No One Is Too Poor to Give
When Teresa,a widow with four young children, saw a notice from her church for all members to gather to deliver presents and food to a 16 family, she took $10 out of her savings jar and bought some ingredients to make three dozen 17 .She got to the church parking lot just in time to join the convoy going to the home that was to 18 the people’s help.
The route was 19 ,and she was astonished when the cars pulled up in front of her house. When the pastor saw her,he said,“ We 20 expected you to join us ,
Teresa. We know it’s been a great 21 since your husband died, and we all wanted
to 22 you.”
Although she was 23 being the object of charity,Teresa didn’t want to 24 anyone so she 25 said,“ Well,at least I can share these cookies with our 26 .”
This parable teaches us that no one is too 27 to help others and that true charity is rooted in love and compassion. 28 of spirit is worse than economic distress.Teresa’s story 29 us that very few of us give as much as we could and should.
My friend Larry Rosen, president of the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles
30 me to the concept of “ sacrificial giving”— 31 in a large quantity up to a
point where one must 32 something that is desired.
You can start out easy.Take whatever 33 you are thinking of giving to charity, then 34 it.If that’s too much, increase it by 50 percent instead. The 35 is to stretch yourself. It will mean a lot to those you help, but it will mean as much to your heart.

Reading is an important activity for many Americans. Today, thousands of men, women and children belong to groups to discuss the books they read.
No one is sure how many Americans belong to reading groups called book clubs. Yet publishers and bookstores report that more and more people throughout the United States are joining them. Most of the clubs work the same way. Members read the same book at the same time. Then they meet to talk about the book. Members may be friends or people who live near each other. Or, they may be people who work together. Some book clubs develop from other organizations. Religious and community groups often establish book clubs.
Some Americans belong to reading groups on the Internet service. These groups include people around the world who communicate about books they read. These people send emails instead of meeting to discuss books. Book clubs may be for only women or only men. Or, they can be for husbands and wives together. Some are family groups where parents attend with their children. Children also may belong to book clubs of their own.

A caring mother is the single most important factor in preventing teenagers from abusing(濫用)drugs and alcohol, researchers said on Friday. An international study showed that teenagers living with both parents are less likely to suffer from alcohol and drug problems, and a strong maternal bond is the most effective way to fight against them.
“These findings suggest that living with both parents may prevent drug use.”said Dr.McArdle,of Newcastle University in northern England, who led the study. “They also suggest that attachment(感情眷念),particularly to mothers,is a more effective factor and that this is truly across cultures and substances.” The report, which is published in the journal Addiction, involved nearly 4,000 teenagers in England,Ireland,Italy,Germany and the Netherlands. They were questioned about their use of several kinds of drugs and alcohol. The teenagers also filled in questionnaires about their relationship with their parents and grandparents, how well they were supervised(監(jiān)護(hù))after school and whether they were allowed to meet friends at home.
“Both the quality of family relationships and the structure of families have significant influences on youth drug use,” McArdle said in a statement. But he added that a strong maternal bond offered the greatest protection against developing drug habits. The rate of drug abuse among teenagers living with both parents and who had a good relationship with their mother was 16.6 percent. If either factor was missing, the drug abuse rate rose to 32 percent.More than 42 percent of teenagers living in one parent families who did not have a strong bond with their mother used drugs.
