When I was growing up,I had an old neighbor named Dr Gibbs. He didn’t look like any other doctor I’d ever known. He was a very kind person. After he retired,he began to plant trees in his large garden. He wished to make it a forest.

The good doctor had some interesting ideas about planting trees. He never watered his new trees. Once I asked why, he said, "If you water them, each baby tree will grow weaker and weaker. Otherwise, they will have to grow deep roots to look for water under the earth by themselves. "

He planted some oaks, and instead of watering them every morning, he beat them with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the trees’ attention.

Dr Gibbs died two years after I left home. I always walked by his house and looked at the trees that I’d watched him plant about twenty-five years ago. They’re very big and strong now.

I also planted two trees several years ago. I carried water to them for a whole summer. I sprayed(噴灑)them. However, after two years of caring too much, whenever a cold wind blows in, they shake a lot.

Life is hard, whether we want it to be or not. What we need to do is try our best to make our roots reach deep into the brave heart, so when the rain falls and the wind blows, we could face them strongly and won’t be beaten down.

1.We can know from the passage that the doctor ______.

A.didn’t know how to plant trees at all B.wasn’t good at his medical job

C.had his own ways of planting trees D.had nothing to do but plant trees

A.He was strict with his neighbors. B.He was a doctor before he retired.

3.How did Dr Gibbs treat his trees? ______

A.He sprayed them. B.He shook them a lot.

C.He watered them every morning. D.He sometimes beat trees with a rolled-up newspaper.

4.Why did Dr Gibbs treat his trees in that way?

A.Because he wanted to make them grow better. B.Because he wanted to work off his anger.

C.Because he didn’t care about them at all. D.Because he wanted to make experiments on them.

5.What’s the main idea of this passage?

A.We should try our best to make ourselves strong enough to beat difficulties. .

B.We should beat trees with rolled-up newspapers.

C.We can’t grow up without our parents’ care.

Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, England on 8th January, 1942. He went to school in St Albans — a small city near London. Although he did well, he was never top of his class. After leaving school, Hawking went first to Oxford University where he studied physics, then he went to Cambridge University where he studied cosmology. As he himself admits(承認(rèn)), he didn?t work hard. He was a very lazy student, and did very little work. However, he still got good marks.

It was at the age of 20 that Hawking first noticed something was wrong with him. He started to bump (撞上)into things. When he visited his family at Christmas time, his mother was so worried that she made him see a doctor. Hawking was sent to hospital for tests. Finally, the result came back. Hawking had motor neural disease, an incurable illness which would make him unable to speak, breathe or move without the help of a machine. Doctors said they had no way to help him. He would die before he was 23.

At first, Hawking became very sad. After a while, though, he began to see his life in a different way. As he later write, “Before my illness was diagnosed(診斷), I had been very bored with life. There had not seemed to be anything worth doing. But shortly after I came out of hospital, I suddenly realized that there were a lot of worthwhile things I could do.” Hawking married, found a job at Cambridge University, and had three children. He also went on to do some of the most important scientific research.

Today, Hawking still works at Cambridge University as a professor. He strongly believes that his story shows that nobody, however bad their situation(處境) is, should lose hope. “Life is not fair,” he once said. “You just have to do the best you can in your own situation.”

Your body is special-no two people in the world are alike. Although you are different from everyone else, you have exactly the same body parts as the people around you, doing different jobs that keep all of us alive.

What is inside my head?

Your head houses the most valuable part of your body-your brain. As you are reading, your eyes send pictures to your brain which makes meaning from what you see. Your brain helps you to remember and think, and makes sure your body is doing what it should.

What is my skin(皮膚) for?

Your skin covers your body. In most parts of your body, the skin is just as thick as half a centimeter. Muscles(肌肉) are found in most parts of your body. They work with your bones to help you move-whenever you cry or smile, eat or speak, walk or dance, etc.

Why do I breathe?

Your body needs to take in oxygen from the air and give out the unwanted carbon dioxide in the body. When you breathe, air comes through your nose and mouth into your lungs(肺) where oxygen flows to different parts of your body.

What makes me sneeze?

When dust or a strong smell gets into your nose, you sneeze. This is the way your body cleans up the dust in your nose. Your lungs push out the air and try to clear your nose.
