Strange Baby-Naming Laws

Germany

Parents are banned by law from using last names and the names of objects and products as first names. A child’s first name must clearly show his or her sex, and all names must be approved by the office of vital statistics(人口統(tǒng)計) in the area in which the child was born.

Iceland

The country’s naming committee consults the National Register of Persons to determine if a name is acceptable. If parents prefer a name which is not on the list, they must apply for approval and pay a fee, and the name must contain only letters in the Icelandic alphabet.

New Zealand

The country’s Births, Deaths, and Marriages Registration Act of 1995 doesn’t allow parents to choose a name that “might cause offense to a reasonable person; is unreasonably long; or is, includes, or is similar to an official title or rank,” including, apparently, Adolf Hitler and Yeah Detroit—both names recently rejected.

Denmark

If Danish parents prefer a name not on the list of 7,000 preapproved baby names, they must get permission from local church and government officials. 15 to 20 percent of the 1,100 reviewed names—including creative spellings of common names, last names as first names, and unusual names—are rejected each year.

Not all bodies of water are so evidently alive as the Atlantic Ocean, an S-shaped body of water covering 33 million square miles. The Atlantic Ocean, in a sense, replaced the Mediterranean as the inland sea of Western civilization. Unlike real inland seas, which seem strangely still, the Atlantic Ocean is rich in oceanic liveliness all the time. It is perhaps not surprising that its vitality has been much written about by ancient poets.

“Storm at Sea”, a short poem written around 700, is generally regarded as one of mankind’s earliest artistic representations of the Atlantic Ocean.

When the wind is from the west

All the waves that cannot rest

To the east must thunder on

Where the bright tree of the sun

Is rooted in the ocean’s breast.

As the poem suggests, the Atlantic Ocean is never dead and dull. It is an ocean that moves, impressively and endlessly. It makes all kinds of noise---it is forever thundering, boiling, crashing and whistling.

It is easy to imagine the Atlantic Ocean trying to draw breath----perhaps not so noticeably out in mid-ocean, but where it meets land, its waters bathing up and down a sandy beach. It imitates nearly perfectly the steady breathing of a living creature. It is filled with co-living existences, too: unimaginable quantities of creatures, little and large alike, mix within its depths in a kind of oceanic harmony, giving to the waters a feeling of heartbeat, a kind of sub-ocean vitality. And it has a psychology. It has personalities: sometimes peaceful and pleasant, on rare occasions rough and wild; always it is strong and striking.

1.Unlike real inland seas, the Atlantic Ocean is __________.

A. always energetic

B. lacking in liveliness

C. shaped like a square

D. favored by ancient poets.

2.The writer uses the poem “Storm at Sea” for the purpose of ___________.

A. describing the movement of the waves

B. showing the strength of the storm

C. presenting the power of the ocean

D. proving the vastness of the sea

3.In the last paragraph, the Atlantic Ocean is compared to ___________.

A. a beautiful and poetic place

B. a person of blood and flesh

C. a world of interest and wonder

D. a lovely animal

Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis was one of the most private women in the world, yet when she went to work as an editor in the last two decades of her life, she revealed(展現(xiàn))herself as she did nowhere else.

After the death of her second husband, Greek shipping magnate(巨頭)Aristotle Onassis, Jacqueline’s close friend and former White House social secretary Letitia Baldrige made a suggestion that she consider a career in publishing. After consideration, Jacqueline accepted it. Perhaps she hoped to find there some idea about how to live her own life. She became not less but more interested in reading. For the last 20 years of her life, Jacqueline worked as a publisher’s editor, first at Viking, then at Doubleday, pursuing(追求)a late-life career longer than her two marriages combined. During her time in publishing, she was responsible for managing and editing more than 100 successfully marketed books. Among the first books were In the Russian Style and Inventive Paris Clothes. She also succeeded in persuading TV hosts Bill Moyer’s and Jose Campbell to transform their popular television conversations into a book, The Power of Myth. The book went on to become an international best-seller. She dealt, too, with Michael Jackson as he prepared his autobiography(自傳), Moonwalk.

Jacqueline may have been hired for name and for her social relations, but she soon proved her worth. Her choices, suggestions and widespread social relations were of benefit both to the publishing firms and to Jacqueline herself. In the books she selected for publication, she built on a lifetime of spending time by herself as a reader and left a record of the growth of her mind. Her books are the autobiography she never wrote. Her role as First Lady, in the end, was overshadowed by her performance as an editor. However, few knew that she had achieved so much.

1.We can learn from the passage that Jacqueline _________

A. became fond of reading after working as an editor

B. was in charge of publishing 100 books

C. promoted her books through social relations

D. gained a lot from her career as an editor

2.The underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably means that_________

A. Jacqueline was more successful as an editor than as First Lady

B. Jacqueline’s life as First Lady was more colorful than as an editor

C. Jacqueline ended up as an editor rather as First Lady

D. Jacqueline’s role as First Lady was more brilliant than as an editor

3.What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Jacqueline’s two marriages lasted more than 20 years

B. Jacqueline’s views and beliefs were reflected in the books she edited

C. Jacqueline’s own publishing firm was set up eventually

D. Jacqueline’s achievements were widely known.

4.The passage is mainly______________

A. a brief account of Jacqueline’s career as an editor in her last 20 years

B. a brief description of Jacqueline’s lifelong experiences

C. an introduction of Jacqueline’s life both as First Lady and as an editor

D. an analysis of Jacqueline’s social relations in publishing
