Some students believe that whether they have much money or large possessions, they will be happy. They believe that they will be able to do anything they wanted to do if they have money. Some students think that they should be good health, and enjoy whatever they like. Many students wish to have much wealth from their parents. In this way, they don’t have to work hardly and they can own everything. I don’t quite agree on the above points. I don’t think money means happy. We cannot buy much things with money, such as health, happiness and knowledge. I value knowledge, it makes me happy, for I can do a lot of for mankind with knowledge. Although different people value happiness differently, me wealth of happiness is in my study.

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從下框的A-F選項中選出能概括每一段主題的最佳選項。選項中有一項為多余項。
A. Gift giving proven to be valuable
B. Memories from gift giving
C. Moments and events for gift giving
D. Various functions of gift giving
E. Gift giving as a wasteful practice
F. Gift giving as a two-way social activity
Gift Giving
小題1:
There are many occasions(場合)for giving gifts in modern industrialized societies: birthdays, naming ceremonies, weddings, anniversaries, New Year. It is common to give gifts on many of these celebrations in western cultures. In addition, special events, such as one’s first day of school or graduation from university, often require gift giving.
小題2:
What is happening when we give gifts? Most important, we are exchanging gifts. If someone gives me a gift for my birthday, I know that I am usually expected to give one on his or her next birthday. A gift builds up or confirms a social obligation(義務).
小題3:
Gifts tighten personal relationships and provide a means of communication between loved ones. People say that a gift lets the recipient(接受者)know we are thinking of them, and that we want to make the person “feel special.” We want people to feel wanted, to feel part of our social or family group. We give presents to say “I’m sorry.” Sometimes it is difficult for us to find a present that someone will like. Sometimes we give things that we like or would feel comfortable with. In all these cases, the gifts are sending out messages—often very expressive ones.
小題4:
People tend to talk about presents in a fairly loving way. A woman whose mother had died years ago described the many gifts around her house. These were gifts that her mother had given her over the years: “I appreciate these, and they mean something to me,” the woman said, “because I remember the occasions they were given on, and that they were from my mother, and the relationship we’ve had.” The gifts remain and keep the relationship alive in mind. This woman felt the same way about the gifts she gave to others. She hoped that the recipients would look at her gifts in years to come and remember her.
小題5:
Emotions (情感) like these suggest that a positive spirit still lies behind gift giving. They prove that the anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss was wrong to say that modern western gift giving is highly wasteful. Studies in Canada and elsewhere have also shown that this is not the case. Each gift is unique even if so many are given. The emotional benefit for those who exchange gifts is the very reason for the tradition to continue.

Some Americans judge success on the length of his vacations. The man who gets a month’s vacation each year consider himself more successful than the man gets two weeks. Many people want to be teachers because it are teachers who can get three-month vacation every year. Some college teachers who teach the three classes consider themselves less successful than that who teach only one or two, or none in all. In short, the less work Americans do, the less successful they consider themselves.

Question: I have been learning English for about 7 years.    小題1:   And I still can’t make myself understood in English. However, I love learning English. How can I learn English well? Please help me.
Answer: Many people have asked me this question.    小題2:   Here I will give you several tips for learning English.
   小題3:
First of all, you must want to learn. If you are not interested in learning English, no class will help you and no book will help you. So you have to be honest with yourself. Ask yourself, “Do I really want to learn English?” If you can’t answer “yes” to this question, it is better for you to set English aside until you’re ready and willing to learn.
● Set goals (目標).
To learn English well, you must set some goals.    小題4:   It will also help you to see your progress. Ask yourself, “What are my goals? What areas would I like to improve?” Think about what your goals are, and review once in a while to see that you are making progress toward your goals.
● Practice, practice, and practice.
After you have set your goals, you have a better idea of what you need to practice. Just like the athlete whose goal is the Olympics must train daily, you as a language learner must practice language every day to make progress toward your goal.    小題5:
A.Want to learn.
B.I think it is not easy to learn it well.
C.Make friends with some Americans online.
D.Reading is a very good way to learn new words.
E. The answers are as different as the people asking the question.
F. The more you practice, the more progress you will make.
G. Having goals will help you remember what areas you want to work on.

Reading Better and Faster
For most people, it is easy to learn to read faster. Your reading rate is often just a matter of habit.    小題1:
Preview a passage before you actually sit down and read words. You can look over the title of the passage, look at all the headings and subheadings, and look at any pictures or illustrations, charts or graphs.    小題2:   If you have a general idea of what the passage is about before you really read it, you will be able to understand and remember the passage better.
Read in a “questioning” manner—as if you were searching for something.    小題3:   For example, if the heading of a section in the passage is “The causes of the Civil War”, take that title and switch it into a question like: “What are the causes of the Civil?” Now you have a goal; something to look for; something to find out. When you are goal-oriented, you are more likely to reach the goal. At least you’ 11 remember one thing about the passage which you have just read.
Read in thought groups. Studies have shown that when we read, our eyes must make small stops along the line.    小題4:   Not only does this slow you down, but it inhibits comprehension because meaning is easier to pull from groups of words rather than from individual words or even single letters. Try to read in phrases of three or four words, especially in complete clauses and prepositional phrases. Your mind may internalize them as if the whole phrase is like one big meaning-rich word.
小題5:   Poor readers always read at the same slow rate. An efficient reader speeds up for easier material and slow down for the hard. Some things were not meant to be read quickly at all. Legal materials and very difficult texts should be read slowly. Easier materials and magazines and newspapers can be read quickly. Poetry and plays were meant to be performed, and if not acted out, then at least, spoken out loud orally.
A.Poor readers make many more fixations than good readers.
B.You may need to try to change some habits and try some tips.
C.Vary your reading rate to suit the difficulty and type of writing of the text.K]
D.Poor readers habitually read and reread the same phrase over and over again.
E. If you do the preview correctly, you should have some very good general ideas.
F. There are some simple methods that you can use to pay better attention to your text.
G. It sometimes helps if you take the heading or title of a chapter and turn it into a question.
