Everybody likes taking selfies (自拍照), from your best friend to your favorite pop star. Selfies are taking over Renren and Sina Weibo. The word “selfie” was even named Word of the Year by Oxford Dictionaries in 2013. But why do people feel the need to take them? And are they doing us more harm than good?

According to Dr. Pamela Rutledge, director of the Media Psychology Research Center in the US, posting a selfie shows a biological need for self-validation (自我驗證). Humans have an area in their brain that controls social activity. Receiving positive feedback (反饋) on a selfie you have posted can be the same as someone stopping you in the street and praising your appearance. The act of taking a selfie also puts you in a position of power. You are the director and the subject of your own work of art. It helps people feel in control of their self-image and can be a powerful tool.

But can it go too far? The experts warn that too much time spent on selfies can affect people’s confidence, particularly in teenagers. If you are spending a lot of time choosing the perfect selfie outfit (著裝) or finding the right angle (角度), then there could be a problem. Likewise (同樣地), posting selfies can harm your personal relationships. UK studies found that many people find it hard to relate to people who are often posting selfies.

So next time you catch your smartphone to take a quick selfie, it may be better to drop it straight back into your pocket.

1.What does Rutledge think of posting selfies?

A. It helps people get to know each other.

B. It helps people take better pictures.

C. It just lets people show off their new clothes.

D. It meets (滿足) people’s need for self-validation.

2.From Paragraph 2, we learn the following EXCEPT .

A. it needs some art to take good selfies

B. the brain controls people’s social activity

C. people want good comments (評論) on their selfies

D. taking selfies helps people feel in control of their self-image

3.The experts think spending too much time taking selfies can .

A. affect people’s confidence

B. give away people’s personal information

C. make people spend more on smartphones

D. cause people to spend less time with their friends

In some science fiction movies, evil robots refuse to die, no matter how hard people fight back.

Now science fiction has become science fact. For the first time, scientists have made a robot that can take a beating and keep on going. Scientists from Cornell University made the robot, which looks like a spider (蜘蛛) with four legs.

Until now, even the most advanced robot was almost certain to break down when it was broken. That is because its computer inside simply doesn’t know how to make the machine work after its shape has changed.

To deal with this problem, the scientists put eight motors (發(fā)動機) and two sensors (傳感器) that read how the machine is working. They all give signals (信號) to the machine’s software. Using this information, the computer can then work out the machine’s shape at any moment.

The new technology is a big advance in robot-making, scientists say, and it’s far from scary. It may someday help scientists create better man-made (人造的) arms and legs and give new freedom to people who lose them. It might also help scientists understand how people and animals work out their own sense of place in space.

“It has been difficult to design robots that can work well when the environment changes or when it’s damaged,” says Olaf Sporns of Indiana University in the US. “With this work, we are nearer to solving this problem.”

1.Why do robots easily break down when they are damaged?

A. They have no computers inside.

B. The computer has changed a lot.

C. They cannot repair themselves.

D. The computer cannot work if the robot changes.

2.The new technology allows the robot to .

A. do house work for humans

B. tell people where it is

C. remember a lot of information

D. keep working after being damaged

3.The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 5 refers to .

A. sensors B. arms and legs C. scientists D. robots

4.How do the sensors in the robot work?

A. They help the computer learn the robot’s condition.

B. They can find out where the damage comes from.

C. They can replace (替代) the computer when it’s broken.

D. They can send signals to the person who uses the robot.
