Ding-Dong!
“Jason, honey? Can you answer the door?”
“I am busy, mom!” Jason shouted back at his mother. He had spent three hours so far working to this point in the game. He couldn′t stop now.
Ding-Dong!Mom′s footsteps approached the front door.
“ Jason, it′s your friend Todd.” Mom called from the doorway.
Todd, his best friend, stepped into the room. “ Jason!I need a partner for playing basketball.” He sounded excited.
Jason snorted. “No way, Todd. I′m playing a game here.”
Jason gave his friend a dirty look, and his character in the game almost got killed while he looked away, “ I almost died because of you!”
Todd looked at Jason′s mother. Jason′s mother looked back at him. They both looked at Jason. “Why don′t you play basketball with your friend?” Jason′s mother suggested.
“Tomorrow, maybe…” There were more levels to beat tomorrow, though. Maybe he had played tomorrow. He had to see what mood he was in. He thought he heard footsteps walking away, but he was too busy beating the next level to care.
An hour later, Jason′s father came home. It was dinner time after his father washed up and sat down. Jason didn′t even hear his name being called to the table. He didn′t hear his father walk at behind him and ask him to turn the game off, either.
When the screen suddenly went black and his father′s angry face loomed in front of him, Jason finally heard. “No more game for a month.” Jason′s father shouted at him. “You don′t play basketball, you don′t come to dinner, and you don′t do your chores. We′ll make something else done before you play any more.”
Jason nodded slowly. He knew better than to argue with his father, and when he thought about it, he had been playing quite a bit. It was fun, but he was letting down his friends, his family, and himself by paying too much.
He′d try harder in the future.

I’m five years old, and my mother is washing the kitchen floor. I’m telling her about a new girl in school, and she suddenly looks up at me and says, “ Who are your two best friends ? ”
I’m not sure what to say. I’ve been friends with Jill since I was three or so , and I really like Jaime , a friend in kindergarten .
“ Jill and Jaime .”
“ Well , what about Karen and Cindy ?”

Since the 1970s, scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with computers. Braincomputer interface (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines.
Recently, two researchers, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland, demonstrated (展示) a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person’s thoughts.
In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.
“Our brain has billions of nerve cells. These send signals through the spinal cord (脊髓) to the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles.’ Tavella says. “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with external world and also to control devices.”
The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp (頭皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer interprets the signals and commands the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain.
Prof. Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that interprets brain signals and turns them into simple commands. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: communication, and controlling devices. One example is this wheelchair.”
He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to guarantee that they can use the technology over long periods of time.
41. BCI is a technology that can ________.
A. help to update computer systems B. link the human brain with computers
C. help the disabled to recover D. control a person's thoughts
42. How did Tavella operate the wheelchair in the laboratory?
A. By controlling his muscles. B. By talking to the machine.
C. By moving his hand. D. By using his mind.
43. Which of the following shows the path of the signals described in Paragraph 5?
A. scalp→computer→cap→wheelchair B. computer→cap→scalp→wheelchair
C. scalp→cap→computer→wheelchair D. cap→computer→scalp→wheelchair
44. The team will test with real patients to ________.
A. make profits from them B. prove the technology useful to them
C. make them live longer D. learn about their physical condition
45. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Switzerland, the BCI Research Center
B. New Findings about How the Human Brain Works
C. BCI Could Mean More Freedom for the Disabled
D. Robotic Vehicles Could Help to Cure Brain Injuries

Children are natural scientists, very interested in the world around them. Helping them enjoy science can be easy; there’s no need for a lot of scientific terms(科學(xué)術(shù)語)or modern labs. You only have to share your children’s interests.
Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-old children to talk about science as a job. The children asked me “textbook questions” about schooling, the money I got and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, we sat facing each other silently. Finally I said, “Now that we’ve finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about science?”
After a long wait, a boy put up his hand, “Have you ever seen a grasshopper(蚱蜢) eat? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?” This began a lot of questions that lasted nearly two hours.
Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after asking a question, many teachers usually wait only one second or less for an answer, no time for a child to think. When teachers increase their “wait time” to three seconds or more, children give better answers.
But in talking about science, these words make a child think that the discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying, “That’s interesting” or “I’ve never thought of it that way before”, or coming up with more questions or ideas.
Lastly, show; don’t tell. Let children look at their hands through a microscope(顯微鏡), and they’ll understand why you want them to wash before dinner….
36. To help children enjoy science, the most important thing for teachers to do is ___________.
A. let them see the world around B. let them study in modern labs
C. tell them the difficult terms on science D. share the children’s interests
37. In the last sentence of the second paragraph, the words “your lists” mean ____________.
A. your answers to the questions B. your own questions about science
C. your questions from textbooks D. all the questions of your own
38. According to the passage, children can give better answers to the questions if teachers ____.
A. ask them to answer quickly B. wait for one or two seconds after a question
C. tell them to watch their language D. wait at least three seconds after a question
39. The writer talks about all of the following ways except that teachers should ____________.
A. tell their children stories instead of telling them to remember facts
B. offer their children chances to see things for themselves
C. allow enough time for their children to find answers to the questions
D. encourage their children to ask questions of their own
40. The writer of the passage is probably ____________.
A. a teacher B. a scientist
C. a seven-year-old boy’s father D. a reporter
