In the far north-eastern corner of South Africa, Kruger National Park is the largest
game reserve (野生動植物保護區(qū)) in the country, and the most famous wildlife zone
on the African continent. Stretching out over 7,332 square miles, Kruger is a wonderland
of wildlife. It has 507 species of birds and 147 species of mammals. It also has a fair bit
of history  it dates back to 1898 when it was founded as a game reserve in an attempt to
control hunting in the area. It didn't see a tourist until 1927; however, one year later it
became a national park.
It's a good place to see roaring beasts in their own backyards. South Mrica is an
increasingly hot tourist spot, and you may want to visit it this year, before it hosts the
2010 football World Cup. South Africa is also an inexpensive country for tourists.
Anyone seeking to escape the European winter will be surprised to hear that March
is not the best time to go to Kruger.
The six-month period between May and October tends to be the most suitable time
for wildlife - spotting. The weather is not only cooler but also considerably drier. This
means that water sources dry up and animals are forced to approach rivers, creeks, dams
and watering holes in search of liquid refreshment.
If you go to South Africa, you need to pay attention to the threat of malaria (瘧疾).
Kruger is one of the only two South African national parks that have an issue about the
disease, but only during the rainy season ( December to April).
A disadvantage of Kruger is that it sits a long way from South Africa's other well-known
tourist attractions  Cape Town, the Garden Route, and the meeting of the Atlantic and Indian
Oceans at Cape Agulhas.

China_is_going_green. In order to reduce air pollution and oilshortages, automobile manufacturers
have announced their plans to develop hybrid vehicles (混合燃料汽車) for the Chinese market.
Toyota's hybrid car Prius will be ready to drive in China this week. Let's have a look at the new car.
Any vehicle is a hybrid when it combines two or more sources of power. Hybrid cars run off a
rechargeable battery and gasoline. Hybrid cars have special engines, which are smaller than traditional
gasoline engines. They run at 99 percent of their power when the car is cruising (勻速行駛). A specially
designed battery motor provides extra power for running up hills or when extra acceleration is needed.
Step into a Prius, and turn on the engine. The first thing you notice is how much quieter it is than a
traditional car. At this point, the car's gasoline engine is dormant (休眠). The electric motor will provide
power until the car reaches about 24 km/h. If you stay at a low speed, you are effectively driving an
electric car, with no gasoline being used, and no waste gas gives off.
The onboard(車載的) computer makes the decision about when to use a gas engine, when to go
electric, and when to use a combination of the two. If you go over 24 km/h, when you step on the gas
pedal (油門), you are actually telling the computer how fast you want to go.
The electronic motor recharges automatically using a set of batteries. When driving at high speed, the
gasoline engine not only powers the car, but also charges the batteries. Any time you use the brake, the
electric motor in the wheels will work like a generator and produce electricity to recharge the batteries.
As a consequence, the car's batteries will last for around 200,000 miles.

1. The author writes this passage mainly to________.
A. teach people how to drive a hybrid car
B. introduce a new kind of "green" car
C. show how to save their gasoline when driving a car
D. announce plans to develop hybrid vehicles for China

2. The first sentence probably refers to ________.
A. there will be more and more green land in China
B. China is still young and lacking experience
C. China's new cars are combinations of different green models
D. China has started producing environmentally friendly cars

3. Which of the followings is NOT true?
A. The hybrid cars reduce air pollution and oilshortages.
B. The car's gasoline engine doesn't work until it reaches about 24 km/h.
C. This kind of car is completely controlled by an onboard computer.
D. A specially designed battery motor provides extra power when needed.

4. What is the most important feature of hybrid cars?
A. They are powered by both a rechargeable battery and gasoline.
B. They are much quieter than traditional cars.
C. They only use 99 percent of their power to run up hills.
D. They have smaller engines than traditional gasoline ones.

5. What can we conclude from the story?
A. The batteries can be recharged at any time you want.
B. Using the brake suggests that the gasoline engine should work.
C. The batteries will last for 200, 000 miles without being recharged.
D. The gasoline engine charges the batteries as well as powers the car.

Depression(抑郁癥) is a serious problem today. Depression causes workers to be unpro- ductive,
causing companies and countries to lose billions of dollars. One expert says that de- pression is like cancer
because it is "widespread, costly and deadly". Depression hits one per- son in five around the world.
Although people have believed depression to be a problem among the rich and educated, studies show
that depression is a problem among everyone. Over any six-month period, be- tween five to seven percent
of the world's 15opulation will be suffering from a serious depres- sion.
Suicide rates among people suffering from the disease in its extreme, or clinical form were 80 percent
higher than in the population at large, and sufferers were four times more likely to have heart attacks.
People who suffer from depression often have problems sleeping, getting up on time, and doing work
unproductively.
Depression, which researchers agree, has its origin in the genes, brings loss of confi- dence and ability
to concentrate   making it impossible for employees and managers to work efficiently.
Depression is made more serious in China by Chinese inability to face it. Many people believe that
depressed people are either weak or lazy. Besides, there is no good treatment, with few specialists
available.
"Most patients in China just don't get help," a Chinese doctor says. "In my hospital, I have to see 30 or
40 patients in a morning, just have time to say ' Hello, how do you feel?'"
In Western countries, people are not afraid to admit that they have depression, but most do not tell it to
their boss, because they fear that their boss would fire them.
"In my experience, aging bosses are the most willing to admit they have it, because they feel the most

Compared to people with bad attitudes , people who are cheerful and relaxed are less
likely to suffer from colds, according to a new study. " It'spossiblethatbeingupbeathelpsthe
bodyfight illnesses", says Sheldon Cohen, the study's lead researcher from Camegie Mellon
University( CMU) in Pittsburgh.
In a previous study,Cohen and his colleagues put cold-causing viruses into the noses
of 334 healthy adults. People who tended to be cheerful and lively were least likely to
develop sniffles, coughs , and other cold symptoms. People who showed positive feelings
were also less likely to mention symptoms to their doctors , even whenmedical tests
detected those symptoms.
Those findings were interesting, but they didn't prove that a person's attitude affects
whether he or she gets sick. Instead,it was still possible that a person's underlying
personality is what matters.Evidence suggests, for instance, that certain people are
naturally more likely to be outgoing and optimistic , with high self-esteem and a sense
of control over life. This would mean that who we are, not how we feel, ultimately
decides our chances of catching colds.
To figure out which mattered more ( personality or emotions) , the CMU team
interviewed 193 healthy adults. The researchers talked to each person over the phone
every evening for 2 weeks. At the end of the interviewing period, people got nose drops
that contained either cold or flu viruses. Then, each person stayed in an isolated room
for 5 0r 6 days. The results showed that everyone in the study was equally likely to get
infected. Their symptoms, however, differed depending on the types of emotions that
they had reported over the previous 2 weeks. Among those who reported good moods
and had been infected with the flu virus, for example,28 percent developed coughs and
stuffy noses. On the other hand, those symptoms struck 41 percent of people who had
been less upbeat.

A. didn't catch colds as often
B. developed cold symptoms more slowly
C. were less likely to have cold symptoms detected
D. were less likely to feel cold symptoms

We produce 500 billion of plastic bags in a year world-wide and they are thrown
away polluting oceans, killing wild-life and getting dumped in landfills where they take
up to 1,000 years to decompose. Researchers have been unsuccessfully looking for a
solution.
The 16-year-old Canadian high school student, Daniel Burd, from Waterloo Collegiate
Institute, has discovered a-way to make plastic bags degrade(降解)in as few as 3months,
a finding that won him first prize at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, a $10,000 prize, a
$20,000 scholarship, and a chance to revolutionize a major environmental issue.
Burd's strategy was simple: Since plastic does eventually degrade, it must be eaten by
microorganisms(微生物). If those microorganisms could be identified, we could put them
to work eating the plastic much faster than under normal conditions.
With this goal in mind, he ground plastic bags into a powder and concocted(調(diào)制)a
solution of household chemicals, yeast(酵母)and tap water to encourage microbes growth.
Then he added the plastic powder and let the microbes work their magic for 3 months. Finally,
he tested the resulting bacterial culture on plastic bags, exposing one plastic sample to dead
bacteria as a control. Sure enough, the plastic exposed(暴露)to the live bacteria was 17%
lighter than the control after six weeks.
The inputs are cheap: maintaining the required temperature takes little energy because microbes
produce heat as they work, and the only outputs are water and tiny levels of carbon dioxide.
"Almost every week I have to do chores and when I open the closet door, I have piles of plastic
bags falling on top of me. One day, I got tired of it and I wanted to know what other people are
doing with these plastic bags. The answer: not much. So I decided to do something myself." said
Daniel Burd.

A.make the live bacteria work better
B.test how effective his method was
C.know which bacteria worked faster
D.control the temperature in the process
3.Maintaining the required temperature takes little energy because ____.

B.microbes can produce heat themselves
C.much carbon dioxide is produced
D.the temperature can be controlled
