Clone Technology like Driving Cars

The recent death of the world's most famous sheep-Dolly the clone-h(huán)as not dampened(使沮喪)the enthusiasm(熱情)of Chinese scientists, who are working hard to make more breakthroughs(突破)in clone technology.

“It is hard to say whether Dolly died at a relatively young age or died from defects(缺陷)in reproduction.”Du Miao, a researcher with the Biology and Growth Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told China Daily in Beijing yesterday.“But Dolly's case reminds us that both Chinese and foreign scientists should put more efforts into improving clone technology as well as disease treatment techniques in the field of cloning animals.”He said his institute, in co operation(合作)with Yangzhou University in Eastern China's Jiangsu Province, had cloned more than 10 sheep since 1999 and the oldest is nearly five. They are all still alive.

Li Ning, deputy(代表)director of the National Key Laboratory of Agricultural and Biological Technology, who is also a professor with the Beijing Based China Agriculture University, said,“Clone technology is actually progressing well.Dolly is the first cloned sheep after all.Like driving cars, new drivers meet with accidents more easily, but the more you drive, the easier and safer you feel.In the future, the death rate of cloned animals will be reduced with technological developments.”

“Official reports show seven locally cloned sheep are still alive.Clone technology in China is gradually approaching(接近)a level of commercialization(商業(yè)化),”Li added. But Wang Yu, deputy(代表)director of the Biological Technology Centre under the Ministry of Science and Technology, said the commercialization of clone technology depends on market demand.

Recently there was a major discovery in the scientific research — the mapping of all DNA in a human gene(基因) is complete. Couple of years ago, this seems an impossible task for scientist to accomplish. All this progress in science leads us to believe that the day, when the human being will be cloned, is not far away. Human cloning has always been a topic of argument, in terms of morality(道德) or religion.

Taking a look at why cloning might be beneficial, among many cases, it is arguable that parents who are known to be at risk of passing a genetic limitation to a child could make use of cloning. If the clone was free of genetic limitations, then the other clone would be as well. The latter could be inserted in the woman and allowed to ripen to term. Moreover, cloning would enable women, who can’t get pregnant, to have children of their own.

Cloning humans would also mean that organs could be cloned, so it would be a source of perfect transfer organs. This surely would be greatly beneficial to millions of unfortunate people around the world that are expected to lose their lives due to failure of single (or more) organ(s). It is also arguable that a ban on cloning may be unlawful and would rob people of the right to reproduce and limit the freedom of scientists.

Arguments against cloning are also on a perfectly practical side. Primarily, I believe that cloning would step in the normal “cycle” of life. There would be a large number of same genes, which reduce the chances of improvement, and, in turn, development — the fundamental reason how living things naturally adapt to the ever-changing environment. Life processes failing to do so might result in untimely disappearance. Furthermore, cloning would make the uniqueness that each one of us possesses disappear, thus leading to creation of genetically engineered groups of people for specific purposes, and chances are that those individuals would be regarded as “objects” rather than people in the society.

Scientists haven’t 100% guaranteed that the first cloned humans will be normal. Thus, this could result in introduction of additional limitations in the human “gene-pool”.

Regarding such arguable topics in “black or white” approach seems very innocent to me personally. We should rather try to look at all “shades” of it. I believe that cloning is only legal if its purpose is for cloning organs; not humans. Then we could regard this as for “saving life” instead of “creating life”. I believe cloning humans is morally and socially unacceptable.

Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Genetic limitations will be beneficial for some women.

B. A large number of genes will prevent us from developing.

C. First cloned humans might be normal according to scientists.

D. Forbidding cloning might limit the freedom of scientists.

What’s the author’s opinion on cloning?

A. It should be entirely banned.    B. It is acceptable if it is used for cloning organs.

C. It will take away the right to reproduce.  D. It should be used in creating life.

Where can you read this article?

Gene technology to benefit people
Among all the fast growing science and technology, the research of human genes, or biological engineering as people call it, is drawing more and more attention now. Sometimes it is a hot topic discussed by people.
The greatest thing that gene technology can do is to cure serious diseases that doctors at present can almost do nothing with, such as cancer and heart disease. Every year, millions of people are murdered by these two killers. And to date, doctors have not found an effective way to cure them. But if the gene technology is applied, not only these two diseases can be cured completely, bringing happiness and more living days to the patients, but also the great amount of money people spend on curing their diseases can be saved, therefore it benefits the economy as well. In addition, human life span(壽命) can be prolonged.
Gene technology can help people to give birth to more healthy and clever children. Some families, with the English imperial(皇室) family being a good example, have hereditary(遺傳的) diseases. This means their children will for sure have the family disease, which is a great trouble for these families. In the past, doctors could do nothing about hereditary diseases. But gene technology can solve this problem perfectly. The scientist just need to find the wrong gene and correct it and a healthy child will be born.
Some people are worrying that the gene research can be used to manufacture human beings in large quantities. In the past few years, scientists have succeeded in cloning a sheep; therefore these people predict that human babies would soon be cloned. But I believe cloned babies will not come out in large quantities, for most couples in the world can have babies in very normal way. Of course, the governments must take care to control gene technology.
【小題1】 What does "these two killers" in the second paragraph refer to?

A.Gene technology and another treatment of the two diseases.
B.The two murderers who killed the cloned baby
C.The two diseases of cancer and heart disease
D.Hereditary diseases and cancer
【小題2】What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.How gene technology can be applied in the field of treating hereditary diseases.
B.Gene technology can be used to clone human babies.
C.Gene technology can help people to give birth of a baby.
D.Gene technology can help the English imperial family out
【小題3】In what way gene technology can help to treat hereditary diseases?
A.Using gene technology, people with hereditary diseases can have more living days.
B.Using gene technology, scientist finds the wrong gene and corrects it.
C.Using gene technology, human babies can be cloned.
D.Doctors can cure cancer and heart disease with the help of gene technology.
【小題4】 What is the main purpose of writing this passage?
A.Expressing the writer’s idea that gene technology will benefit people
B.Telling people the advantages of gene technology
C.Telling the readers that gene technology will not benefit people
D.Explaining that gene technology will also do harm to the humanity

The Food and Drug Administration is, again, threatening to impose(征稅) milk and meat from cloned animals on a public that opposes the technology and its products.

Respected polls report that more than 60% of Americans think animal cloning is immoral, and that most people said they wouldn’t knowingly eat the products even if the FDA approved them. But because the FDA would allow cloned meat and milk to be sold without identifying labels, consumers wouldn’t be able to avoid them. The FDA has consistently tilted toward those who want cloned milk and meat in our food. Agency officials have repeatedly asserted that science shows cloned milk and meat are safe for humans. But the FDA has never published the complete scientific studies it says support that claim.

The argument that cloning is safe for animals is unconvincing. Cloned meat and milk offer no public economic benefits. Having cloned cows produce more milk wouldn’t reduce milk prices. US farmers produce more milk than we drink, and the government is required to buy the surplus. Since 2000, dairy support programs have cost taxpayers more than $ 5 billion.

Most important, this first decision to advance animal biotechnology raises ethical issues beyond the FDA’s expertise(專家意見). Techniques used to clone animals will advance the ability to clone humans-and create animals with human genes. Neither the agency nor animal scientists are qualified to tell us whether and when it is ethically acceptable for humans to alter the essential nature of animals. We need a national discussion, including ethicists and religious leaders, to consider the wisdom of cloned and transgenic animals. Given the risk of unintended consequences, we should proceed cautiously. The president should halt further FDA action on cloning and set in motion(運作) a process for beginning this broader discussion.

1. The author’s attitude towards cloning is __________.

       A. standing in the middle      B. opposed     C. approving      D. supportive

3. In US many people buy cloned foods __________.

       A. to support the new technique

       B. because FDA approved them

       C. because they cannot tell which is cloned food

       D. because they cannot read the labels.

3. From the text we know that cloning technique ___________.

       A. developed well enough to clone human beings

       B. may cause unintended bad results to human beings

       C. will bring more unexpected economic benefits

D. is supported by ethicists and religious leaders

4. What’s the best title of this passage?

A.Public Is Against Cloned Food     B.Benefits of Cloned Food

C.Cloned Food Is Illegal             D.Technique in Cloned Food
