Dobson Ranch Housing Association 1000 Sidewinder Road Mesa,AZ 85202

October 15

Mr and Mrs Fred Deacon 1442 Saddleback Road Mesa,AX 85205 Dear Mr and Mrs Fred Deacon,

I am writing this letter to congratulate you on your new purchase of a house in the Dobson Ranch area. We feel that this is one of the best neighborhoods of high quality in the city of Mesa, and we are happy to be able to call you neighbors.

For your information, there are a few things we would like to tell you. One is that there are certain duties that go with living in Dobson Ranch. In order to keep property (房地產(chǎn)) values at the highest possible levels,we insist that everyone who lives in Dobson Ranch take care of their property. This means that the grass needs to be cut regularly, branches of the trees and bushes should be cut off,and there should be no unattractive additions to houses, nor should houses be painted in colors like red or blue. If you want to make any additions to your house, you need our permission first.

The people of Dobson Ranch also have monthly meetings to discuss various issues of concern in our community. You are welcome to attend. We typically hold meetings on the first Saturday of every month at 7 : 00 PM at the Dobson Ranch Community Center. You will receive a notice via e-mail a few days before every meeting as a reminder. We hope that you will join us as much as you see fit.

Again, welcome to the neighborhood, and I look forward to meeting you soon.

Sincerely

Juan Sanchez

President

Dobson Ranch Housing Association

October 20 Dear Mr Sanchez,

Thank you very much for your letter welcoming us to the neighborhood. My wife and I appreciate your concern, and we also appreciate you letting us know about the various rules that apply to this neighborhood. Please do not worry about us. No matter where we live,we always try to be neighbors taking care to do our work properly. We too are well aware of property values. To be honest,we are actually pleased that there are regulations that must be obeyed. In the past,we have had neighbors who have not taken care of their homes and yards; at least we know that we will not have to worry about that here.

As for the meetings, thank you for your kind invitation, but tm afraid that you probably won’t see us too often. My work takes me out of town,so when I,m not traveling,I prefer to stay home. Similarly,my wife works long hours at the hospital and prefers to spend her days off relaxing at home. However,if we have the time,we will try to make it to a meeting. Again, thank you for welcoming us.

Sincerely Fred Deacon

Claude Monet is surely one of the most famous French artists of all. Monet was particularly interested in the effect of light and would paint the same scene in different lighting conditions or times of the day. For example, he painted around 20 versions of the Rouen Cathedral from dawn to dusk. His most famous paintings include his Water lilies series.

With these increased pressures and difficulty in ensuring a graduate job, more people are turning to recruitment(招聘) agencies for help. Luke Harper wrote for the Independent warning students to be cautious when using graduate recruitment agencies in their job hunt. The article’s main argument against graduate recruitment agencies is that they are looking to sign people up to the agency and harvest data, without having any real intention to personally find them a job.

The fundamental problem with this approach is a basic misunderstanding of how the recruitment part works. One of the more common ways is that recruitment agencies aim to find you a job to secure a fee from their clients(客戶). Recruitment agencies operate as a business, not a careers service and are not expected to find you a job while you wait around.

There is no denying that among the recruitment agencies, there are some CV(簡歷) hungry, cut and shut agencies that are uninterested in the candidates they have on their books. However, nowadays these are in the minority and don’t tend to last very long.

Paul Farrer, Chief Executive of a leading recruitment agency is worried that a few bad apples are ruining the reputation of what is an excellent part. Farrer said “The trouble with such an imbalanced and misleading article is that some graduates may now be put off approaching recruitment agencies who may well be able to help them.”

Professionals in the industry are cautious of how some of the less respectable agencies operate. Earnest(認(rèn)真的) recruiters believe that graduates should be aware that some of these agencies will take on graduates for all their details rather than helping them find a job, like Harper mentioned. To fight this, Farrar advises that “Graduates should have a simple checklist before approaching any agency. Has the agency taken the time to talk to me? Have they invited me to a face-to-face meeting? Have they guaranteed not to forward my CV to any employer without my permission? These three steps will safeguard every application.”

Farrer also pointed out that that is not the only safety net that graduates can rely on. He said “Graduates can also check to see if the agencies are members of either APSC or the REC, the two trade bodies they can make an official complaint to. The vast majority of recruitment agencies are professional organizations that help place thousands of graduates every year and poorly researched articles help no one.”

1.The main purpose of this passage is _______________ graduate recruitment agencies.

A. to advise readers to be cautious of

B. to argue against some misjudgment against

C. to explain why there is a prejudice against

D. to seek the solutions to the problems caused by

B. Recruitment agencies actually do the same work as a careers service.

C. Job hunters’ detailed information is of value to recruitment agencies.

D. A member of APSC or the REC will not cheat its clients.

3.What advice does Paul Farrer give graduates to avoid less respectable agencies?

A. Consulting professionals before giving their personal details to an agency.

B. Making a face-to-face investigation into an agency before approaching it.

C. Guaranteeing that the agency will not forward their CV to any employer.

D. Selecting some agencies that are monitored by official trade bodies.

4.What is the author’s attitude towards graduate recruitment agencies?

A. Neutral. B. Positive.

C. Negative. D. Not Clear.

科目:高中英語 來源:2015-2016學(xué)年河南洛陽高二下期中考試英語試卷(解析版) 題型:聽力第三部分

For more than twenty years scientists have been seeking to understand the mystery of the “sixth sense” of direction. By trying out ideas and solving problems one by one, they are now getting closer to one answer. One funny idea from observing animals in nature is that animals might have a built-in compass.

Many birds migrate(遷徙)twice a year between their summer homes and winter homes. Some of them fly for thousands of kilometers and mostly at night. Experiments have shown that some birds can recognize star patterns. But they can keep on course even under cloudy skies. How can they do that? A common bird that does not migrate but is great at finding its way home is the horning pigeon(鶴子)and they have been widely studied. One interesting experiment was to attach little magnets (磁鐵,磁場)to the birds’ heads to block their magnetic sense — just as a loud radio can keep you from hearing a call to dinner. On sunny days, that did not fool the pigeons. Evidently they can use the sun to tell which way they are going. But on cloudy days, the pigeons with magnets could not find their way. It was as if the magnets had blocked their magnetic sense. Similar experiments with the same kind of results were done with honeybees.

In spite of the experiments, the idea of an animal compass seemed pretty extraordinary. How would animals get the magnetic stuff for a compass? An answer came from an unexpected source, A scientist was studying bacteria that lived in the mud of ponds. He found accidentally little rod-like bacteria that all swam together in one direction 一 north. In fact, the bacteria had made themselves into little magnets that could line up with the earth’s magnet.

The big news was that a living thing, even a simple bacterium, can make magnetite. That led to a search to see whether animals might have it. By using a special instrument, scientists were able to find magnetite in bees and birds, and even in fish. In each animal, except for the bee, the magnetic stuff was always in or close to the brain.

Thus, the idea of a built-in animal compass began to seem reasonable.

1.The main purpose of this passage is to .

A. explain how the animal compass was invented

B. answer how an animal would get the magnetic stuff for a compass

C .introduce a famous experiment

D. prove the idea that animals might have a built-in compass

2.Which of the following can we infer from Paragraph 3?

A. The bacteria magnetic sense seemed to be the same as the earth’s.

B. The earth itself is a big magnet with which something magnetic might lines up

C. Little rod-like bacteria were found to swim north together through experiments.

D. Migrant birds can easily lose their way because of lacking magnetie.

3.The underlined words “keep on course” in the second paragraph means“

A.stay in the correct flying route

B.lose one’s way

C.remain calm

D.recognize star patterns

4.Where is probably the built-in magnet for a fish according to the scientists?

A.Close to its stomach. B.In its heart.

C.Far from its brain. D.Inside its head.
