【題目】Working vacations are a popular way to see the world and a good way to make some money along the way. Bill Tyler, a reporter, talked with Jenny, who just came back from a working vacation in Australia.

Bill: So how was your trip?

Jenny: It was fantastic (奇異的) ! The place I went to--Mildura, in Victoria State is known as the gateway to the outback(內(nèi)地). I was working at a vineyard(葡萄園) there, as a picker during the grape harvest. Most of the dried fruits in Australia like raisins (葡萄干) and so on, come from Mildura.

Bill: Was it hard work?

Jenny: Mm, yes, it was tiring and it got very boring sometimes. You have to spend around eight hours a day filling up buckets() with grapes. And it's a six-day week, usually with Saturday off. But the good thing is that you're working outdoors all the time. And you also get to make something really nice from all over the world.

Bill: So, do you have any suggestions for people who want to give it a try?

Jenny: Well, I'd suggest you only do it if you're quite healthy, and if you don't mind hot weather. Temperatures in Mildura can reach 25℃ sometimes, so you'll certainly need a sun hat. And don't forget a water bottle--it's thirsty work!

1If you like a working vacation you can not only travel, but also make some ______.

2Jenny thinks her trip in Mildura is______.

3It's really boring and ______ sometimes as a picker in the vineyard.

4You should be very ______ if you want to try the work.

5You should bring a sun hat and a water ______ because of the weather.

【題目】In order to tell what I believe, I must bring up something from my personal history.

The turning point of my life was my decision to give up my promising business job and study music. My parents didn’t think it was a good choice I took up music as a job. Considering my family background, this was understandable. My grandfather had taught music for forty years at Spring Hill College. Although he was much loved by his students, he didn’t earn(掙錢) enough to provide for his large family. As a result of this example in the family, my parents strongly asked me to the college instead of a music school, and so to college I went.

Before my graduation from Columbia, the family ran into some money problems and I felt it was my duty to leave college and find a job. That was why I took a business job, which I always think of as the wasted years. I went into it for money, for being able to help the family. Money is all I got out of it. It was not enough. I felt that life was passing me by. I became very sad.

My wish was to save enough money to quit(退出) and go to Europe to study music. I continued to make money, and finally, little by little, I saved enough to go abroad.

At that time, my family got out of the trouble. ____________, and so I gave up my position and sailed for Europe. I stayed four years, worked harder than I had ever dreamed of working before, and enjoyed every minute of it.

“Enjoyed” is too soft a word. I walked on air. I really lived. When I broke away from business, it was against the advice of all my friends and family, but if I had stayed in business, I do not believe I would have made a success of living.

Money is a wonderful thing, but now I know that it is possible to pay too high a price for it.

1The writer gave his grandpa’s example in order to ______.

A. show how great his grandpa was forty years ago

B. thank his parents’ support for studying in a music school

C. tell others that a musician wasn’t a good choice for the writer

D. explain why his parents disagreed him to take up music as a job

2Which of the following can be best filled in “_______”?

A. My dream came true at last B. I went on to practice the violin

C. My family no longer needed my help D. I made so much money to support my family

3The underlined sentence “I walked on air” means the writer______.

A. couldn’t find his place in a new environment B. couldn’t make a success of living

C. felt free because he was doing what he loved D. felt a pity for beginning new life

4What’s the best title of the passage?

A. Life in a Business World. B. Money Is Success.

C. Stick to Something in Your Life. D. Learning Music in Europe.

They’re not for everyone. Even summer days are cool and often windy. The water is too cold for swimming. There are only a few trees and green fields. Instead of fields, there are just rocks and small plants. The hills, too, are just piles(堆)of rocks. Sometimes the view(風(fēng)景) looks like pictures of the moon.

But there is beauty in this place. From the beach you can often see all the ways to the rocky hills. From the hills you can see far out to other islands and the open ocean. The colors, too, are special. Blue is everywhere. It’s in the sky and in the ocean. In the spring there is also green in the hills. In the summer and winter the hills are more purple.

On these islands you can forget about the rest of the world. The evenings are quiet. The restaurants close early, and there isn’t any nightlife. Visitors stay at a guest house or a bed.

Do not come to the Hebrides for shopping. Come to walk in the clean and cool air, and enjoy the quiet beauty and the views.

【題目】Millions of people across China will crowd onto trains and buses next February, hurrying home to be with their families for the country’s most important holidays, Lunar New Year, or the Spring Festival. February 15 marks the end of the Year of the Rooster and the beginning of the Year of the Dog.

History of the Holiday

According to an ancient legend, Buddha(佛祖)asked all the animals to meet him on Lunar New Year. Twelve animals came, and Buddha named a year after each one.

The Year of Good Luck

Buddha announced that people born in each animal’s year would have some of that animal’s personality. If you were born in 1970, 1982, 1994 or 2006, you were born in the year of the Dog. In ancient times, the dog is considered the best symbol for honesty and loyalty(忠誠). People who were born in these years are believed to be honest, brave and filled with good luck and strength. They are said to get along best with people born under the year of the Tiger, Rat or Horse.

Festivals, Lions and Feasts(筵席)

On Lunar New Year’s Eve, the Chinese celebrate with fireworks, family gatherings and festivals. One of the most popular ways to celebrate the holiday is with the lion dance. During celebrations, dancers dressed as lions perform. The dancers are supposed to bring good luck to people. People often wear red. Legend has it that red can drive away bad luck.

The 15-day New Year season is celebrated with firecrackers, dragon dances and visits to friends and family. The celebrations end with the Lantern Festival, when brightly colored lamps are hung in parks around China.
