Here are some of the most beautiful, creative and artificial islands that human has created.

Harbor Island(港島)

Built in 1909, Harbor Island was once the largest artificial island in the world.

It has an area of 395 acres and mainly an industrial and port area with train stations and some of Seattle’s sports stadiums.

Kamfers Dam

(卡姆菲斯大壩)

Kamfers Dam in South Africa is one of only six places in the world where Lesser Flamingos(火烈鳥) breed. The S-shaped island was built in 2006 as a shelter for the birds, which are attracted to the wetland’s high concentration of blue-green algae (水藻).

Peberholm Island

(佩博霍爾姆島)

It is a bridge/tunnel combo(連接體). It is a part of the Oresund Bridge that connects Denmark to Sweden.

It is off limits to people apart from biologists. Since the busy traffic is safely separated, Peberholm has become a home for numerous bird and plant species.

Hong Kong International Airport

It opened in July 1998 on the artificial island of Chek Lap Kok.

The southern gateway to Mainland China took years and $20 billion to build, increasing the land area of Hong Kong by 1 percent. As the third busiest airport in the world, the transportation hub carried more than 53 million passengers in 2011.

The name of our galaxy, the Milky Way, comes from its appearance. It’s a milky white band of glowing light that spreads across the night sky. If you look up at the evening sky, there’s a good chance you will not be able to see what your grandmother saw when she was a little girl. A new study says that nearly 80 percent of people in North America can’t see the Milky Way because of light pollution.

The most light-polluted country in the world is Singapore where researchers found that people living in the country never have the chance to experience true darkness. Other countries with large percentages of people living under such skies include Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

Too much light has a direct effect on human physiology and behavior. It can also destroy our sleep cycle. What’s more, it also affects wildlife. For example, baby turtles may not swim into the ocean because of street lights near shorelines.

In the U.S., some communities have been taking action on light pollution but in developing countries, people still want to make bigger, brighter light, like LED lights. They can save energy, but on the other hand, they will increase light pollution rapidly in fact.

There are still people that can remember when they used to be able to see the Milky Way, when they would walk outside at night, but those are becoming fewer and fewer.

Nighttime natural scenery needs protection just like daytime scenery. Don’t let the Light pollution rob us of the chance to experience the wonder of a natural night sky.

1.Why do we call galaxy the Milky Way?

A.Because our galaxy looks like that.

B.Because we look up at the evening sky.

C.Because Grandma often tells us the story of it.

D.Because many people in North America can't see it.

2.Which of the following countries is the most light-polluted?

A.Singapore. B.Qatar. C.Kuwait. D.The United Arab Emirates.

3.The writer talks about baby turtles ___________.

A.because the baby turtles are very lovely B.because they want to enjoy street lights

C.to show the bad effect of light pollution D.to help the animals to swim into the ocean

4.We may see this article in .

A.a travel guide B.a science magazine C.A news report D.a history project

A team of engineers at Harvard University has been inspired by Nature to create the first robotic fly. The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high-tech systems. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks.

“It’s extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just the sum of a bunch of individual components (元件),” said Robert Wood, the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade. A few years ago, his team got the go-ahead to start piecing together the components. “The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of those components are off the shelf (現(xiàn)貨供應) and so we have to develop them all on our own,” he said.

They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of interdependencie(相互依賴) on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but then has to be matched well to everything it’s connected to,” said Wood. The flight device was built into a set of power, computation (計算), sensing and control systems. Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured.

While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small, off-board (外置的) power source, the goal is eventually to equip it with a built-in power source, so that it might someday perform data-gathering work at rescue sites, in farmers’ fields or on the battlefield. “Basically it should be able to take off, land and fly around,” he said.

Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. “You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead,” he said. “So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day-to-day basis.”

1.The difficulty the team of engineers met with while making the robotic fly was that ______.

A.they had no model in their mind B.they did not have enough time

C.they had no ready-made components D.they could not control flight tasks

2.It can be inferred from paragraphs 3 and 4 that the robotic fly ______.

A.consists of a flight device and a control system

B.can just fly in limited areas at the present time

C.can collect information from many sources now

D.has been put into wide application

3.Which of the following can be learned from the passage?

A.The robotic flyer is designed to learn about insects.

B.Animals are not allowed in biological experiments.

C.There used to be few ways to study how insects fly.

D.Wood’s design can replace animals in some experiments.

4.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

A.Father of Robotic Fly B.Inspiration from Engineering Science

C.Robotic Fly Imitates Real Life Insect D.Harvard Breaks Through in Insect Study

Girls have more interest in digital literacy and styles such as Facebook, emails and text messages, while boys are more comfortable with traditional printed media such as comics, manuals(手冊) and newspapers, according to a study published by the National Literacy Trust.

The survey found that girls like to read outside more than boys at all age levels.

Overall, girls like reading better than boys, according to the figures compiled(匯編) by the trust. Boys seldom read books and think it less important to read, while girls have opposite opinions.

Nearly one pupil in four agreed with the statement: “My parents don’t care if I spend any time reading.” Jonathan Douglas, director of the National Literacy Trust, said: “More must be done to help parents realize what a difference reading with their children from a young age can make to their future.” “Parents needed to be told how important their engagement is for a child’s development.”

Cressida Cowell, the author of How to Train Your Dragon and a national literacy ambassador(代表), said: “Reading a book with a child, even an older child, is one of the most important things a parent can do to develop their child’s literacy(讀寫能力).

“I like to read a variety of books with my children and I think reading regularly is the key to writing well and broadening(擴大) communication skills.”

“Too many boys still seem uninterested in reading, and far, far too many children simply never become readers at all. So we writers and painters and storytellers, and parents and teachers, and publishers and booksellers, must continue to play our part,” said Michael Morpurgo, whose novel War Horse was one of the most popular books.

1.Which of the following is true?

A.Girls are more interested in reading comics and newspaper.

B.Girls like reading and read more often than boys.

C.Boys like to read emails and text messages.

D.Boys think it important to read books.

2.Paragraph 4 is mainly about ________.

A.Parents never care about children’s reading.

B.Parents don’t do anything to develop children’s literacy.

C.Parents should spend more time in reading.

D.Parents should be told reading with their children is important.

3.According to the passage, what is the most important thing for parents to develop children’s literacy?

A.Reading a book with classmates B.Reading a book alone

C.Reading a book at school D.Reading a book with a child

4.Why Michael Morpurgo ask writers, storytellers, parents and teacher to play their part?

A.Because boys have little time to read. B.Because boys aren’t interested in reading.

C.Because boys are interested in reading novels. D.Because boys like to read War Horse.

How to Make the Time for Your Personal Goals

One of the biggest challenges in trying to achieve any personal goal is that we want to put them off until tomorrow, or next week, in order to finish more important things at work and home. Maybe the following can help you find the time for your personal goals.

1.Make one goal at a time

Often the problem is that you try to make too many goals at once. You have a list of things you want to finish and because of that you never start. It’s very difficult to pay attention to too many goals at once. So catching one goal at a time is enough.

2. Be sure you really want it

It’s not enough to say, “It would be nice to learn French” or “It would be cool to do yoga(瑜伽) every morning”. It has to be something you really want. Ask yourself why you want to achieve this goal, and how much you want it.

3.Show that You’re serious

Tell as many people as you can about your goal. Write down your goal carefully. If you can’t even write it down, you’re not serious. Then write out a plan, with dates and actions. Think about problems, and write down your ways to solve them. The plan shows you’re serious.

4.Make it your top task

You all have many things to do in your lives, from school or work to family. If you put all these first, you won’t ever find the time for your goal. Instead, if we make our goal our top task, we’ll make the time.
