Many people thought that U.S. President Calvin Coolidge always lived in the White House. However, he sometimes lived in the nearby Willard Hotel.
Once, in the middle of a night, the President woke up to see a thief searching his clothes. Coolidge calmly spoke up from the darkness, “I wish you wouldn’t take that watch.”
“Why?” asked the shocked man.
Coolidged answered, “Take it near the window and read what is engraved(雕刻) on the back of it.”
The man read, “Presented to Calvin Coolidged, Speaker of the House, by the Massachusetts General Court.” He was very surprised!
“Are you President Coolidge?” he asked. He had never thought he would find the president sleeping in a hotel!
“Yes, I am.” Coolidge said. Then he asked, “Why are you doing this, Son?”
The young man explained that he and two friends traveled to Washington during their college vacation. They spent all of their money and had no money to pay the hotel bill and the train tickets back to school.
Coolidge added up the cost. It came to $32. That may not sound like much now, but it was a big number then. “I’ll give you the $32 as a loan(借款),” the President said, “And I expect you to pay me back.”
The young man thanked him. Coolidge left him with this warning: “Son, you are a nice boy, you are better than you are acting. You are starting down the wrong road. Just remember who you are.”
It wasn’t until after the death of Mr. Coolidge that this story was allowed to come out. It was first published in the newspaper Los Angeles Times. And the most interesting of all is that the President’s notes show that the young man was indeed better than he was acting. He repaid the $32 loan in full.

B. By looking at the loan

2.How did the young man travel to Washington with his friend? _________.

3.What can we infer(推理出)from the passage? _________.

B. The hotel cost was rather expensive at that time
C. The young man never kept in touch with the president again
D. The young man learned a lesson from his experience with the president
4.How did people first get to know the story of the president with the young man? _________.
A. From the president himself B. From a newspaper

Have you ever run into a careless mobile phone user on the street? Perhaps they were busy talking, texting or checking updates on WeChat without looking at what was going on around them. As the number of this new “species(物種)” of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name????phubbers.
Recently, a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight(聚光燈). In the short film, phubbers with different social identities always put themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his mobile phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes selfie(自拍照) in front of a car accident site(場(chǎng)地), and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone. A chain of similar events finally leads to the destruction(毀滅) of the world.
Although the ending sounds overstated(夸張), the damage(損害)that phubbing can bring is real.
Your health is the first to bear(承受) the effect and result of it. “Constantly(不斷地) bending(使彎曲) your head to check your telephone could damage your neck,” Guangming Daily quoted(引述) doctors as saying, “the neck is like a rope that breaks after long-term stretching(伸展).” Also, staring(盯著) at telephones for long periods of time will damage your eyesight gradually, according to the report.
But that’s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. At reunions(團(tuán)聚)with family or friends, many people tend to stare at their telephones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Qilu Evening News reported.
It can also cost you your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their telephones in broad daylight.

A. To warn doctors against using telephones while treating patients
B. To show the world will finally be destroyed by phubbers
C. To advertise the cartoon made by students
D. To tell people the bad influence of phubbing
3.Which of the following is NOT a risk a phubber may have? _________.
A. He might get divided from his friends and family
B. His neck and eyesight will be gradually harmed
C. He will cause the destruction of the world
D. His social skills could be influenced
4.Which of the following may be the author’s attitude(態(tài)度) towards phubbing? _________.
A. Supportive B. Against C. Active D. Favorable
5.What may the passage talk about next? _________.
A. Advice on how to use a telephone B. Ways to reduce(減少) the risks of phubbing
C. Results of phubbing D. People are crazy about phubbing

Everyone strongly wants to be a success. What is important for success? Most people think that confidence, hard work and enemies are main factors(因素) leading to success. Ronaldo said he believed he was a better player than Messi in an interview published in Spanish sports paper on Sunday.
Talking about his achievements of his career, Ronaldo showed pride. Ronaldo insisted that hard work was important to be a top player, though at times he felt a great pain for his training, saying a body “was not used” to training hard and playing twice a week. But no pain, no gain. He said he had changed his life to make sure he was in top condition, saying that when in the past he usually went out to relax, but now he “goes home to rest for tomorrow.”
