Historians and archaeologists have defined periods of human history for centuries by the technologies or materials that made the greatest impact on society. This includes the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age. But what age are we in now? That question can be answered with one word for some researchers. Plastics.
“Plastic has redefined our material culture and the artifacts we leave behind. It will be found in stratified(分層的) layers in our trash deposits(沉積層). ” That’s according to John Marston, an archaeologist.
The wide variety of synthetic polymers(合成聚合物) would not exist if it weren’t for human action. About six billion tons of plastics have been made and spread around the planet. They have been spread from forests to oceans ever since the first plastic polymers were invented.
Plastics are one of the most significant changes that humans have made to the Earth’s makeup. Most plastics don’t easily degrade. This only adds to the problem. Recycling isn’t an adequate solution. Not all types of plastic are easily recyclable. And there are only a few recycling plants that can process all varieties of plastic.
According to Debra Winter, writer for The Atlantic, this means that many of the materials thrown into recycling bins can cross the planet several times before they are processed. They are made into rugs, sweaters, or they are used to make other bottles. Millions of tons of plastics are recycled every year, but millions more end up in landfills or the ocean. The problem has reached the point where it’s possible that in just a few decades there might be more plastic in the world’s oceans than fishes.
“Plastics have a supposed lifespan of over 500 years, so it’s safe to say that every plastic bottle you have used exists somewhere on this planet, in some form or another,” Winter writes.
The damage may already be done. It may be too late for human populations worldwide to change their plastic using ways. So the Plastic Age might soon take its place next to the Bronze Age and the Iron Age in the history of human civilization.
【1】Why do people call our age the Plastic Age?
A.Because plastics are not naturally made.
B.Because humans create plastics.
C.Because plastics influence the world greatly.
D.Because historians and archaeologists think so.
【2】According to the passage, how are most plastics dealt with currently?
A.They are recycled.
B.They are degraded.
C.They are thrown away.
D.They are made into bottles.
【3】What is the author’s attitude to the Plastic Age?
A.Negative.B.Ambiguous.
C.Favorable.D.Unconcerned.
【4】What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Plastics have ruined our environment.
B.We must stop using plastics altogether.
C.Human beings are in the Plastic Age.
D.Plastics are significant to human development.

根據(jù)第一段第一句“Historians and archaeologists have defined periods of human history for centuries by the technologies or materials that made the greatest impact on society.”可知,歷史學(xué)家和考古學(xué)家是使用對(duì)社會(huì)造成最大影響的技術(shù)或材料來界定人類歷史時(shí)期的,第一段第二句“But what age are we in now? That question can be answered with one word for some researchers. Plastics.”
根據(jù)第五段中的“Millions of tons of plastics are recycled every year, but millions more end up in landfills or the ocean.”
根據(jù)第四段 “Plastics are one of the most significant changes that humans have made to the Earth’s makeup. Most plastics don’t easily degrade. This only adds to the problem. ”可知,塑料是人類對(duì)地球構(gòu)成做出的最顯著的改變之一。大多數(shù)塑料不易降解。這只會(huì)加劇問題。說明塑料帶來嚴(yán)重問題;根據(jù)文章內(nèi)容可知,作者在文章中描述了塑料垃圾對(duì)社會(huì)造成的巨大負(fù)面影響,尤其在最后一段中 “The damage may already be done. It may be too late for human populations worldwide to change their plastic using ways.” 故選A。
【4】
由第一段話第一句 “Historians and archaeologists have defined periods of human history for centuries by the technologies or materials that made the greatest impact on society.”可知,歷史學(xué)家和考古學(xué)家是使用對(duì)社會(huì)造成最大影響的技術(shù)或材料來界定人類歷史時(shí)期的, 第一段第二句“But what age are we in now? That question can be answered with one word for some researchers. Plastics.” 易錯(cuò)項(xiàng)為A項(xiàng),A 項(xiàng)的 “Plastics have ruined our environment”只是在說明塑料毀壞環(huán)境,既沒有說明成為塑料時(shí)代,也沒有點(diǎn)名對(duì)世界的嚴(yán)重影響,范圍比較小。
因此,考生直接抓住第一段中的“Historians and archaeologists have defined periods of human history for centuries by the technologies or materials that made the greatest impact on society.”

The Board Meeting had come to an end. Bob started to stand up and knocked into the table, spilling his coffee over his notes. 'How embarrassing! I am getting so clumsy(笨拙的) in my old age. '
Everyone had a good laugh, and soon we were all telling stories of our most embarrassing moments. It came around to Frank, who sat quietly listening to the others. Someone said, 'Come on, Frank. Tell us your most embarrassing moment. '
Frank laughed and began to tell us of his childhood. 'I grew up in San Pedro. My Dad was a fisherman. He had his own boat, but it was hard making a living on the sea. He worked hard and would stay out until he caught enough to feed a big family. Not just enough for our family, but also for his Mom and Dad and the other kids that were still at home. '
He looked at us and said, 'I wish you could have met my Dad. He was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the seas for his catch. When you got close to him, he smelled like the ocean. No matter how much my mother washed his clothes, they would still smell of the sea and of fish. '
Frank's voice dropped a bit. 'When the weather was bad, he would drive me to school. He had this old truck that he used in his fishing business. That truck was older than he was. Half the time, he would slam to a stop and the old truck would belch(噴出) a cloud of smoke. He would pull right up in front, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over and give me a goodbye kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy. It was so embarrassing for me. Here, I was twelve years old. I was a big boy and my Dad would lean over and kiss me goodbye! '
He paused and then went on, 'I remember the day I decided I was too old for a goodbye kiss. When we got to the school and came to a stop, he had his usual big smile. He started to lean toward me, but I put my hand up and said, 'No, Dad. ' '

At one time it was the dream of many little girls to become a nurse. 【1】 Recently about 2,000,000 nurses are needed and 60 percent of all hospitals in the US have shortages, large enough to threaten the quality of care provided.
What has become of these women in white? 【2】 One possibility is the fact that women have greater career options. In the past, women who chose to work outside the home had two basic choices: nursing or teaching. Today, more women than ever are in the workforce, but their options have greatly increased. 【3】In fact, women today are found in nearly every field of work. Nursing has been left behind, as women move on to jobs with higher pay and greater status. A woman or man in the nursing field is often looked down upon as “merely a nurse”. Teachers may be also at fault. 【4】
Americans are living longer than ever and requiring more medical attention. 【5】 Obviously a larger population requires more nurses. AIDS and other diseases have caused more and more people to need nursing care. Usually fatal(致命的)diseases mean long hospital stay, that is to say, more nurses are needed to care for these patients. It is estimated that the demand for nurses will be doubled the supply in the coming ten years.
A.The answer lies in not one but several causes.
B.Many students are actually away from nursing, told by teachers that they are “too bright to be a nurse”.
C.Today, however, many nurses have lost their jobs and led a poor life.
D.There are women doctors, lawyers, firefighters and police officers.
E.Today, however, America is facing its worst nurse shortage since World War I.
F.Women are treated unfairly when applying for jobs for quite a long time.
G.In fact, the number of elderly patients has almost doubled in the past twenty years.

【題目】 It's a tragedy (悲劇)that could be avoided: every year, more than 400 people in Britain die while waiting for a replacement organ for their bodies. Although organ transplants(器官移植)have been saving lives for more than 60 years, the right body part is often not available at the right time simply because not enough people choose to be donors. Should people therefore be required to allow their organs to be used by others after death?
The British Medical Association (BMA), which represents doctors in Britain, says yes. A system of "presumed consent (默許) " would automatically make everyone over the age of 16 an organ donor .Individuals would be allowed to put out, that is to say, decide not to be an organ donor, if that's what they prefer. The BMA points to much higher organ donation rates in countries that have opt-out systems, such as Spain, Belgium, Austria and the Czech Republic.
England's chief medical officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, also wants to change the organ-donor system from opt-in to opt-out. All of this sounds like very good news for the 7,500 people in the UK who are waiting for transplants of critical organs, tissues, skin and bones.
Britain's National Health Service (NHS) recently counts 14.3 million organ donors on a list which began in 1994. Not everyone wants to participate, however, according to the NHS, 90 percent of the British strongly support organ donation, but only 23 percent are on the organ-donor list.
Why the discrepancy(差異)? One reason is that organ donation is a personal matter. Another reason may be indecision: when families are not sure about a dead relative's wishes, 40 percent decide not to donate his or her organs. Interestingly, religion has little to do with a decision not to donate. All six of the main religions in Britain support organ donation and transplantation.
The government decided in 2018 how the system of organ donation should work--- without a policy of presumed consent. Opinion among members of parliament (議會(huì)) continues to be divided; but the tragedy goes on: as things are now, one in 10 Britons in need of an organ will never get one.
【1】What does the tragedy in Para.1 refer to?
A.People are required to be organ donors.
B.Organ transplants could save lives for more than 60 years.
C.More and more donors' organs are not proper for operation.
D.Many patients have to die because of no replacement organ.
【2】According to Para. 4, most British people______.
A.support organ donation without actionB.want to participate in organ donation
C.are willing to donate their organsD.don't like NHS' activity
【3】What' s the main idea of the passage?
A.Analyzing the tragedy of organ donation.
B.Persuading people to support organ donation.
C.Praising those people who donate their organs.
D.Listing government' s measures on organ donation.

As Grandma gets older, she is getting more and more forgetful. I went to a nearby supermarket with her on last week. I pushed the shopping cart around to load it with what we want to buy. I was looking at some snacks while I realized Grandma was missed. I looked for her everywhere and she was nowhere to be found. So I turned to security guard who was on duty with tear in my eyes. He comforted me patient and told me to wait by the apple stand when she and other guards were searching for Grandma. It was not long before Grandma was found and brought to me. I was very grateful that I decided to put it forward and help others whenever possible.

Many people don’t have a home because of an illness or because they lost their jobs. They have bad health and can’t start working, and because of that, they can’t pay for a doctor, so it’s a never-ending circle. Homeless people don’t have anywhere to go, so they have to sleep on the streets, covering themselves with newspapers and looking through the rubbish cans to find some food or warmer clothes.
Seeing these horrible living conditions, the Australian charity Beddown decided to help these people in need. They came up with an amazing idea to make shelters in places that are vacant at night-like parking lots! The organization asked one of the largest car park-opera tors, Secure Parking, and they agreed upon it.
“It was great to start with a group of our volunteers to help us and set up some beds. Although as expected we had a few challenges to overcome, it was good to start bringing Bed down to life. Beddown will provide an immediate response for those who can not sleep well to access safe, find shelter-and access to a real bed and a great night’s sleep. We will work with our other partners to provide long-term solutions to providing our guests with accommoda-tion, education and employment opportunities.” The founders of Beddown said in one of their Instagram posts.
The charity also provided other services to the guests, like doctors, nurses, dentists, hairdressers. They gave them new clothing, a place to clean themselves and helped provide social services. “After spending the week here, having a good sleep at night, it reminded me of life and I want to begin my life again,” one homeless man said.

Knowing what not to do at checkout and properly preparing for it can turn a potentially heated situation into a quick thank you and goodbye. Below we compiled a list of things you should remember at hotel checkout.
1. Don’t be late to checkout
Hotels may add an outrageously high price for being just a half-hour late. If you know you won’t make the cutoff time, it never hurts to call ahead and try to negotiate a potential charge.
2. Don’t forget to double check the room and safe
Make sure you don’t leave anything behind. If you have an early flight or checkout time, pack up as much as you can the night before so that last-minute rush isn’t too hurried. Also, be sure to take out anything in the room safe.
3. Don’t freak out
Spitting venom (毒液) at the assistant manager standing behind the front desk probably won’t help when dealing with an unexpected item on the bill. Being empathetic about how difficult it can be to deal with annoyed customers will likely go much further.
4. Don’t pay with cash or debit card (借記卡)
Disputing your bill after paying with cash is a lot harder than working with a credit card company to get a charge back. If you pay with a debit card, you may not have the protection to challenge a charge.
5. Don’t have the hotel call you a cab
If you want to save a few dollars, plan ahead and check if a ride-sharing service is going to be cheaper than a cab to the airport.
【1】What may the hotel do if you are late for the checkout?
A.Negotiate a potential price.
B.Call ahead and cancel the reservation.
C.Charge extra money.
D.Give the room to other customers.
【2】What should you do when the receptionist meets angry customers?
A.Spit at the assistant manager.B.Argue with the front desk.
C.Show understanding to the situation.D.Go much further away from it.
【3】Why is it a good idea to use a ride-sharing service to get to the airport?
A.It helps the cab save dollars.
B.It reduces the burden of the hotel.
C.It is easy to get a charge back.
D.It costs the customers less money.
