12.The 26-year-old computer technician is one of a growing number of British shoppers buying into the organic trend. And if he can't have the food delivered to his front door,he has to spend extra money at the supermarket to buy organic food."Organic produce is better, because the food is free of chemicals,"Gould said,"and you are generally supporting family farms instead of business. It is locally grown and seasonal,so it is tastier."Supermarkets across Britain are dependent on people like Gould to make money.
But a survey at two London supermarkets showed that what people believe about organic food is not always true. For instance, some approved pesticides (chemicals killing insects) can be used on organic products. And about three-quarters of organic food in Britain is not local but imported.
"The demand for organic food is increasing by about one third every year,"said Sue Flook,an official on Britain's organic produce.
In Britain, the Department for Environment,F(xiàn)ood and Rural Affairs sets the rules."Organic farming aims to avoid the use of artificial pesticides and fertilizers, and'no herbicides are permitted,"Flook said.
Organic organizations have also been fighting to keep genetically modified crops well away from their fields.
But for many shoppers, organic food is just too expensive.
"I think it is a marketing strategy and just a crazy trend. We have been eating the same food for thousands of years,"said Freya Koepping,a visitor in London.

9.Going soy is the way to go green
In 1829,U.S.farmers grew soybeans (大豆) for the first time.In the late 1800s,lots of farmers began to grow soybeans as food for cattle.In 1904,at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama,George Washington Carver began studying the soybean.His discoveries changed the way people thought about the soybean.No longer was it just a crop for cattle; it provided valuable protein and oil.Now soybean oil is the most popular source for an alternative fuel.
Fueling diesel (柴油) engines with vegetable oil started with the inventor Rudolf Diesel.When Diesel showed his engine at the 1900World Exhibition in Paris,it was running only on peanut oil,a kind of biodiesel.According to the United Soybean Board,biodiesel is a fuel made from vegetable oils or animal fats.
However,over the next 100years,diesel fuel was made largely from petroleum (石油).Interest was renewed in biodiesel in the mid-1970s when the energy shortage occurred,and gas prices surged upward throughout the United States.In spite of these conditions,commercial production did not take place until much later.In 1999,The National Biodiesel Board reported that 500,000gallons per day were produced.In 2000,production increased to 6.7million gallons per day.
With the continual rising costs of petroleum products in the new century,major corporations and the United States government have looked to new markets.Farmers are encouraged to grow soybeans in their fields,as the demand for soybean fuel increases.They can now get several gallons of fuel per acre of soybean.
Biodiesel is created by removing a thick liquid called glycerin from soybean oil.It is registered with the US Environmental Protection Agency as a pure fuel,which is known as B100,or as a fuel additive,which is called B20,a mixture of 20percent soy and 80percent petroleum-based diesel.
There are many benefits of soybean fuel.
Studies have shown that biodiesel from vegetable oil reduces petroleum consumption when used in place of petroleum diesel.
In addition,the use of biodiesel reduces CO2in the earth's atmosphere.This is due to the fact that growing soybeans consumes nearly four times as much CO2as the amount of CO2produced from biodiesel waste gases.
If you ever want to take a ride in a car or bus powered by soybeans,you can.The Agriculture Research Center (ARS ) National Visitor Center bus,which is used for Beltsville,Maryland farm tours,is running on biodiesel fuel.
ARS scientists are conducting biodiesel fuel research, and they are trying to find ways to make fuel from vegetable oils, animal fats, and used restaurant oils.
Biodiesel fuel costs more than regular diesel fuel.However,the price may drop if people use it more.We can look to the future with the hope that clean fuel sources will continue to be widespread in the United States and even around the world.

"Men aren't seeing doctors as often as they should,"says Dr.Gullotta."This is particularly so for the over-40s,when diseases tend to strike.According to a recent survey,95% of women aged between 15and early 40s see a doctor once a year,compared to 70% of men in the same age group.

Then there's the ostrich (鴕鳥)approach."Some men are scared of what might be there and would rather not know,"says Dr.Ross Cartmill.
"Most men get their cars serviced more regularly than they service their bodies,"Cartmill says.He believes most diseases that commonly affect men could be addressed by preventive check-ups.
"Prevention is cheaper in the long run than having to treat the diseases.Besides,the final cost is far greater,it's called premature death."

6.COPENHAGEN-The world is gathered in Copenhagen for the U.N.climate summit, but Denmark's bicycle-friendly capital has also given its name to a movement of cities trying to find a kinder way to travel to and from work.
Nearly 40 percent of Copenhagen's population cycle to work or school on ubiquitous(無處不在的) paved cycle paths. Many residents take to their bikes year-round,braving rain and snow through the winter in a city where the bicycles outnumber the people.
Amsterdam and Beijing too are known for their bicycles, but the Danish capital is where urban planners from around the world have been looking for ways to get their people out of cars and up onto bikes,an effort known as Copenhagenisation.
Klaus Bondam,Copenhagen's technical and environmental chief, calls himself a"mega cyclist"and says the bike's popularity stems partly from high taxes on cars which meant working-class Danes could not afford to drive in the 1930s and 1940s."Today you'll meet everybody on the bicycle lanes-women and men, rich and poor, old and young."Bondam said.
The local government has during the last three years invested more than 250 million crowns ($49.42 million) in bicycle lanes and to make the traffic safer for bicyclists.Today around a third of the population drive cars to work or study, another third take public transport, while 37 percent cycle--a figure the city aims to increase to 50 percent by 2015.
There are many benefits when citizens choose bicycles over cars:pollution and noise decline, public health improves, and more people on bikes or walking creates a sense of safety in the city.Fewer parked cars leaves more space for playgrounds, parks, shopping areas and other useful public places.

10.Disposing (處理) of waste has been a problem since humans started producing it.As more and more people choose to live close together in cities,the waste disposal problem becomes increasingly difficult.
During the eighteenth century,it was usual for several neighboring towns to get together to select a faraway spot as a dump site.Residents or trash haulers (垃圾拖運者) would transport household rubbish,rotted wood,and old possessions to the site.Periodically some of the trash was burned and the rest was buried.The unpleasant sights and smells caused no problem because nobody lived close by.Factories,mills,and other industrial sites also had waste to be disposed of.Those located on rivers often just dumped the unwanted remains into the water.Others built huge burners with chimneys to deal with the problem.
Several facts make these choices unacceptable to modern society.The first problem is space.Dumps,which are now called landfills,are most needed in heavily populated areas.Such areas rarely have empty land suitable for this purpose.Property is either too expensive or too close to residential neighborhoods.Long distance trash hauling has been a common practice,but once farm areas are refusing to accept rubbish from elsewhere,cheap land within trucking distance of major city areas is nonexistent.Awareness (意識) of pollution dangers has resulted in more strict rules of waste disposal.Pollution of rivers,ground water,land and air is a price people cannot longer pay to get rid of waste.The amount of waste,however,continues to grow.
Recycling efforts have become common place,and many towns require their people to take part.Even the most efficient recycling programs,however,can hope to deal with only about 50percent of a city's reusable waste.

64.The most suitable title for this passage would beD.
A.Places for Disposing Waste       B.Waste Pollution Dangers

66.What can be inferred from the third paragraph?C
A.Farm areas will continue accepting waste from the city in modern society.
B.There is cheap land to bury waste in modern society.
C.It is difficult to find space to bury waste in modern society.
D.Ways to deal with waste in modern society stay the same.

The latest incident was the last straw.Impulsively(沖動地),I had pushed Mr.Ford,my math teacher,down a flight of steps at school.He broke his arm in two places.Anyway,he had agreed not to accuse me as a favor to my dad,who was in the middle of a tight race for sheriff(執(zhí)法官) in our town.But my reckless behavior had my dad's closest advisor talking.
"John,he's your son and he's a kid,but he is dragging you down,"I heard Jake Hutch tell my dad through his closed office door the night after I pushed Mr.Ford."If you can't make your son obey the rules,how can you make the law obeyed in this town?"
So,off to Pisgah National Forest I went.I imagined hours of untold abuse at the hands of some strong sergeants(軍士).I was determined no to be broken.I was who I was.
Nearly every day for six months,a small group of other troubled teens and I carried our 30-pound backpacks on a difficult journey covering about 10miles.We hiked in a rough wilderness that seemed untouched by civilization.
Our sergeants were firm but kind,not frightening as I had imagined.We learned how to make a fire without matches and create a shelter with branches and grass.We learned which plants were safe to eat out in the wild.I felt myself change.I was calm and often reflective.My old,impulsive self was gone.
One morning,six months later,my dad came to pick me up.I ran to hug him and saw relief and love in his eyes.
"So what's it like being sheriff?"I asked on the ride home.
"I lost the race,Danny,"he said.
