I’m a senior 3 student. The college entrance exams are in the way and everyone around us is trying their best to help me. At school, all the teachers work very hardly, encouraging us to build up our confidence. Wherever we meet with difficulties, they are ready to come to our help. Meanwhile, our school also did a lot for us. For example, the library stays open up in the evenings. At home, we are also taken well care of and our parents often tell us to have good rest. I’m very grateful to the efforts of our parents and teachers. I’m determining to try my best to prepare for the exams.

【題目】Almost every machine with moving parts has wheels, yet no one knows exactly when the first wheel was invented or what it was used for. We do know, however, that they existed over 5,500 years ago in ancient Asia.

The oldest known transport wheel was discovered in 2002 in Slovenia. It is over 5,100 years old. Evidence suggests that wheels for transport didn't become popular for a while, though. This could be because animals did a perfectly good job of carrying farming tools and humans around.

But it could also be because of a difficult situation. While wheels need to roll on smooth surfaces(光滑表面), roads with smooth surfaces weren't going to be built until there was plenty of demand for them. Finally, road surfaces did become smoother, but this difficult situation appeared again a few centuries later. There had been no important changes in wheel and vehicle design before the arrival of moden road design.

In the mid-1700s, a Frenchman came up with a new design of road—a base layer (層) of large stones covered with a thin layer of smaller stones. A Scotsman improved on this design in the 1820s and a strong, lasting road surface became a reality. At around the same lime, metal hubs (the central part of a wheel) came into being, followed by the pneumatic tyre(充氣輪胎) in 1846. Alloy(合金) wheels were invented in 1967, sixty years after the appearance of tarmacked roads (柏油路). As wheel design took off, vehicles got faster and faster.

【1】 What might explain why transport wheels didn't become popular for some time?

A. Few knew how to use transport wheels.

B. Humans carried farming tools just as well.

C. Animals were a good means of transport.

D. The existence(存在)of transport wheels was not known.

【2】How is the last paragraph mainly developed?

A. By giving examples.

B. By making comparisons.

C. By giving discussion

D. By making classifications.(分類)

【3】What is the passage mainly about?

A. The beginning of road design.

B. The development of transport wheels.

C. The history of public transport.

D. His invention of fast-moving vehicles.

【題目】閱讀理解

A scientist turns out to be able to see the future by offering each of some four-year-olds a piece of candy and watching how he or she deals with it. Some children reach eagerly for the treat they see. Some last a few minutes before they give in. But others are determined to wait until the last moment.

By the time the children reach high school, something remarkable has happened. A survey found that those who as four-year-olds had enough self-control to hold out generally grew up to be more popular, adventurous, confident and dependable. The children who gave in to temptation early on were more likely to be lonely, easily frustrated and inflexible .Actually, the ability to delay reward is a sign of emotional intelligence which doesn’t show up on an IQ test.

The hardware of the brain and the software of the mind have long been scientists’ concerns. But brain theory can’t explain what we wonder about most, like the question why some people remain upbeat in the face of troubles that would sink a less resistant soul.

Here comes the theory of Daniel Goleman, writer of Emotional Intelligence: when it comes to predicting people’s success, brain ability as measured by IQ may actually matter less than the qualities of mind once thought of as “character”.

EQ is not the opposite of IQ. What researchers have been trying to understand is how they work together; how one’s ability to handle stress, for instance, affects the ability to concentrate and put ntelligence to use. Among the elements for success, researchers now generally agree that IQ counts for about 20%; the rest depends on everything from social class to luck.

While many researchers in this relatively new field are glad to see emotional issues finally taken seriously, some few fear EQ invites misuse.

【1】The experiment with the four-year-olds makes it clear that______ .

A. the age of 4 is a proper time for scientific experiment

B. emotional intelligence won’t show up until adolescence

C. the ability of self-control plays a role in personal success

D. candy can be used to measure a person’s emotional intelligence

【2】The underlined word “upbeat” in Paragraph 4 probably means______ .

A. kind B. floating C. excited D. cheerful

【3】Why does the author mention the experiment at the beginning of the text?

A. To amuse both the children and readers.

B. To prove the scientist’s wisdom.

C. To introduce the topic of the text.

D. To show us how to do an IQ test.

【1】 You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so. However, anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here is how:

Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list. you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. 2 A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you realize what is happening to your time.

Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of eeverything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

Make good use of your time in class. 3 Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. 4 If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.

5 You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

A. This will help you understand the next class.

B. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.

C. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.

D. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.

E. Maybe you are an average student.

F. There are other methods that might help you with your studying.

G. Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher says in class.
