Every weekend, Nyima holds a plastic bag of garbage, such as used water bottles, as she returns from home.
The garbage collected by the 14-year-old will be turned into stationary(文具), items like pencils and notebooks, she says. "It is a habit for us to pick up the garbage in the ground." said Nyima. "It is hard to find enough garbage for exchange now"
"It took me about one month to save up enough waste bottles to get something like a notebook," said Nyima. The boy students sometimes work together and wait for a long time in order to get larger items, such as soccer balls and basketballs.
Since 2015, a program called "Garbage for Stationery" has improved the school environment and made students care about the environment around them in six middle schools in the area along with ecology(生態(tài)學(xué)) and environment classes.Students have welcomed the program since it started.There are about 40 stationary items available for exchange. The school has spent about 20,000 yuan on the program, and some of the money has come from donations from society.
According to Nyiga, headmaster of the school, fighting poverty through education requires not only knowledge but also a sense of responsibility among future generations to protect the environment the local people rely on.
