start school as early as possible.

B. competition among teachers might be harmful to education.

C. the US education system is still the most advanced.

D. it’s necessary to set up a national curriculum.
