【題目】 Many of the world’s successful people were once failures. Here are the stories of a few of them.

Michael Jordan (born 1963) is one of the greatest basketball players of all time. However, he himself admits that it hasn’t been easy. In a famous advertisement for Nike, he says, “I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted(委托) to take the game winning shot, and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

Albert Einstein (1879-1955) won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1921. However, he wasn’t always considered a “genius”. He didn’t speak until he was four, and couldn’t read until he was seven. His teachers and parents thought he was slow, and he was expelled(開除)from school. He later famously said, “Success is failure in progress”

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was one of America’s greatest leaders, taking the country through the Civil War(美國南北戰(zhàn)爭). However, his life was never easy. He started numerous business that failed, he went bankrupt(破產(chǎn))twice and was defeated in 26 campaigns(競選)for public office. He later said, “My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with your failure.”

J.K. Rowling (born 1965) is the author of the hugely successful Harry Potter books, and one of the richest women in the world. But before publishing the books, she was penniless, depressed and trying to raise a child on her own. In a speech at Harvard in 2008, she said, “I had failed so greatly. After a short-lived marriage, I was jobless, a lone parent, and as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless. The fears that my parents had had for me, and that I had had for myself, had both come to pass, and by every usual standard, I was the biggest failure I knew.”

So you see, just keep going!

Ask Angela

Many newspapers have an advice page. So does the school newspaper of Xinhan Middle School. Angela Wang is the editor responsible for the page. Students like to write to her for advice.

Dear Angela,

Im 16 and I want to leave school this year. My parents say it is too early and that I should be trying to get into high school. I want to work at McDonalds. Then I can start earning money to buy things.

Jane

Dear Jane,

Your parents are right. It would be better if you can complete as much of your education as possible. Real independence wont come from earning 150 yuan a week. It will come from the qualifications(資歷、學(xué)歷)and experience that you would gain by staying at school for a couple more years.

Angela

Dear Angela,

My parents and I have been fighting a lot recently. I’m 16, but they still treat me like a kid. My mom calls me 20 times if I don’t get home before 7 p.m. I tried talking to them about this, but they never change. What can I do?

Jim

Dear Jim,

Being angry and standing against your parents will not solve the problem. Try communicating with them from their point of view. Make a list of things you wish to do and another list of your parents possible concerns about them. Let your parents know you have learned to be responsible for yourself.

Angela

Dear Angela,

I am having an issue with my Chemistry teacher. She is super nice to my classmates but behaves completely differently towards me. She blames me for things I didnt do. What should I do?

Dear Mike,

In a situation like this, youd better speak to the teacher directly. This way, you can understand why she has a different attitude towards you. Our personal bias(偏見)might influence our thoughts about other people. Make sure the way you feel the teacher treats you isn’t influenced by any bias.
