A poor traveler stopped under a tree to eat the boiled rice and vegetables which he had brought with him. A few metres away, there was a small shop by the side of the road where a woman was frying(煎)fish and selling it to travelers. The woman watched the poor traveler carefully, and when he finished his food and began to go, she shouted rudely, “Stop! You haven't paid me for the fried fish!”
“But I have not had any fried fish!” he said.
“But everyone can see that you enjoyed the smell of my fried fish with your rice and vegetables,” said the woman. “If you had not smelled the fish, your meal would not have been so pleasant.”
Soon passers-by gathered around, and although they supported the poor traveler, they had to admit that wind was blowing from the shop to the place where he had eaten, and that it had carried the smell of the fried fish to him.
Finally, the woman took the poor traveler to a judge, who said, “The woman says that you ate your meal with the smell of her fried fish.” The traveler agreed that the wind was blowing from the woman's shop to the place where he ate his rice and vegetables and that it carried the smell of her fried fish to his nose while he was eating. “So he must pay for it. What does your fried fish cost?” he asked the woman.
“Twenty-five cents a plate,” she answered, delighted.
“Then go outside together,” said the judge. “There the traveler must hold up a twenty-five-cent coin so that its shadow(影子)falls on the woman's hand. The price of the smell of a plate of fried fish is the shadow of the twenty-five-cent coin.”

The best way to come first is to go last.An analysis of almost 50 years of competitions--including Eurovision Song Contests and world skating championships--has found that contestants are more likely to win if they are among the last to appear before the judges.
The study by an American university appears to provide scientific proof(證據(jù))that the best man,or woman, does not always win.
It found that。on average, the last competitor to appear in the Eurovision Song Contest was more than twice as likely to win as the one who went on first.
The first rounds of figure-skating championships, for which the running order is selected at random, showed more dramatic results. The final skater had a 1 4 per cent chance of victory, making him or her more than four times as likely to win as the first skater.
The study showed a gradual worsening of chances for competitors who appeared earlier in the running order.A contestant who appears first in a contest is two per cent less likely to win than one who appears second.A contestant who appears second is two per cent less likely to win than one who appears third, and so on。
The findings are published in the March issue of Acta Psychologica,a scientific journal.
Robert Hardman,a senior lecturer in psychology at London Metropolitan University who specializes in the science of decision-making,said that the results were interesting。He suggested that the effect was caused by the limitations of the human memory.
“When people make comparisons;they aren’t really able to make a lot of fine-grade discrimination. When contestants appear at the beginning of a contest, judges have little to compare them to and are perhaps wary(謹(jǐn)慎的)of the scores they give,” he said.
“Later on,when judges are able t0 compare the contestants to those that have gone before,
they might give more extreme marks because they feel more confident about their judgments.”
11.Robert Hardman’s words mainly tell about his .
A.own achievement in the research
B.explanation for the findings
C.suggestion to solve the problem
D.comments on the findings
12 The first skater in the first round of figure skating championships had a percent chance of winning.
A.two B.three C.four D.six
13.According to the study, the best competitor does not always win possibly because he/she
_______.
A.fails to show his/her very best
B.is mistakenly put in the running order
C.meets with unfair judges
D.a(chǎn)ppears too early before the judges
14.Judging from the context, the underlined word “worsening” in the 5th paragraph should mean .
A.decrease in number
B.increase in degree
C.reduction in possibility
D.rising in quantity
15. What may be a problem with the judges according to the article?
A.They can’t remember things well enough.
B.They believe the first is seldom the best.
C.They don’t really know what is good.
D.They show favor towards the contestants they like.

“WHAT is the right weight for my height?” is one of the most common questions both boys and girls ask. With the summer holidays coming, many teenagers are thinking about how to get fit, in relation to their weight.
Because people have different body types, there is no single weight that is right for everyone. But there is a healthy weight range(范圍)for your height. It is called the Body Mass Index, or BMI. BMI is a formula that doctors use to see how much body fat a person has, based on his or her weight and height.
BMI = weight (in kilograms) / height2 (in meters). For adults, a BMI between 18.4 and 25 is healthy. For example, if a person is 1.75 meters, his standard weight should be between 56 kg and 76 kg. But things are more complicated for teens and children.
Young people go through a period of fast growth, called puberty (青春期). In this period the body begins making hormones (荷爾蒙) that cause great physical changes, like faster muscle growth and gains in height and weight.
The average person can expect to grow by as much as 25 centimeters during puberty before he or she reaches full adult height. But not everyone grows and develops at the same speed. Girls and boys differ greatly in the way they change as they grow.
This is why BMIs for teens are different according to gender(性別) and age. Doctors use the different percentiles (百分點(diǎn)) on a chart to decide whether teenagers or children are underweight or overweight.
A teen above the 95th percentile is considered overweight because 95 per cent of their age group have a smaller BMI. A teen below the 5th percentile is considered underweight.
Sounds complicated? To say it in an easy way, if you are a 16-year-old girl, your BMI should be between 17 to 24.7, as for boys of the same age, a healthy BMI score is between 17 and 24.
62. What is the purpose of the story?
A. To tell you how to keep fit.
B. To tell you a healthy range for your height.
C. To explain BMI.
D. To show how different boys and girls are during puberty.
63. The word “complicated” in Paragraph 3 probably means ______.
A. different B. interesting C. hard to explain D. surprising
64. How do doctors decide whether a teenager is underweight or overweight?
A. By checking whether their BMI is between 18.4 and 25.
B. By using a BMI chart showing different percentiles.
C. By checking whether their BMI is between 95% and 10%.
D. By visiting a health website.
