What is the best-selling book in the world? Is it the Harry Potter series or Secret Garden? According to the Guinness World Records, the Xinhua Dictionary, published by the Commercial Press in China, is the world’s most popular dictionary and the best-selling book.
In 1950, Chinese language experts(專家) and scholars, Wei Jiangong and Ye Shengtao, started to edit(編輯) the Xinhua Dictionary. There was a lot of discussion, research and paper work. Some hand scripts (稿件) were checked again and again like compositions, People's Daily reported. Many people's hard work and interesting stories went into making the dictionary.
In 1953, the first Xinhua Dictionary was published. Today, 567 million copies of the dictionary have been sold worldwide
However, revisions (修訂) to the dictionary continue to be made. According to Yu Guilin from Commercial Press, editors(編輯) usually summarize (總結(jié)) the meaning of words again while revising. If the example sentences are out of date, editors need to have experiences and make new examples. “To give a correct explanation of the word ‘焗油 (deep condition)’ , one editor went to a barber shop (理發(fā)店) to experience it for himself,” Yu told the Beijing Times. So far, the Xinhua Dictionary has been revised 11 times.
To keep up with the times, some popular and widely used internet words are also added to the dictionary. For example, in the 11th edition, the phrases “曬工資 (show off salary)” and “曬照片 (show off pictures)” were included.
All these efforts create the “National Dictionary” of China. The Xinhua Dictionary is not only a useful tool for generations of Chinese people. It also helps foreigners who are learning the Chinese language and culture.

第一節(jié):閱讀短文,回答問(wèn)題。
Red squirrels used to be a common sight in British forests and countryside. But there are fewer than 140,000 red squirrels left now and most of them are in Scotland. However, grey squirrels (introduced from North America) are now so common that many people dislike them. They can be legally(合法的)trapped and destroyed.
On first sight, the two types of squirrel are similar. They both have a long tail, which helps the squirrel to balance when jumping from tree to tree, and the same large eyes, small ears and powerful back legs. However, the grey squirrel has a clear physical advantage over the red. The red squirrel has a head-and-body length of 19 to 23 centimeters, a tail length of 15 to 20 centimeters and a body weight of 250 to 340 grams. Compared to this, the grey squirrel is a larger animal. The head and body measures between 23 and 30 centimeters long and the tail is between 19 and 25 centimeters long. Adult grey squirrels are heavier, weighing between 400 and 600 grams. This size allows them to store more fat and helps them to survive a hard winter, which would be fatal(致命的)to their smaller cousins .
So why are red squirrels losing out in competition with grey squirrels? Size is one factor, but there are others. Red squirrels live high up in trees, while grey squirrels spend more of their time on the ground. This means any loss of forests greatly influences the red squirrel population. Another reason for the grey squirrel’s success is its ability to use food provided by people. Like the fox, the grey squirrel can survive in towns and cities. The other problem for the red squirrel is disease. Both squirrels carry a certain virus. While this doesn’t seem to attack grey squirrels, it is fatal to red squirrels.
【1】Which are introduced from North America, red squirrels or grey squirrels?
【2】What helps the squirrel to balance when jumping from tree to tree?
【3】How much do adult grey squirrels weigh at most?
【4】Who are the “smaller cousins” mentioned in the second paragraph?
【5】There are four reasons why red squirrels are losing out in competition with grey squirrels. Please list TWO of them.(每條不得超過(guò)4個(gè)單詞)

Many people believe that technologies(技術(shù))are great for learning. Today, teaching tools such as PDAs (掌上電腦)are used in a lot of subjects, such as English, History and Science.
Many teachers are supporters of using PDAs in language learning. There are several advantages(好處).They say students can have more time for discussion in the classroom because they can get ready for their lessons with the help of PDAs. For example, they can listen to articles at home. They also say that PDAs can help students learn without teachers' help. Some students might need to listen to an article many times to understand it. They can use PDAs to listen to it again and again.
The students are also happy to use PDAs. They think using PDAs is an enjoyable way to learn. It will make the classes much more interesting. And they can learn more in class. Teaching notes are stored in their PDAs and easy to find.
However, many parents complain(抱怨)that PDAs are doing harm to students. They worry that students will use them to download(下載)teaching notes and use them to cheat(作弊) during exams. If a student spends more time on a PDA, he will have less time to talk with teachers and classmates.
In a word, education needs to make changes with times as technology is playing an important part. Let's look forward to a wonderful future when PDAs and other technologies can add a lot to the classroom.

Great white sharks have become well known in a bad way, for being scary. 【1】. However, you are more likely to be hit by lightning than attacked by a great white shark.
One reason why people don’t like great white sharks is that they are huge. They grow to be nearly 21 feet long and can weigh up to 5,000 pounds. That is about two cars long! But the size is not typical. Most great whites are smaller, about 10 to 15 feet long. 【2】 .
Great whites are called apex predators(捕食者)because they are at the top of the food chain. They have no predators and aren’t that picky about what they eat. Great whites are known to eat fish, squid, other sharks, otters, turtles, dolphins, whales, seals, and sea lions. 【3】 . Great whites also eat carrion, which is the remains of dead animals floating(漂。﹊n the water.
【4】 . They have 3,000 teeth, and each is up to 3 inches long! Their very sharp teeth are shaped like triangles and have rough edges that tear into things. Great whites don’t even chew their food. They just swallow it down. 【5】 .
But, like other sharks, great whites don’t intentionally(主動(dòng)地)eat or attack humans. So swim without fear.
A. That’s still longer than one car, though.
B. Those last two kinds are their favourite food.
C. Movies and popular stories make them scary.
D. A big meal can satisfy a great white shark
E. Another reason why people fear great whites is their frightening teeth.
