A Small Red Ribbon
Everyone wants to win a first-place blue ribbon, to be the best in something.
Even little children in kindergartens(幼兒園) want that blue ribbon. In _________, I was never a blue-ribbon person. In a running ribbon competition, I was always the last. In baseball, I usually dropped the ball. During the spring of my kindergarten year, our class had a field trip to a park in a _________ about twenty miles away. Making that drive now very easy to do but when you’re six and you’ve lived in a town of 300 people all your life, going to a big town of a few thousand people is really something.
I don’t remember too much about it. But there was one that I will never forget — the three-legged competition. The parents tied(捆綁) our feet together. I was in pair with a little boy. He was very _________ at sports in our class. He usually won at everything but I didn’t. I knew that our pair didn’t have a chance to _________, and I’m sure he knew he was in trouble. The gun sounded(槍響了) and we were off. Some pairs were stumbling(絆腳) and falling all around, but we stayed on our feet and made it to the other side. _________, when we turned around and headed back, we were in the lead. There was another pair a few metres behind us. But only one pair had a chance to win.
A few metres from the finish line, something terrible happened: I stumbled and fell. We were so _________ to the finish line that my partner could have easily pulled me across the finish line and won. But he didn’t. He stopped, _______ down and helped me up — just as the other pair crossed the finish line. As a result, we received a small red ribbon for coming in second.
I still remember that moment when the young boy decided that helping a friend get on her feet was more important than winning a blue ribbon. And 13 years later, I still have that little ribbon because it tells me that a friend like this boy is the one who really _________ a lot.

A Juicier and Sweeter Apple
A father and his daughter were flying a kite in the park. The young daughter was a little bit tired, so they took a break on the bench(長凳). When the daughter saw an old man selling apples, she asked her father to buy her some apples. Her father didn’t bring much money with him, but it was enough to buy two apples. So he did, and gave both of them to his daughter, smiling.
His daughter held one apple in her right hand. Then the father asked her if she could share one of the apples with him. When the girl heard this, she quickly took a bite from one apple. And before her father could speak, she also took a bite from the second apple. The father was surprised. He wanted to know why his daughter acted in such a greedy(貪婪的) way. He was lost in thought. Suddenly, his daughter held up the apple in her left hand and said, "Daddy, take this one! It is much juicier and sweeter. Her father didn’t know what to say. He felt bad about making the judgment(判斷) so fast about a small child. So he smiled again, knowing why his daughter quickly took a bite from each apple.

How Can You Fight colds?
People usually catch a cold in the spring time and fall. It makes us question: if scientists can send a man to the moon, why can’t they find a treatment for the common cold? The answer is easy. There are hundreds of kinds of cold viruses(病毒) out there. You never know which one you will get, so there isn’t a treatment for each one.
When a virus attacks your body, your body works hard to get rid of it. Blood(血液) rushes into your nose and brings congestion(堵塞) with it. You feel terrible because you can’t breathe well, but in fact your body is “eating” the virus. Your temperature rises and you get a fever, but the heat(高溫) of your body is beating the virus. You might also have a runny nose to stop the virus from getting to your cells(細(xì)胞). You may feel awful, but in fact your wonderful body is doing everything it can to beat the cold.
Different people have different ways to fight colds. In Canada and some other countries, for example, people might eat chicken soup to feel better. Some people take hot baths and drink warm drinks. Other people take medicines to stop the fever, congestion and runny nose.
There is one interesting thing to note — some scientists believe that taking medicines when you have a cold is really bad for you. We know that bodies can do a great job on their own. Taking medicine can make the virus stay in you longer because your body doesn’t have a way to fight it and beat it. There is a joke on taking medicine when you have a cold. It goes like this: It takes about 1 week to get over a cold if you don’t take medicine, but only 7 days to get over a cold if you take medicine.
1.When having a cold, your body can eat the virus while ________ .
A.having congestion in the nose B.taking enough medicines
C.going to see a doctor D.drinking cold drinks
2.According to the passage, the writer may agree that ________ .
A.eating chicken soup is the best way to treat colds in Canada
B.the virus will stay in your body shorter if you take medicine
C.having a runny nose means your cold is getting more and more serious
D.feeling bad while having a cold probably means your body is doing a good job
3.The joke at the end of the passage means taking medicine ________.
A.is better than not taking it B.is really bad for your health
C.needs longer time to get well D.is the same with no medicine
