The Leaning Tower of Pisa

I used to dream about Pisa when I was a boy. I read about the famous building called the Leaning Tower of Pisa (比薩斜塔). But when I read the word Pisa, I was thinking of pizza. I thought this tower was a place to buy pizza. It must be the best pizza in the world, I thought.

Many years later I finally saw the Leaning Tower. I knew then that it was Pisa and not pizza. But there was still something special about it for me. The tower got its name because it really does lean to one side. Some people want to try to fix (整修) it. They are afraid it may fall over and they do not like the way it looks.

I do not think it's a good idea to try to fix it. The tower probably (大概) will not fall down. It is 600 years old. Why should anything happen now? And, if you ask me, I like the way it looks. I like the way it leans over the city. To me it is a very human kind of leaning. Nothing is perfect (完美), it seems to say.

And who cares? Why do people want things to be perfect? Imperfect things may be more interesting. Let's take the tower in Pisa. Why is it so famous? There are many other older, more beautiful towers in Italy. But the Pisa Tower is the most famous. People come from all over the world to see it.

1.This passage is about ________.

[ ]

A.Italian pizza

B.Italy's problem

C.how the Leaning Tower of Pisa got its name

D.why the author likes Pisa

2.The writer used to think Pisa was ________.

3.The Leaning Tower of Pisa is ________.

[ ]

A.modern
B.falling down
C.600 years old

4.The writer ________.

B.likes the way the tower looks

C.thinks it's the most beautiful tower in Italy

5.The writer likes the Leaning Tower of Pisa because ________.

[ ]

A.it's old
B.it's perfect
C.it sells pizza
D.it's imperfect

Letter A

  Dear Etty Kit,

My roommate's family want me to have Thanksgiving dinner with them in their home. I accepted (接受) the invitation (邀請), and I'm excited about going, but I'm a little worried about it, too. The social customs (社交習(xí)慣) in my country are very different from here, so I'm a little afraid of making mistakes.

Should I bring a gift, such as candy or flowers? Should I arrive on time or a little late? At the dinner table, how can I know which fork or knife to use? How can I let the family know that I'm thankful for their kindness?

Confused

Letter B

  Dear Confused,

It's a good idea to bring a small gift when you go to a dinner party. Flowers are always nice, or you might bring a bottle of wine if you know that the family drink it.

You should arrive on time or five to ten minutes late. Don't get there early. If you're going to be more than fifteen minutes late, you should call and tell them.

Try to be free at the dinner table. If you don't know about choosing the correct fork, knife, or spoon, just watch the other people, and follow them. If you still have no idea of what to do, don't be shy (害羞) about asking the person next to you. It's better to ask than to be quietly uncomfortable (不安) and nervous (緊張).

If you like the food, say so. Of course, you'll thank the host and hostess for the meal and for their kindness. It's also a good idea to send a card or thank-you note the day after.
