You may have heard of the famous saying, "East or West, home is the best.” What does the word "home" mean to you? How do you say the word in French, in Chinese, in your language? Although people usually know what the word means, it sometimes has no exact translation(翻譯). It's not surprising, because the idea of home is different from country to country, and from person to person. A home is more than a roof and four walls. It's the cooking, eating, talking, playing and sleeping that go on inside. And at home you usually feel safe and relaxed.
Homes look different in different countries. They also have different things inside. For example, in cold northern Europe, there's a fire in the living room or kitchen and all the chairs face it. In the south, where the sun shines a lot and it's more important to keep the heat out, there are small windows and cool stone floors.
We asked some people about their homes.
How often do people move house in your country?
"In my country many people don't stay in one place for a very long time. They often move every ten years or so. "
-- Chery, Boston, USA
What are features (特征) of homes in your country?
"In Britain, even in town, there's always a garden. We have separate bedrooms and living rooms. But we don't often have balconies (陽臺(tái)). The weather isn't warm enough! "
--Pat, Exeter, England

2.According to the passage, at home, you can do everything EXCEPT __________.
A. making friends B. cooking and eating
C. playing and talking D. sleeping and relaxing
3.Why is it important to keep the heat out of the houses in southern Europe?
A. Because the sun there shines a lot.
B. Because there's a fire in the living room.
C. Because they wear heavy clothes all day long.
D. Because they want to breathe fresh air outside.
4.From the second paragraph, what kind of homes people have depends on __________.
A. how old they are B. the climate(氣候)they have
C. whether they are rich or not D. whether they live in the city or countryside
5.What can we learn from the passage?
A. Homes look the same in different countries.
B. Some Americans move house several times during their lifetime.
C. People in Britain seldom have balconies because it's so hot outside.

Last week, I visited my friend Pete in his new home, where he lives with his wife and daughter. Pete used to spend his holidays traveling around the world – visiting the pyramids in Egypt or scuba diving (水肺潛水) in the Caribbean. Nowadays, he prefers to spend his holidays and weekends making his house look more beautiful. Like hundreds of thousands of other British people, he’s found the joy of DIY (do it yourself) home repairs. This means that if there’s anything that needs fixing around the house, he will try to do the job himself.
Pete showed me his new kitchen, which he put together himself, and his newly-painted walls. I asked him where he got the idea to do these things. He told me that his favourite source (來源) of ideas is a DIY program on TV.
This got me thinking about how popular DIY programs are in the UK. Each main channel (頻道) has at least one home or garden makeover show. There are even channels totally on the subject.
I suppose it’s not really surprising that DIY programs are so popular. There are two common sayings in Britain – “an Englishman’s home is his castle (城堡)” and “there’s no place like home” – which show how important our houses are to us. With the social changes of the last ten years or so, many people can’t afford to buy bigger houses. So they are looking at how they can make their house better without spending a lot of money. DIY, clearly, is the perfect choice.
1.Pete usually spent his holidays ______ in the past.
A. traveling round the world
B. visiting Egypt
C. diving in the Caribbean
D. building a new house
2.What do most British people enjoy doing nowadays?
A. Finishing their work at home.
B. Doing everything on their own.
C. Spending their spare time at home.
D. Doing the home repairs themselves.
3.How did Pete manage to make his house more beautiful?
A. He asked house builders for advice.
B. He got help from a DIY TV program.
C. He called some of his friends for help.
D. He paid workers to do the house work.
4.What does the underlined word “makeover” in Paragraph 3 probably means?
A. 修建
B. 交換
C. 修飾
D. 化妝
5.DIY programs have become popular because ______.
A. other programs are too boring to watch
B. people are spending more time watching TV
C. people can’t afford new houses any more
D. people are spending more time fixing their houses
