It was an exciting day as I first entered the classroom for my first lesson in the USA. My heart was beating
very hard when the professor asked everyone to introduce themselves. I was very anxious and did not hear
anyone else's introduction. I buried myself in what I was going to say.
Classes went on and I noticed my American classmates were very active in class. My unwillingness to speak
during class started to worry me when I realized that I was ignored in class. But I did not give up. One simple
way I broke down this fear of speaking was to arrive 10 to 15 minutes earlier at the classroom. It gave me time
to _____ class discussions.
The person whom I feared most was the professor. So I found every chance to speak with him before and
after class. When I did not have the chance to talk with the professor in class, I wrote an e-mail or made a date
with him outside the class with questions I had. These were very effective ways to help me speak freely in
class! Since the chance of expressing myself in class was limited, I finished all of my reading and written tasks
before class. One time, the professor asked a question about the reading homework. The whole class was silent
and I suddenly raised my hand and answered it perfectly! That moment I set the world on fire.

Once I started participating in class, I realized how valuable it was. Class discussion was the best way to
learn and memorize things. It also made class a living and enjoyable experience. Participating in class is also like
climbing a ladder. I often prepared very simple questions to use at the beginning of class. Once I started to
speak, it was easier to speak up more. Classroom is the place to learn, so no one would consider you as a fool
even if you put forward simple questions in class.

We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded. and missed the other car’s back end by just inches! The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, turned his head angrily and started yelling bad words at us.

My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was friendly. So, I said, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to hospital!” And this was what my taxi driver told me, which I call “The Law of the Garbage Truck”.

Many people are like garbage trucks and they run around full of garbage, full of frustration , full of anger, and full of disappointment. And their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump(傾倒)it. And if you let them, they’ll dump it on you. When someone wants to dump on you, don’t take it personally. You just simile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You’ll be happy you did.

So this was it: “The Law of the Garbage Truck”. I started thinking: how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and spread it to other people: at home , on the streets? It was that day I said, “I’m not going to do that any more.”

I began to see garbage trucks. I see the burden they are carrying. I see them coming to drop it off. And like my taxi driver, I don’t                            . I just simile, wave, and move on.

Good leaders know they have to be ready for their next meeting. Good parents know that they have to welcome their children home from school with hugs and kisses. What about you? The mark of a successful person is how quickly they can get back their focus on what’s important.

It's natural to greet friends with a smile and a wave. When you do this, your face and body work together
to show your friends that you're happy to see them. But what happens if your face and body send mixed
messages? Scientists have recently deal with these questions. They found that when a person is looking at your
face, he or she might not believe what he or she sees if your body language doesn't match the feeling that your
face shows.
Studying such mixed messages is nothing new for scientists. Previously, they had found that the tone of a
person's voice can be more important than the words that are spoken. For example, most people tend not to
believe a person who says in a flat voice,"I'm so excited."
When it came to emotions conveyed by facial expressions and body language, most scientists suspected
that the face was more important. To test if this was true, psychologists from the Netherlands and Boston
showed people a number of pictures of isolated faces and isolated bodies (with faces blurred out) that showed
anger or fear. They also showed pictures in which angry or scared faces were paired with angry or scared
bodies.
An angry face had low eyebrows and tight lips. A scared face had high eyebrows and a slightly open
mouth. An angry body had arms back and shoulders at an angle, as if ready to fight. A scared body had arms
forward and shoulders square, as if ready to defend.
Using the pictures, the researchers asked people to quickly press a button that matched the correct facial
emotion: anger or fear. When people looked only at faces, they chose the right emotion about 81 percent of
the time. But when people looked at a mismatched picture-a scared face with an angry body, for example-they
correctly guessed the emotion on the face only 64 percent of the time.
These results told the researchers that mixed signals can confuse people. Even when people pay attention
to the face, body language subtly influences which emotion they read.
So, your body language is important for telling people how you feel. And if you want to be understood, it
helps to avoid sending mixed messages.

It is generally believed that nowadays young people lack the manners that their parents' generation
expects them to have. Although it is true that there is a difference in the generations,I do not believe that
it is fair'to say that today'syouths have bad manners.
In the first place, the fact that young people do not always shake hands only reflects a move away from
the formali-ties( 禮節(jié))  of the past.  It does not show lack of respect, but simply the present trend towards more relaxed social com-
munication.  Similarly, the way that we speak to each other is surely a manner of personal choice.  Even
though we maynot greet each other formally, this has nothing to do with manners. Youngsters have simply
developed their own greet-ings.
Furthermore , I strongly oppose the opinion that young people are impolite and show lack of
consideration of others._____,most young people have perfect manners.  Naturally, there are always
exceptions( 例外).  Even older mem-bers of society can be ill-mannered at times.
As far as I am concemed, the complaints about young people today are entirely without foundation.
Although thereare different attitudes towards manners in the generations, that shouldn't be considered as
rudeness. I suppose that any-one who says such things has not really tried to speak to the young
generation. If he or she did,I am sure they wouldfind that we are just like everyone else.
To conclude,I think people wrongly regard the lack of formality as bad manners.  After all,
youngsters follow exam-ples set by others,so maybe the world around us has become less formal.
