Tom walked away from the school. He would never return. He was a lonely boy. Nobody loved him. He met his best friend, Joe Harper. Joe’s mother had beaten him. But Joe hadn’t done anything wrong. He also wanted to leave home. The two boys began to make plans. They both agreed to become pirates (海盜).
Five kilometers south of St Petersburg was an island called Jackson’s island. It was close to the other shore of the river. They decided to go there. They looked for Huckleberry Finn, and he joined them at once. They decided to meet on the river bank three kilometers from the village at midnight. Each would bring tools for fishing, and whatever they could steal — like those bad guys.
Tom arrived with a boiled ham and a corn, Joe had some bacon, and Huck had a frying pan, all stolen from home or their neighbors. They took some fire from an empty boat, and then they set off on the raft (木筏). At about 2 a.m. they landed on Jackson’s Island, and carried their only possessions onto the shore. They decided to sleep in the open air. That was what pirates did.
They built a fire, cooked some bacon for supper, and ate half of the corn they had brought. It seemed wonderful to be eating in the wild forest of an undiscovered island. They said they would never go back.
“It’s just the life for me,” said Tom, “You don’t have to get up in the mornings and go to school, and wash all those foolish things. A pirate doesn’t have to do anything.”
Huck asked, “What do pirates do?”
“Oh, they take ships and burn them. They get money and bury it in places where nobody can find it. And... kill everybody on the ships,” said Tom.
Slowly their talk stopped. Huck slept easily. Tom and Joe had more difficulty getting to sleep. Their conscience (良知) started to work. They began to fear that it was wrong to run away, and they thought of the stolen meat, and worried that it was bad to steal.
1.Why did the boys want to leave?
A.They were uninterested in their study.
B.They felt they were not loved by others.

D.Floating on the sea allowed them to learn more.
2.How did the boys get to Jackson’s Island?
A.In a boat. B.By ship. C.On a raft. D.By swimming.
3.What can we learn about the island?
A.It was easy to find food on it.
B.There was nobody else on it.
C.There were no trees or animals on it.
D.It was a good place to become pirates.
4.How did Tom and Joe feel after they stopped talking about pirates?
A.Sleepy. B.Embarrassed. C.Ashamed. D.Relaxed.
5.What might Tom most probably do the next day?
A.He would go back home.
B.He would become a pirate.
C.He would sail to other islands.
D.He would pay back what he stole.

It became very successful. Carrol wrote some more stories and in 1871 published Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There.

Comfort. Safety. Favorite family memories. Future. Root. We asked our readers to share with us the keywords they thought of for their home. Here are some our favorite answers.
“Home is a place, where you and your family can be safe, have all you need, and share your sadness and happiness, where you can help each other as a family. It does not matter how big or small. I live in a small room with my two sons, and we share our thoughts.”
— Honey
“Since 2007, I’ve built four homes with Habitat for Humanity families. The common point that each family has is: faith, hope, family, school, love, even future struggles. Home gave these four great families a safe place out of dangerous living conditions so they could think about the future as well as the present.”
— Chad
“Home is a comfort place to live with our families and pets and enjoy with friends, a place to build memories as well as a way to build future wealth (財(cái)富). A place where we can truly just be ourselves. And whether our houses are big or small, they are our shelters.”
— Linda
“Home is my root. When I was a little kid, my parents never had their own place. With 5 kids, my dad worked 7 days a week 12 hours a day; mom worked off and on, always running to get another job. We went from one place to another. I can remember one place we lived in had no bathroom, the windows were missing, and there were holes in the walls. So the first thing I did after I got a job was to buy an apartment where I could live forever.”
— Thomas
“Home means a future. Once we had a stable home, we could think beyond where we were going to live from week to week, and we could begin to look ahead to where we wanted to go. Home is the base where everything begins.”
— Kelly

A sea turtle climbed out of the ocean. It was just before midnight. It arrived to lay eggs.
Sea turtles have been doing this for 200 million years. Sea turtles lived at the time as the dinosaurs.
The sea turtle had to survive plastic rubbish, fish nets and oil spills to get here. There is another danger. The Earth has been getting warmer. This makes the sand hot. Warm sand makes the turtle eggs hatch (孵化) as females (雌性).
This is a problem. Female sea turtles are very important because they lay eggs. But male turtles are also needed to help make babies. Without enough males, sea turtles could die out.
Every year, sea turtles swim to Cape Verde. It is a country in West Africa. About 30000 sea turtles nest (筑巢) there. This is one-sixth of all of Earth’s nesting sea turtles.
Scientists from Great Britain studied the turtles there. They found 21 out of 25 young turtles were females.
“Males here will die out in 20 to 30 years.” said Adolfo Marco Llorente. He is studying the turtles on Boa Vista. It is one of Cape Verde’s island. Without males, the turtles cannot have more babies.
Businesses on Cape Verde are worried. Tourists come to see the sea turtles. The tourists buy local things like pottery. They would lose money if turtles died out.
Scientists have looked at sea turtles in other warm areas. There are more female turtles there, too.
84% of sea turtles hatchlings in Cape Verde are now female
This is worrying, so scientists have found ways to keep the turtle nests cool. Keeping the eggs cool means more male turtles can be hatched. One way is to move the eggs under the trees or bushes. Scientists have also put the eggs into smaller groups. Many eggs close together can heat up.
Llorente’s team collects the eggs in a bag. Then they bring them to a place on the beach behind a fence. The fence keeps animals away that want to eat the eggs. It also lets the scientists watch the temperature of the eggs.
1.Which sentence from the passage is the topic sentence?
A.Every year, sea turtles swim to Cape Verde.
B.Without enough males, sea turtles could die out.
C.The fence keeps animals away that want to eat the eggs.
D.The past five years have been the hottest years on Earth.

A.Higher temperatures make turtle eggs hatch as females.
B.Turtle eggs will not hatch if the temperature is too cold.
C.Turtle eggs are hatched as males when it cools down.
D.A female turtle lays more eggs if it is warmer.
3.Why do businesses on Cape Verde need turtles to hatch each year?
A.Because the companies earn money from selling turtles.
B.Because people there enjoy swimming with turtles.
C.Because turtles bring tourists and money to the area.
D.Because it helps to keep the temperatures cool.
4.Which place has the highest percentage (百分比) of female turtles?
A.San Diego. B.Boca Raton. C.Cape Verde. D.Great Barrier Reef.
5.Which is the way to help more baby boy turtles be hatched?
A.Put the turtle eggs in groups.
B.Move the eggs to cooler places.
C.Collect and keep the eggs in bags.
D.Watch and help the turtles lay eggs.
