Qi Haoran, a Junior student, was quite busy over the past winter vacation and not just with his homework. Qi, together with other classmates made a volunteer group to call on people to join the Clean Your Plate Campaign (光盤行動(dòng)). The students went to many restaurants and told people the importance of saving food. "Excuse me, do you know that nine million people around the world still haven't got enough to eat? Could you please not waste food?" They would say this kind of thing hundreds of times every day.
China in recent years has experienced serious problems with wasted food. CCTV reported in January that the food Chinese people waste every year is enough to feed 20 million people for a year. It's a tradition that Chinese people offer lots of food when they invite others to dinner. Many even feel that they will lose face iftheir guests have eaten all their foods
Luckily the campaign has got the support of many. In a restaurant in Xinjiang, the owner gives the guests who have eaten up all that they ordered a sticker. People can enjoy a free meal when they have ten stickers. More than seven restaurants in Beijing have begun to offer smaller dishes and encourage their guests to take leftovers (剩飯剩菜) home.
Wasting food is a serious problem around the world, not only in China. It's said that two billion tons (噸) of food ends up as waste every year. This is as much as half of all the food in the world. The UN Environment Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization held a "Think, Eat, Save" programme on 2 January to help reduce food waste.

(2017﹒內(nèi)蒙古赤峰)One pleasant New Year morning, Edward got up and dressed himself in a hurry. He wanted to be the first to wish a happy New Year.
He looked in every room, and shouted "Happy New Year" to every one of his family. Then he ran into the street to repeat it to those he met. When he came back, his father gave him two new dollars. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some nice books.
As he ran down the street with a light heart to the bookshop, he saw a poor German family—the father, mother and three children walking in the cold wind.
"I wish you a happy New Year, "said Edward, as he was happily passing on. The man shook his head. "You do not belong to this country?" asked Edward. The man shook his head again, because he could not understand or speak English. But he pointed to his mouth, and to the children, he seemed to say, "These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time."
Edward quickly understood that these people were poor and in trouble. He took out his dollars and gave one to the man, and the other to his wife. They said something in their language, which meant, "Thank you very much, and we will remember you forever."

(2017﹒江蘇南京)Many countries all over the world have National Parks. There are about 7, 000 National Parks around the world. Most of them protect natural settings as well as the plants and animals that live there, but a few are in towns and cities.
Are there National Parks in England?
There are nine National Parks in England. The first three were the Peak District, the Lake District and Dartmoor, which were all named as National Parks in 1951. Others followed afterwards, such as the North York Moors in 1952, the New Forest in 2005 and the South Downs in 2010.
Are National Parks in England the same as those in other countries?
Many National Parks around the world cover huge areas of land where nobody lives, but in England most of the countryside within them is useful for farming and other activities. As a result, National Parks in England include places where people live and work, as well as wild and beautiful areas where there is little sign or human life.
Why do visitors go to the National Parks?
There are plenty of activities to do in all of the National Parks in England. Visitors can walk or cycle, following marked route, and many of the parks organize activities for families.
Are there any problems in the National Parks?
There are about 110 million visitors to the parks every year, bringing many benefits to the areas but creating problems too. Many popular towns and villages can be swamped(充斥) by visitors. This results in overcrowded car parks and roads choked (堵塞) with traffic. Life can be difficult for people who live there, as more and more gift shops and cafes are opened instead of those everyday shops; in popular areas, house prices can become too high for local people making it hard for them to stay in the area.
Another major problem is litter. In the parks it is a particular(特別的) danger to animals. Broken glass can also cause fires by focusing the rays of the sun. When these start in wild places, they are much harder to control and can damage (毀壞) large areas very quickly.
How can people help?
All National Parks in England promote(倡導(dǎo)) the Countryside Code, which tells people how to take care of their environment. If these rules are followed, the National Parks will be protected and continue to give pleasure to many people for a long time.

A year ago I paid no attention to English idioms(習(xí)語(yǔ)), though my teacher said again and again that it was important. But soon, the importance of English idioms was shown in my experience.
One day, I happened to meet an Englishman on the road. I was very happy because I thought I could talk with him in English. And 1.. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner shook his head, saying, "You don’t say! You don’t say!" I was surprised. "Why?" I thought, "Perhaps this is not a proper topic. Well, I’d better change the topic." So I said to him, "Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? We Chinese people are proud of it! By the way, 2.?" "Certainly, everyone back home will laugh at me if I leave China without seeing it. It was great." I said, "The Great Wall is one of the wonders in the world. It is a place of interest." Soon I was interrupted again by his words, " 3.!" I couldn’t help asking, "Why did you ask me not to talk about it?" "Well, I didn’t ask you to do so," he answered, gently surprised.
I said, "Didn’t you say ‘You don’t say!’?"
4.. He began to explain, "’You don’t say!’ actually means ‘Really?’ It is an expression of surprise. Just like ‘Look out!’ means ‘Be careful!’ Perhaps you don’t pay attention to English idioms."
Only then did I know I had made a fool of myself. 5.. Remember: what our English teachers say to us students is always right. We should listen to them!
A. You don’t say
B. soon we began to talk
C. have you ever been there
D. Hearing this, the Englishman laughed to tears
