Here is a two-way student exchange in action. Fred,19, spent last year in Germany with George's family. In turn, George's son Mike spent a year in Fred's home in America.

Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived. But after two months of studying, the language became easy for him. School was completely different from what he had expected and it was much harder. Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took 14 subjects instead of 6 that were usually taken in the US.

Family life, too, was different. The father's word was the law. All the activities were done with the family rather than individually. Fred found the food to be too simple at first. He also missed having a car.

At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his own ideas. Differences between American school life and German school life

I have taught many children who held the belief(看法) that their self – worth came from how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, performing well and winning are often life-and-death matters. Sadly, they forget to develop many other human qualities.

However, while some seem to wish to succeed very much, others think quite the opposite. They, especially young people have suffered from competitive stress from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often find that they choose to fail. They seem to choose failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” In fact, they are worried that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean they were worth nothing.

Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove their self – worth. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self – worth come from how well one performs in comparison(比較) with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. I suggest that they can discover a new meaning in competition only when such worries and fear begin to disappear.

Opinions about competition

Trust is very important in keeping any relationship strong and long lasting. If you trust the person whom you have a good relationship with and the other person also trust you in the same way, then you two have a good relationship.

You can remember important date of your friends such as their birthdays and wish them or give gifts to them on the special days. Many people say that money is the most important thing to consider, but remember friendship is not about money. You can find something small and inexpensive for their gifts or send online cards.

A friend should also always help others even when it is not very convenient. So have a helping hand ready at all times.

Sometimes distance makes relationships even closer. So, if you are far from your friends, there are many ways you can remain in contact. You can use email, chat programs, and you can also write a blog and share your daily life activities with your friends.

If there is anything that makes you happy, share it with your friends. Listen to their thoughts as well. If they have achieved something noticeable, congratulate them and celebrate with them.

I have seen good friendships and then there is unhealthy competition between two friends. Though this may not happen in many cases, it is better to keep this idea in mind since it may happen to you.

As far as I have seen and experienced, it will be better not to either lend to or borrow money from your good friend. Of course, we have to do this with friends. But, attention should be paid so that your friendship may not end.

How to Keep Your Friendship Stronger

Let’s face it: homework can be almost as frustrating (沮喪) for parents as it is for kids. Getting kids to do their homework can be a challenge, and when they do sit down to study, a lot of other problems can appear.

Doing homework may not be as fun as playing video games or chatting with friends, but it shouldn’t be something that kids hate. Your children’s assignments (任務(wù)) should help them build a skill or learn something new.

You can help by being a homework monitor, stepping in to answer questions or offer encouragement. This gives you a chance to see what they are learning and how well they understand the material. It helps you understand their learning style and shows you care about their education.

Many kids refuse to study by asking why they have to learn things they’ll never use in real life. If your son or daughter shows little interest in their assignments, you can make them seem more important by pointing out ways you use them in daily life.

If parents feel that their kids are overloaded (超負(fù)荷), they can talk about it with the teachers. If you think it takes your child too long to finish homework, try to make a decision whether the problem lies in having too much work or managing time poorly.

If your child complains of boredom while doing homework, give him or her the following suggestions:

Clearing about your reading purpose can not only help you choose the books you really need to read， but also remind you why reading the book is important to you， so you will keep reading and complete the book faster.

Read only what you are interested in

No matter what you are reading， it is important to enjoy what you read. Your friends may tell you the books they love， but those books might not necessarily be the ones you enjoy.

Give up the books that you don’t enjoy

You may have chosen books that you are interested in， and they are right to your purpose. But while you are reading them， there may still be some books that you don’t enjoy reading. Whenever you realize that you aren’t enjoying the book you are reading， give it up. Remember reading shouldn’t be a chore （令人厭煩的任務(wù)）.

It is interesting that I read the books borrowed from libraries faster than those I bought. The reason is that the books I bought don’t have a due date! I don’t need to return those books.
