When I was a boy, I belonged to the Boy Scouts(童子軍),so I used to go camping every summer, and once something happened which I have never been able to explain.
We were camping in a place above a river. After arriving, we all rushed down to the river and had a swim. Standing by the river, we noticed that it was surrounded by cliffs (懸崖).If someone wanted to reach the river at this point, he had to walk past our camp.
Several days later, the scoutmaster had to be away for a day. That afternoon, we had supper early. We were sitting round the fire, eating and talking, when a man walked past and went down towards the river. We all felt that this man looked very strange, but, because each of us was afraid of looking very stupid, no one said anything.
We ate rather slowly, taking as long as possible. After finishing, we collected our plates together so that we could take them to the river where we always washed them. But no one moved towards the river, we stood looking at each other ashamed. Then all shouting at once, we began talking about the man who had walked past us. We agreed how strange he looked and we wondered what he could be doing by the river. We knew that he could only return by passing through our camp.
An hour passed. Then one of the boys suggested we should creep(悄悄移動)down by the river so that we could see what the man was doing. Moving very slowly and keeping in the shadow, we crept down towards the bank. One boy climbed a tree so that he could see everything clearly. He called to us that there was no one there, so we ran down to the bank, looking everywhere carefully. We could not understand where the man had gone.
When it got dark, we went back to our camp feeling bewildered. We told the scoutmaster what had happened in the evening. Smiling, he doubted that we had seen the man, but finally suggested we go and look again. We did, but there was no one there.
Many years have passed, but I still remember it as if it were yesterday. What did we see? I do not know.

The gray-haired lady can’t wait to leave the building to search for her dad .Unless watched ,she will walk in the streets in an effort to find her father ,who died 30years ago.
Not all cases of Alzheimer’s disease look like this ,but Alzheimer’s is a serious disease that is said to be the fourth or fifth leading cause of death for people over age 75.
It is said that about three percent of the U.S. population over age 65 have Alzheimer’s .In the early stages ,people may exhibit short term memory loss. Some may experience changes in personality , easy to be angry .As the disease progresses ,patients might lose the ability to move and may be unable to speak or move at all. This progressive disease generally lasts 8 to 10 years before death occurs.
While no one is certain what causes these changes in the brain’s nerve fibers (神經纖維),their effect is certain .Alzheimer’s destroys not only the patients ,but also spouses(配偶),friends and families.
What should you do if you notice progressive memory loss in yourself or a loved one? Have the person examined by a doctor who is a specialist in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.
Though many reasons other than Alzheimer’s disease may cause memory loss ,its
early diagnosis(診斷)and treatment may delay some of the most serious effects.
What feeling will you likely experience should a loved one suffer from Alzheimer’ s disease? A person will often go through the various stages of sadness, shock ,anger ,and so on. If the spouse develops the disease ,you may experience hurt and disappointment when he or she doesn’t remember you are married.
Life for the Alzheimer’s patients and their loved ones will never be the same as the disease progresses ,bringing a deep sorrow ,loss and even anger towards God .No matter what feelings are present ,facing them honestly will serve one better than burying them.

U.S. airlines are seeing a major interruption because of hundreds of flights canceled due to the ash cloud from the Icelandic volcano, but European flight companies will face the biggest losses.
The airline business has been tough: The decline dramatically slowed traffic; February heavy snow forced U.S. airlines to cancel thousands of flights; and now the ashes from the volcano stopped all traffic in and out of northern Europe for days.
"For U.S. flight companies, it'll be a relatively short-term hit," said Michael Boyd, president of Boyd Group International, an aviation (航空學) consulting firm. "We think right now they're down about $80 million in terms of lost income, and they're down domestically about 80,000 passengers that would have been flying domestically but aren't because they can't get here."
Delta announced that volcano-related interruption grounded about 400 flights until Monday at a cost of $20 million in lost revenues. But compare that to the recent snowstorms, when the airline canceled 7,000 flights and lost $65 million in revenue.
The disruption has created uncertainty for customers, but analysts say U.S. airlines won't face as many costs as you might think. They are not flying in extra planes to handle the passengers in trouble because, airline analyst Robert Mann said, companies simply don't have them.
"Airlines run a very lean operation now," Mann said. "So, since there are no spare aircraft or crews, the airlines will attempt to maximize loads on every one of their aircraft that do fly. But it may take days, or in some cases a week or so, to get some of these customers to where they want to go."
46. Which negative consequences mentioned in the passage did the disasters cause?
A. coldness, pollution and airlines’ losses
B. airport damage, pollution and slow traffic
C. passenger delay, coldness and airport damage
D. passenger delay, airlines’ losses and slow traffic
47. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. The fewest airplanes will fly the trapped passengers to their destinations.
B. All the customers are sure to be sent to their destinations in time.
C. The U.S. and U.K. airlines suffered the same losses in the natural disasters.
D. The volcano eruption reduced the traffic to and from northern Europe.
48. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. the troubles that the airlines will face after the ash cloud disappears
B. the measures that the airlines will take to maximize their profit
C. the present situation of the airlines and their plan to deliver the passengers
D. the reasons why the airlines run a fine operation
49. Why will it take a long time for airlines to send the passengers to their different destinations?
A. Because the passengers enjoy staying in airports to talk with one another.
B. Because the airlines don’t have spare planes or employees to serve.
C. Because the airlines don't have enough financial support after the disaster.
D. Because the passengers are asking for full refund from the airlines.
50. The passage is most probably from_______.
A.a novel B.a news report
C.a magazine D.a thesis

Monarch Butterfly (金斑蝶) Profile
Monarch butterflies are known for the unbelievable mass movement that brings millions of them to California and Mexico each winter. North American monarchs are the only butterflies that make such a massive journey-up to 3,000 miles (4,828 kilometers). The butterflies must begin this journey each fall ahead of cold weather, which will kill them if they delay too long.
Monarch butterflies begin life as eggs and hatch as little worms that eat their eggshells and finally, eat the milky plants on which they were placed. When fat worms become juicy, colorful and hairy, they create a hard protective case around themselves as they enter the cocoon stage. They come out as beautifully colored, black-orange-and-white adults. The colorful pattern makes monarchs easy to identify, and the unique pattern warns their enemies that the insects are terribly tasting and poisonous.
Butterflies that come out from cocoon in late summer and early fall are different from those that do so during the longer days and warmer weather of summer. These monarchs are born to fly, and know that they must prepare for their long journey because of the changing Weather. However, only monarchs born in late summer or early fall make the move, and they make only one found trip. By the time next year's winter moving begins, several summer generations wilt have stayed and died. It will be last year's settlers' great grand children that make the trip. Yet somehow these new generations know the way, and follow the same routes their ancestors took-sometimes even returning to the same tree.
Many scientists are concerned about the eastern population of monarchs, which spend the summer east of the Rocky Mountains. This group is occurring in ever smaller numbers, and its survival now is threatened by a series of natural disasters in the Mexican winter grounds and by reduced milkweed plants in their summer home.
1.What will happen to the monarch butterflies if they don't leave in fall?
A.They can't survive the very low temperature, in winter
B.They can't keep their pattern colour in changeable weather
C.They will be blown down by the strong wind in winter
D.They will be separated from each other by the cold weather
2.Form the passage we can learn that Monarchs ____________.
A.feed on their own eggs instead of milky plants
B.experience three life stages before they can fly
C.are difficult to be picked out from other insects
D.are very delicious, though they are poisonous
3.Which of the following about Monarchs is TRUE?
A.Monarchs seem to know their ancestor's hometown
B.Only last year's settlers' grandchildren make the trip
C.All the summer generations will have stayed and died
D.Only monarchs born in early autumn make the move
4.The writer seems about the present survival situation of Monarchs.
