On 29 May last year, I was doing my swim training for a half Ironman race in the bay near my home.
I was finishing my first loop (圈) when I felt jaws coming around my body and a sharp pain. The water was dark, so I couldn’t see anything. It just came out of nowhere and then it was gone in a flash. I knew it was something really big and assumed it was a shark. I panicked, but knew I needed to get out of the water. I was kicking wildly in case it came back. There was a lifeguard boat close by, so I waved my arms in the air and screamed for help. It got to me within 20 seconds. At that point I didn’t feel anything; adrenaline (腎上腺素) had taken over. The lifeguards held me under the arms and pulled me up out of the water. Then the pain kicked in and it was pretty hard to bear. Some muscle had been bitten off my right arm. I felt a lot of warm, gushing blood.
My chest felt heavy, as if someone had put their foot on it, and I was having trouble breathing. It was extremely painful. When I got to the hospital, I told the nurses to put me to sleep because of the pain. I just wanted them to fix me.
I woke up after surgery four hours later. My doctor was amazed when I managed to move my fingers: the bite just missed a major nerve. My right lung had been damaged; I had several broken bones and a nerve in my leg was cut, so I have reduced feeling at the top of my leg. The shark also bit through my upper back muscle.
Local experts determined that the shark was probably 9-10 feet long. It was young, about seven years old. It just attacked me, left and didn’t come back because it figured I wasn’t food.
1.The writer mentions Adrenaline in Paragraph 2 to ________.
A. explain why she didn’t feel pain at that time
B. offer a possible reason the shark attacked her
C. show how dangerous the situation was then
D. describe the suffering a shark bite could cause
2.The writer of the text can be best described as ________.
A. grateful B. confident
C. tough D. aggressive
3.Which of the following might be the best title for the text?

C. A Race against Time
D. No Panic over Sharks at Sea

Most people say that they do not usually feel confident. But exciting things can happen when we actually believe in ourselves. Here is a man who believed in his own ability even as a boy, and that confidence helped shape his adult life.
At the turn of the last century, a young boy quit school to help with the family expenses. When he was fifteen, he became interested in automobiles(汽車) and worked in a garage. He subscribed to a correspondence course on automobiles and, after a long day in the garage, studied at the kitchen table in the lamplight.
When he felt ready, he walked into the Frayer-Miller Automobile Company of Columbus, Ohio. When Mr. Frayer noticed him, he asked, “Well, what do you want?”
“I just thought I’d tell you I’m coming to work here tomorrow morning,” the boy replied.
“Oh! Who hired you?”
“Nobody yet, but I’ll be on the job in the morning. If I’m not worth anything, you can fire me.”
Early the next morning the boy returned to the plant. Noticing the floor was thick with metal shavings and accumulated dirt, the boy got a broom and set out to clean the place.
Because of his self-confidence and work ethic, the boy’s future was predictable. He went on to stand out in many fields, including automobile racing, piloting World War I planes and founding one of America’s largest airline companies ---- Eastern Airlines.
People who become more confident habitually encourage themselves. Without confidence, we are not likely to move far in the direction of our dreams. It is important that we always believe in ourselves. In order to reach victory, we must believe in ourselves even when we make mistakes
1.How did the boy learn knowledge concerning automobiles?
A. He attended school in the daytime.
B. He studied hard at home.
C. He read books in the garage where he worked.
D. He turned to some instructors for help.
2.We can learn from the boy’s words that _____.
A. he wanted to show off his competence

D. he believed in himself
3.Due to his efforts and confidence, the boy _____.
A. made World War I planes

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track your performance on your phone.
The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection.
The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a doctor actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.
The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications(應(yīng)用) on your phone, so developers could, for example, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters(怪物) among your teeth. “We try to make it smart but also fun,” Serval says.
Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes,” but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.
The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, for $99 to $199, depending on features. The U.S. is the first target market.
Serval says that one day, it’ll be possible to replace the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.
1.Which is one of the features of the Kolibree toothbrush?
A. It can sense how users brush their teeth.
B. It can track users’ school performance.
C. It can cause users’ fear of seeing a doctor.
D. It can help users find their phones.
2.What can we learn from Serval’s words in Paragraph 3?
A. You will find it enjoyable to see a doctor.
B. You should see your doctor on a day-to-day basis.
C. You can brush with the Kolibree as if guided by a doctor.
D. You’d like a doctor to watch you brush your teeth every day.
3.What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. How Serval found out his kids lied to him.
B. Why Serval thought brushing teeth was necessary.
C. How Serval taught his kids to brush their teeth.
D. What inspired Serval to invent the toothbrush.
4.What can we learn about the future development of the Kolibree?
A. The brush handle will be removed.
B. A mobile phone will be built into it.
C. It will be used to fill holes in teeth.
D. It will be able to check users’ teeth.

Wilkie Collins was born in London in 1824 and his first novel -- a historical romance called“Anatonia” -- was published when he was 26. Shortly after this he met Charles Dickens, and they formed a close friendship that lasted for ten years and influenced both men's writing. Collins went on to publish 25 novels as well as many short stories, plays and works of non-fiction. However, he is most well known for the two mystery novels “The Woman in White” and “The Moonstone”.
Collins published both mysteries as serials in All the Year Round. When it appeared in the magazine in 1860, “The Woman in White” was so popular that it became the subject of a song and a play. It even influenced fashion, and many women started to dress in white. Eight years later “The Moonstone” was published and earned Collins the title "the father of the modern English detective novel". T S Elliot, another famous writer, said that The Moonstone was the "first and greatest of English detective novels", and it is still admired by modern crime writers today.
An author of many mysteries, Dorothy L Sayers considered “The Moonstone” to be "probably the finest detective story ever written", and many people agree with her. There are several reasons why they think so. One is that Collins uses different characters to tell each section of the story. The characters have very different personalities and voices, which are interesting and often amusing. There are also several features of the plot which started trends in mystery writing. For example, many detective stories are set in a country house, where the theft must have been committed by one of the people in the house. The character of a famous detective with an unusual appearance and habits occurs in many books, and an innocent person is often under suspicion at first. A number of modern films have also used the idea of a cursed jewel stolen from a religious statue. And of course, in The Moonstone and most other good mystery novels, the person who at first seems the least likely to be the criminal turns out to be guilty.
1.Anatonia was published in ________.
A. 1824 B. 1850
C. 1860 D. 1868
2.All the Year Round was a title of ____.
A. one of Wilkie Collins’ books B. one of Charles Dickens’ books
C. a story of a magazine D. a magazine
3.Collins is known as the father of the modern English detective novel because_______.
A. he was older than the other detective story writers.
B. his son was also a famous detective story writer.
C. many aspects of his writing are copied by other detective story writers.
D. the Moonstone is the most popular detective story.

A Dream Realized
Zhao Yang, 33, an employee of a French company in Beijing, who has traveled extensively in the United States by motorbike.
I have been addicted to Harley-Davidson motorcycles since I was young, and knowing that motorcycle-related culture is very popular in the US, I decided to take a trip. Along with my wife and a group of fellow enthusiasts, I participated in a 15-day tour in October last year. We had one free day, so I headed to Las Vegas.
Before arriving in the US, I researched a range of materials about riding a motorbike there. I also found some classic recommended routes on Chinese websites related to Harley Davidson clubs.
With the help of their suggestions, I designed my own route.
In accordance with the rules, before I left China I visited a notary office (公證機(jī)關(guān)), where my driving license was confirmed as acceptable in the US and my documents were translated into English. Only then did I buy my basic motorcycle equipment.
When we arrived at Las Vegas, we rented a Harley Davidson and rode around the city. It was an exciting, unforgettable experience, because it was not only the achievement of a dream, but I also experienced the regional motorcycle culture in the US. As we parked the bike at the roadside, some drivers rolled down their car windows and gave us the thumbs-up, and when we drove on the road, car drivers pulled over to let us pass. We also visited a motorcycle-themed restaurant for lunch and enjoyed the fantastic decoration and delicious food.
I believe that traveling by motorcycle in the US will become popular because of the recent joint efforts to promote Sino-US tourism, especially after the two countries decided to name 2016 as US-China Tourism Year. This new style of traveling will attract more young Chinese tourists, and people like me, who have a passion for freedom and adventure, will visit the US more frequently. For example, I am planning to travel along the famous highway called Route 66 with friends during next year's Spring Festival.
If travel agencies and governments can promote the need for motorcyclists to obtain accurate information before they head to the US - such as the required documents, how to rent a motorbike and local traffic laws - "riding the range" will become a safe and great way to spend a vacation.
1.Zhao Yang’s childhood dream was to ______.
A. become a professional motorcyclist
B. travel in Harley-Davidson motorcycles
C. take a trip in the USA along with his wife
D. travel to work on a fashionable motorcycle
2.To prepare for the motorcycle trip in the USA, Zhao Yang ______.
A. made various research and checked his driving license
B. took the suggestions given and chose the classic route
C. joined one of the Harley Davidson clubs and got suggestions
D. took lots of health examinations and bought some equipment
3.How did Zhao Yang feel when driving in Las Vegas?
A. disturbed B. disappointed
C. depressed D. excited
4.Zhao Yang thinks that traveling by motorcycle in the US will ______.
A. enjoy much popularity with Sino-US tourism
B. obtain less American fans in motorcycle travel
C. get less support from the modern motorcyclists
D. meet more challenge with the information gap

If you are a motivated person, it is easy to put your personal goals ahead of those of the people around you. It is natural and not necessarily a bad thing. However, it is crucial t learn to be a team player. Acting as a part of a team builds character, teacher empathy (共鳴), and eventually achieves goals.1.Here’s why:
Group Effort Is More Effective than Individual Effort. You can run a small business pretty independently, but if you ever plan on being employed or running a business that employs others, you’ll have to learn how to work with other people.2.
Improving Others Equals Improving Yourself. If you’re on a team, your personal success helps make you a good team player. This is because most people are at least a little bit competitive, whether they admit it or not. When you do well, you set a standard that others will want to meet. By pushing yourself, you help push the people on your team.3.When you see someone you’re working with do something better than you, more often than not, you’ll push yourself to meet that standard.
Your Attitude Matters4. People respect the ability to work well with others more than anything. Your individual actions have an impact, but if you’re reluctant to do something to help your team, it’ll be evident and your contribution will be less appreciated. Having a genuine interest in your team helps you as well as those you’re working with.
5.As much as your work is important and necessary to the success of your team, the success of your team is important and necessary to your success.
