One summer evening I was sitting by the open window reading a good but frightening story. After a time,it became too dark for me to read easily,so I put my book down and got up to turn on the light. Suddenly,I heard a cry for help. The cry seemed to come from the trees at the end of the garden. I looked out,but it was too dark to see anything clearly. A moment later,I heard the cry again.

"Maybe one of the boys of the neighbourhood has climbed a tree and now he can't get down!" I said to myself. I decided that I should go out and have a look in the garden. I took a torch (手電筒)and picked up a walking stick. Then I walked into the garden. Once again I heard the cry. It was clear that it came from the trees at the end of the garden. "Who's there?" I called out as I walked. No one was in sight. I thought that someone was playing a silly trick on me.

I went back to the house. I had just sat down and began to read my book again when I heard the cry again. This time, the cry came from right behind my shoulder. I dropped my book and jumped up. Sitting on the back of the mantelpiece (壁爐臺)was a large green bird. It was a parrot! While I was in the garden, the bird must have seen the light in my room and flown in through the open window.

In Thailand, people spend their New Year's Day in April.

People call the beginning of their New Year "Songkran". The word means "move" or "change place", because it is the day when the sun changes its place. This takes place every year sometime between April 10 and April 18.

The Songkran Festival lasts four days. During the four days, people do cleaning like Chinese. Young people pour water into the hands of their elders and parents to show their love. Of course, they also cook different delicious food and get together to have parades (游行)in the streets.

But there is something different from China. In many parts of Thailand, people have a big water fight in the streets. They throw water on anyone passing by. Everyone takes part in this activity. It is hard to find a dry person walking down the street. And children and adults both have great fun in the water fight. Although they will get wet by the end of the day, they will feel pleasant and relaxed.
