Yu Minhong, president of New Oriental Education, shared his ideas with the young after the English speech competition of the 14th China Daily. Here is some of his advice to young people:
“One suggestion I’d like to give you is that it’s important to do what you like without fear of failure. And the process(過(guò)程)of working toward your dreams matters more than the results. Young people should take chances to show off talents. Take competitions like this one as an example: If you are afraid to fail, you’ll never get the chance to stand on the stage and make a speech. Above all, it’s most important to take part.
Another suggestion I want to give you is to read books. It is not easy to keep reading every day. For me, it is much more difficult and challenging to keep reading and taking notes every day than it is to walk 10,000 steps.”
In his speech, Yu also shared his view on life. He chose a different life rather than a more successful one. He uses the famous lines of American poet Robert Frost (1874–1963) to make his point:“Two roads diverged (分叉) in a wood, and I … took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”Yu pointed out, “Your happiness should not be what others think you should run after, but instead you should decide what it is. It is you who should make choices for your own life.”

If we agree that education is used to prepare us for life, then there is very little time to waste. So, while we can, we should teach children something really useful. Here is what our school should teach.
Politeness is a mark of civilization(文明). The sooner children learn this, the better. In any case, a lot can be achieved by a smile and good manners. Like it or not, our adults work hard for money, but we don't make an effort to teach children how to manage it. So our schools have a duty to teach them this ability from the beginning.
We're likely to accept something we are told, but that's not what educated people do. Educated people are reasonable and they look at facts. If our schools teach nothing else, they should at least teach critical(批判性的) thinking.
Children should learn to take care of their health. They should know that if they eat junk food, they will become fat and unhealthy. They should be very clear about what happens to their bodies when they drink or smoke.
All of us are part of society. We have rights and duties. We should understand what they are. We have to know a little bit of history and geography, because we need to have an environment in which to communicate with the people around us.
In a word, our schools should spend every moment they have telling this to our children: “This is life, this is what you are going to face, and this is how you deal with it."

It’s a big challenge for you to complete any personal goal in time. And it always seems that you won’t have enough time to finish all you need to do. Do you know the way to make the time for your goal? Here are some tips which may help you. Focus on(集中) one thing at a time. Remember not to take on too many goals at a time, or your energy will be used up soon. Once one goal is finished, you can go to the next one. Set up at least a month per goal.
Prioritize(優(yōu)先處理)the most important. We have more than one thing to complete. If we put all the things before our goal, we won’t ever find the time for it. If we put our goal at the first place, we’ll make the time.
Keep your goal simple. It’s important not to make your goal too difficult. If you want to be slim, for example, you just need to develop the habit for your health, walking each day (or running, or cycling etc), drinking more water, eating fruits and vegetables instead of junk snacks.
Shut your door. Try to set a time that you won’t be disturbed (打擾). If you are disturbed from time to time, you really don't have the time to help out. So you must shut your door when working on the most important tasks. If so, you will get them done better.
Stop wasting time. In our daily life, there are many things wasting your time, such as watching drama series and going to bars. If you don’t do them, it won’t make a great difference to your life. So stop doing them to free up time for your goals.
If you follow the above, you will succeed in achieving your goal.

A language professor was explaining to her class that French nouns are grammatically designated as male or female. “Pencil, in French, is male; House, in French, is female.”
One puzzled student raised his hand and asked, “What gender(性別) is a computer?”
The teacher did not know, and the word wasn’t in her French dictionary. So for fun she divided the class into two groups and asked them to decide whether a computer should be a male or female noun.
Both groups were required to give four reasons for their recommendation.
The men’s group decided that computers should definitely be of the female gender because:
1.No one but their creator understands their internal logic.
2.The native language which they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible(無(wú)法理解) to everyone else.
3.Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory for possible later retrieval(檢索).
4.As soon as you buy one, you’ll find yourself spending half of your salary on accessories(零配件) for it.
The women’s group, however, concluded that computers should be male because:
1.In order to get their attention, you have to turn them on.
2.They have a lot of data but they are still stupid.
3.They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they are the problem.
4.As soon as you buy one, you’ll be aware that if you had waited a little longer, you could have a better model.
What Gender is a Computer? | |
Opinion | 1. |

Have you ever asked your relatives or friends if there is Wi-Fi in their houses? Have you ever searched for Wi-Fi when you are at restaurants or hotels? The answers will probably be "Yes". Most of us want Wi-Fi everywhere as if we can't live without it. But we can only use free Wi-Fi in some public places. We still have to spend some money accessing(連接)the Internet at most time. Here comes a piece of good news.
A rich, powerful organization in the USA called the Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF) has decided to change the age of online computing (計(jì)算) completely by giving free Wi-Fi to every person on Earth. They will send up hundreds of satellites into low Earth orbit(軌道)in 2015.
This is because they have made a survey and found that only 60% of the world's population have been able to get information on the Internet. And this is also because many countries are unable to offer people the necessary infrastructure(基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施)to access the web.
We can expect to use free Wi-Fi everywhere in the near future.
