A few days ago I asked my sons’ governess(女家庭教師)Julia to come into my study. “Be seated, Julia, ”I said, “Let’s settle our accounts. I guess you most likely need some money, but maybe you’re too polite to mention it. Now then, we agreed on thirty dollars a month...”
“Forty.”
“No, thirty. I made a note of it. I always pay our governess thirty. Well, um, you’ve been here two months, so...”
“Two months and five days.”
“Exactly two months. I made a special note of it. That means you have sixty dollars coming to you. Take off nine Sundays... you know you didn’t work with Tom on Sundays, you only took walks. And three holidays... ”Julia was biting her finger nail nervously, her face red, but - not a word.
“Three holidays, therefore take off twelve dollars. Four days Tom was sick and there were no lessons, as you were occupied only with Dick. Three days you had a toothache and my wife gave you permission not to work after lunch. Twelve and seven - nineteen. Take nineteen off ... that leaves. hmm.... forty one dollars. Correct?”
Julia’s left eye reddened with tears welling up. Her chin trembled; she coughed nervously and blew her nose, but - still not a word.
“Around New Year’s Day you broke a teacup and a saucer; take off two dollars. The cup cost more, it was a treasure of the family, but- forget it. When didn’t I take a loss! Then, due to your neglect (疏忽), Tom climbed a tree and tore his jacket; take away ten. Also due to your carelessness the maid stole Dick’s shoes. You ought to watch everything! You get paid for it. So, that means five more dollars off. The tenth of January I gave ten dollars.”
“You didn’t. ”sobbed Julia.
“But I made a note of it.”
“Well... if you say so.”
“Take twenty seven from forty one -that leaves fourteen.”
Both her eyes were filled with tears. Beads of sweat stood on the thin pretty little nose. Poor girl!
“Only once was I given any money,” she whispered, her voice trembling, “and that was by your wife. Three dollars, nothing more.”
“Really? You see now, and I didn’t know that! Take three from fourteen.. leaves eleven. Here’s your money, my dear. Three, three, three, one and one. Here it is !”
I handed her eleven dollars. She took them and pocketed them.
“Merci (法語: 謝謝),”she whispered.
I jumped to my feet and started pacing the room. I was overcome with anger. “For what, this - ‘merci’?” I asked.
“For the money. ”
“But you know I’ve cheated you - robbed you ! I have actually stolen from you ! Why this‘merci’?”
“In my other places they didn’t give me anything at all.”
“They didn’t give you anything? No wonder! I played a little joke on you, a cruel lesson, just to teach you... I m going to give you all the eighty dollars! Here they are in the envelope all ready for you... Is it really possible to be so spineless (懦弱)?Why didn’t you protest? Why were you silent? Is it possible in this world to be without teeth and claws(爪)—to be such a fool?”
Embarrassed, she smiled. And I could read her expression,“It is possible.”
I asked her pardon for the cruel lesson and, to her great surprise, gave her the eighty dollars. She murmured her little“merci”several times and went out. I looked after her and thought,“How easy it is to crush the weak in this world !”

Until men invented ways of staying underwater for more than a few minutes, the wonders of the world below the sea were almost unknown. And to make full use of the rich natural resources(資源)underwater was quite impossible. How could air be supplied to divers below the surface(表面)of the sea? There were pictures in the past showing men swimming under the surface with air bags tied to their bodies.A pipe from the bag carried air into the swimmer's mouth. But little progress was made in the invention of diving devices(潛水設(shè)備)until 1490,when the famous Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci(萊昂納多·達(dá)芬奇)designed a complete diving suit.
In 1819 a German, called Siebe developed a way of forcing air into the head covering by a machine operated above the water. Finally,in 1837 he invented the“hard-hat suit” which was used for almost a century. It had a metal covering for the head and an air pipe attached(連接)to a machine above the water. It also had small openings to remove unwanted air.But there were two dangers to the hard-hat suit. One was a sudden rise to the surface, caused by too great a supply of air.The other was the crushing(擠壓)of the body, caused by a sudden dive into deep water.
1.The passage is mainly about ________.
[ ]
A.how to invent diving devices
B.how to develop a way of diving
C.how to design a diving suit
D.the development of diving devices
2.It was dangerous for the diver in a hard-hat suit if ________.
[ ]
A.the air pipe was long
B.the openings removed unwanted air
C.he dived into deep water
D.the machine suddenly supplied too much air
3.Why did people try to invent good equipment for diving?
[ ]
A.To make better use of the natural resources under water

Tristan da Cunha, a 38-square-mile island, is the farthest inhabited island in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records. It is 1510 miles southwest of its nearest neighbor. St. Helena, and 1950 miles west of Africa. Discovered by the Portuguese admiral(葡萄牙海軍上將) of the same name in 1506, and settled in 1810, the island belongs to Great Britain and has a population of a few hundred.
Coming in a close second--and often wrongly mentioned as the most distant land---is Easter Island, which lies 1260 miles east of its nearest neighbor, Pitcairn Island, and 2300 miles west of South America.
The mountainous 64-square-mile island was settled around the 5th century, supposedly by people who were lost at sea. They had no connection with the outside world for more than a thousand years, giving them plenty of time to build more than 1000 huge stone figures, called moai, for which the island is most famous.
On Easter Sunday, 1722, however, settlers from Holland moved in and gave the island its name. Today, 2000 people live on the Chilean territory(智利領(lǐng)土). They share one street, a small airport, and a few hours of television per day.
1.It can be learnt from the text that the island of Tristan da Cunha _____.
[ ]

A few years ago it was popular to speak of a generation gap, a disagreement between young people and their elders. Parents said that children did not show them proper respect and obedience (服從), while children complained (抱怨) that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared? Actually the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many people argue that a gap is built into the fabric (結(jié)構(gòu)) of our society.
One important cause of the generation gap is the chance that young people have to choose their own ways of life. In more traditional societies, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and agree to, and to continue the family occupation (職業(yè)). In our society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move out of the family home at an early age, marry or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose occupations different from those of their parents.
In our easily changing society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did: to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the strong desire that parents have for their children are another cause of the disagreement between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.
Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities.
No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a feature (特點) of American life for some time to come. Its causes are rooted in the freedom and changes of our society, and in the rapid speed at which society changes.

B. stay with their parents in order to get a chance for higher education
C. seek the best advice from their parents
D. have very little in common with their parents

A. Parents should be strict with their children.
B. The younger generation should value the older generation for their wisdom.
