Jia Meng used to keep a diary (日記) in Chinese. But one year ago, the 14-year-old girl from Hei Longjiang began to write her diary in English, because Jia found her mother was reading her diary secretly. She changed the language because her mother can’t read English. “It’s like killing two birds with one stone.” said Jia, “My privacy (隱私) became safe and my English improves a lot.”

Jia’s mother is not the only mom who reads her child’s diary. Recently, Renmin University of China did a national survey among over 2, 3000 parents. The reports say that 40% of parents read their children’s secrets. That’s why, like Jia, many teenagers try to find ways to protect their privacy.

Wu Lei, 15, of Shanxi, keeps a diary, too. But he doesn’t write it on paper. He writes on the Internet which he thinks is perfectly safe because his parents “know nothing about the Internet.”

Lu Huan, 13, of Guangdong, said her parents always secretly listened to the talk between her friends and her on the telephone in their room. To solve this problem, Lu asked her parents to buy her a mobile phone.

“Parents want to know what is going on in their children’s lives,” said Shao Xiazhen, a teenage expert in Beijing. “ But sometimes they go about it the wrong way.” Shao gave teenagers the idea that instead of hiding their secrets, talking to parents is a better way. “If your parents know that you are safe, they’ll let you keep your secrets.”

My grandfather did not live with us because he was a very busy man, helping the poor in a small town. But as the holidays drew near,he would take the train to visit his grandchildren for a few days during the winter vacation. My favorite part of the holiday was the trip my grandfather and I would make together every year on December 24. I love him for that.

Grandfather was the first one to own a radio in his town, a large box made of wood. He kept it in the Outer House, where he saw his patients and chatted with friends. My grandfather’s radio became the only way to learn the news of the Second World War.

He was also the first one to send a daughter(my mother)to college, an act that made the whole village surprised. For this reason, he was the person I could ask about anything. He knew

everything-----from the capital of France to how fish were able to breathe(呼吸)under the water.

This December 24, my grandfather andI walked together to Firpo’s. We discussed what to buy at Firpo’s as we walked. We ended up buying the fruitcake, the same as last year. Grandfather got me a cookie to eat on the way back. I asked grandfather a question that I 'd been thinking over for some time now. Why was Christmas called the Big day?

Grandfather was silent for a whole minute and when he finally spoke, his voice was slow. Christmas----the birthday of a very special soul, it was a day to grow big, he said.

“And how do you grow big in your heart, Grandfather?” I asked him.

He answered slowly and softly, as though I were the same age as he,”By doing something you think will make them happy. Something you don’t have to do, by putting their needs before yours at least once a day. It’s a good start for trying to live a big life.

1.When did grandfather go to visit his grandchildren?

A. He usually went every year on December 24. B. He usually went every winter.

C. He usually went when he was free. D. He usually went during winter holidays.

2.How did people in the town learn the news of the world?

A. By listening to Grandfather’s radio. B. By asking Grandfather.

C. By chatting with others. D. By listening to grandfather.

3.what surprised the small town many years ago?

A. The whole family left the town.

B. The writer’s mother was sent to a college.

C. Grandfather helped the poor in the town.

D. Grandfather and the writer had a trip around.

4.What does the underlined words”drew” mean?

A. ended B. came C. painted D. caught

5.In grandfather’s eyes, how did people grow big in heart?

A. By speaking slowly and softly. B. By doing things he liked.

C. By putting others’ need first. D. By knowing a lot from others.
