                                     B

Is there intelligent (有智力的) life on other planets? For years, scientists said “no” or “we don't know”. But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers (天文學(xué)家) . They believe intelligent life exists (存在) somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact these beings (人;生物) .

Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. “This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life ,” say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. “Tools like the Hubble Telescope (哈勃望遠(yuǎn)鏡) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies ,” says Shostak. “And our galaxy, the Milky Way,has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth."

In the past,it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes (高倍望遠(yuǎn)鏡) allow scientists to discover smaller planets —the size of Mars or Earth一in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.

Have beings from space already visited Earth? “Probably not ,” says Shostak. “It's a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other way, such as radio signals (信號(hào)) .In fact, they rxlay be trying to communicate with us now,but we don't have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025,we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.”

There was once a man called Mr. Flowers, and flowers were his only joy in life. He spent all his free time in one of his four glass-houses and grew flowers of every color, with long and difficult names, for competitions. He tried to grow a rose of a new color to win the silver cup (銀杯) for the Rose of the Year.

Mr. Flowers glass-houses were very near to a middle school. Boys of around thirteen of age were often tempted (引誘) to throw a stone or two at one of Mr. Flowers’ glass-houses. So Mr. Flowers did his best to be in or near his glass-houses at the beginning and end of the school day.

Ⅳ.任務(wù)型閱讀

English people think that the home is a place to protect themselves from the outside world, not one for others to ^see and enjoy. For them, their house is a personal place in which they go to hide away from the troubles of life.

To the Americans, their home is an expression of themselves,a place to show others what kind of people they are. So they would very much like to have viwsitors in their house and see it.

Americans also want their home to be a place where they can have fun and share their lives with their friends. They often have a large entertainment area in their house so that they can watch sports on TV. They also have an outside area for barbecues (烤肉) .

English people,on the other hand, usually spend much more time chatting with friendvS at public places like parks or pubs. Few people would be invited to an Englishman's home. You could work with a person or live next door to someone for years, but you could never see the inside of his home.

If you are invited, that is great. It?s a good idea to bring something to drink or eat, such as a bottle of wine or a box of chocolates. You can do the same thing in an American home, too.

Another rule in both countries is not to show your opinion about their country or its customs. Most people are proud of their country and their way of doing things. So it is best just to listen and smile politely.
