There are plants in North Africa where great cities once stood. There were gardens and trees and grasses. But now these places are like deserts (a large land of sand). Scientists have begun to study this land to find out what happened. Many of them think the land died when the trees were cut down. Trees help other plants grow. Tree roots(根) hold the soil (the top of the earth where plants grow) in place. They keep the soil from blowing away. In forests, leaves on the ground keep rain-water from running off. Trees near farms protect (keep something safe) growing plants from strong winds.
Once there were hundreds of farms in the southwest United States. Then the farms turned into fields of dry land. Trees might have saved these farms. But few trees grow in the dry Southwest. Now we try to save trees. In many forests, when a tree is cut down, a new tree is planted in its place. We do not want the land to die.
The writer wants to tell us that ________.
[ ]
A.farms are better than cities
B.there are no deserts in Africa
C.trees are important to the land
D.trees are quite important to American farms

In the 1930s, a lot of people in the USA were out of work. Among these people was a man named Alfred Butts. He always had an interest in word games and so, to fill his time, he planned a game that he called“Lexico”. However, he was not completely satisfied with the game, so he made a number of changes to it and, in time, changed its name from “Lexico”to“Alph”and then to“Criss Cross”.He wanted to make some money from his new game but he didn't have any real commercial(商業(yè)性的)success.
In 1939, Butts happened to meet a man called Jim Brunot who showed an interest in the new game. The two men worked together on developing the game and in 1948 it was offered for sale in the United States under its new name-“Scrabble”.
At first it didn't sell very well. In the first year it sold just 2250 sets and by 1952 it had only reached 8500 sets a year.
Then, in 1952 the manager of Macy's department store in New York, Jack Strauss, happened to play“Scrabble”while he was on holiday. He thought it was a wonderful game and, when he went back to work after his holiday, he insisted that Macy's should stock(儲(chǔ)備) the game and make an effort(努力) to call the public's attention to it.
As a result,“Scrabble”became a big success in the United States and it soon spread to Australia and then to other English-speaking countries.

All around the world, people drink tea. But tea does not mean the same thing to everyone. In different countries people have very different ideas about drinking tea. In China, for example, tea is always served when people get together. The Chinese drink it at any time of the day at homes or in teahouses. They prefer their tea plain, with nothing else in it. Tea is also important in Japan. The Japanese have a special way of serving tea called a tea ceremony (儀式). It is very old and full of meaning. Everything must be done in a special way in the ceremony. There is even a special room for it in Japanese homes.
Another tea-drink country is England. In England, the late afternoon is“teatime”. Almost everyone has a cup of tea then. The English usually make tea in a teapot and drink it with cream and sugar. They also eat cakes, cookies and little sandwiches at teatime.
In the United States people drink tea mostly for breakfast or after meals. Americans usually use teabags to make their tea. Tea bags are faster and easier than making tea in teapots. In the summer, many Americans drink cold tea-“iced tea”. Sometimes they drink iced tea from cans, like soda.
The passage is about ________.
[ ]
A.Chinese tea
B.why tea is important
C.the teatime in England
D.different ways of tea drinking in different countries

Reading Comprehension
A barn owl(貓頭鷹) silently flies at night through the dark forest. Suddenly, the large bird hears a mouse running through the leaves. The bird quickly changes its flight path, drops down, and scoops up(抓起) the mouse in its talons(猛禽的爪). Another meal has been successfully captured.
How is the barn owl able to pinpoint the location of the mouse in the dark? Credit(把…歸功于) the bird' s excellent hearing and its ability to determine the exact location of the source of a sound.
According to a recent study at Stanford University, a barn owl learned how to pinpoint the location of a sound source when it was only about two weeks old. The owl did this by noting the difference in the time it took a sound to reach each ear and in the difference in the loudness of the sound in each ear.
In another test, three young barn owls were given eyeglasses when their eyes were just beginning to open. The lenses(鏡片) in the glasses distorted(使變形) a scene so that an object an owl was looking at seemed to be 20 degrees to the left of its actual position.
The scientists found that whenever one of the young owls heard a sound, it would look at a spot 20 degrees to the left of the sound source. Thus, the scientists concluded, the owls learned at a very young age how to locate the source of a sound.
1.What is the reason for the barn owl to successfully catch the mouse?
[ ]
A.It has very good eyesight at night.
B.It has very sharp hearing.
C.It is very good at determining the location of the sound.
D.Both B and C.
2.According to a recent study, a barn owl learned how to ________ when it was only about two weeks old.
[ ]

3.What do the words “to pinpoint the location” in the second paragraph mean?
[ ]
A.To find the exact position.
B.To notice the particular smell.
C.To recognize the real shape.
D.To hear the sound clearly.
4.Why did one of the young owls, after hearing a sound, look at a spot 20 degrees left of the sound source?
[ ]
A.It was too young to find the correct spot.
B.It was used to looking at the spot 20 degrees to the left of an object.
C.It was a mistake often made by this young owl.
D.It was wearing eyeglasses which distorted the object.
