Are some people bom clever, and others bom stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. In some degree, our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no education can make a genius out of a child bom with low intelligence. On the other hand,a child who lives in a poor environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in a rich environment. Therefore, the limits (限度) of people's intelligence are fixed at birth. Whether he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This point of view now is held by most experts.

It is easy to show that intelligence is something that we are bom with. The closer the blood relationship between two people is,the closer their degrees of intelligence are. If we take two strangers by chance from the population,it seems that their degrees of intelligence will be completely different. If,on the other hand,we compare two twins, they are very likely to be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar degree of intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.

Imagine now that we take two twins and put them in different environments. We might send one,for example,to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this shows that environment as well as birth plays an important part. This result is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other but are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.

53. The limits of man's intelligence are fixed .

   A. at birth.

   B. through education.

   C. both at birth and through education.

   D. neither at birth nor through education.

54. According to the passage,if a child is born with low intelligence, what might happen to him later?

   A. He might become a genius.

   B. He might still become a genius if he should be given special education.

   C. He might reach his intelligence limits in rich environment.

   D. He might never reach his intelligence in his life.

55. What statement is TRUE in the passage?

   A. No education can help make a genius.

   B. Personality is as important as intelligence which was given to people at birth.

   C. People who have similar degree of intelligence must be relatives.

   D. Environment influences people in intelligence developing.

English surnames have an interesting history. In early times people had just one name that they were given at birth. It might have been John or Hilda, for example. One name was quite enough. If someone mentioned Hilda or John, everyone knew who was meant because there would be only one Hilda or one John in a tiny village. But as time went on,small villages grew into towns. Then there might be five or six Johns and five or six Hildas all living in the same place. How were people to know which John or which Hilda was meant then?

One way of getting over the difficulty was by adding the name of the work the person did. Thus the man who was a cook might be called John the Cook. The man who weaved clothes might be called John the Weaver. Second names or,surnames as we now call them, had come into being. At that time these surnames were given to a man's children. So John Weaver's children would, perhaps,be called Hilda Weaver and Charles Weaver. And this is how we still use surnames today.

Another way of telling one person from another with the same name was by adding the place where they lived. Thus the two men in the same village, both with the name of Tom,might be known as Tom by the Wood and Tom in the Field. This would give rise to such surnames as Wood,Field,Street,Tree,Pond,Lake,Forest, etc.

The origin of many surnames is easy to find. But how others started is difficult to know. Only scholars who have studied the history of words can tell the origin of the more difficult ones, and even then they can't always be sure.

Very few people came to eat at the White Rose Restaurant, and its owner did not know what to do. The price was reasonable and the food was of good quality, but nobody seemed to want to eat there.

Then he did something that changed all that, and in a few weeks his restaurant was always full of men with their lady friends. Whenever a gentleman came in with a lady,a smiling waiter gave each of them a menu. The menu looked exactly the same on the outside, but there was an important difference inside.
