There are seas, lakes and forests on the earth. There are cities, towns and farms, too. All these things
are environments. The environment is everything around you. It can be living (有生命的), like a forest.
It can be non-living (無(wú)生命的),   1   a rock or a mountain.
No living thing can live alone. Every living thing depends (依賴于) on other things in its environment.
When something   2  , it affects (影響) something else. If a non-living; thing like water becomes   3   to

environment, too. Some things that people do cause no change or only a small change in the environment.
For example, people can walk through the forest and just travel around. They can cut down only a few
trees and   6   change the environment very much. On the other hand, some things that people do
cause   7   changes. Sometimes they can change a whole environment by cutting down a forest.

But what would happen if we cut down all trees in all forests or if we didn't   8   them and plant something

Almost every day, we discuss the topic of health, especially for kids. But what is health? "Health" means
eating well, getting enough exercise, and having a healthy weight. Let's read the following rules. They can
help you stay healthy.
   1. Eat a variety of foods, especially fruit and vegetables. We all know that eating fruit and vegetables can
help us stay healthy, but many of us only eat our favorite foods. Remember that we can only get the
nutrition (營(yíng)養(yǎng)) we need by eating different kinds of food, especially fruit and vegetables.
   2. Drink water and milk most often. Everyone knows that water is important. Besides that, kids need plenty
of calcium (鈣) to grow strong bones, and milk has a lot of it. Every day, you should drink at least three cups
of milk(1300 milligrams of calcium), when you are 9 years old or older. You should also try to have less
sugary drinks, like soda and coca. They include a lot of sugar. Sugar just includes calories, not important
nutrition.
   3. Listen to your body. When you are eating, notice how your body feels. When your stomach feels
comfortably full, stop eating. Eating too much makes you feel uncomfortable. If you do it too often, it can
make you unhealthy and fat.
   4. Limit (限制) screen time. What's screen time? It's the amount of time you spend watching TV, movies,
and playing computer games. The more time you spend on these sitting-down activities, the less time you
spend playing sports, like basketball, and doing other activities like bike riding and swimming. Try to spend
no more than 2 hours a day on screen time.
1. In this passage, "health" includes all of the following EXCEPT (除了) ______.
[     ]
A. eating well
B. doing more exercise
C. having a healthy weight
D. wearing comfortably
2. The underlined phrase "a variety of" means ______.
[     ]
A. lots of
B. all kinds of
C. the rest of
D. a lot of
3. Which of the following is NOT true?
[     ]
A. Eating more fruit and vegetables is difficult for some people.
B. We should eat and drink something with less sugar.
C. When we are full, we should stop eating, however (不管怎樣) delicious the food is.

4. As kids, we should drink at least ______ to grow strong bones.
[     ]

D. one cup of milk
5. What's the main idea of the passage?

Many Americans have been leaving their cars at home and riding to work on bicycles. Andy Clark is the
leader of the League of American Bicyclists. His group supports bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation.

fuel or creates dangerous pollutions. Experts say the effects are the most important on short trips. The
Department of Transportation says fifty percent of Americans drive eight kilometers or fewer to work. Shorter
car trips set out more pollution into the air for each kilometer drive. This is because the car engine will set out
the harmful air when it warms up before it can work well.

governments and state highway transportation agencies are planning the roadways of the future. They are
creating roads and paths for bicycles in cities and between communities.

Do you know all birds protect themselves by always listening and  watching out for danger? At the
smallest sign of it,  they will fly away.  Birds that cannot fly are often able to swim fast, or run quickly.
Some birds make themselves look bigger and more dangerous by fluffing (抖動(dòng)) their feathers.
Another important protection for many birds is their colors. Their  feathers often have colors that
match the things around their nests  (巢). Some birds change colors with the seasons.  In the winter they
are white to match the snow.  In the summer they are brown to match the ground.
People sometimes kill birds without meaning to.When people cut down forests to build houses and
factories, they destroy the homes and food of birds. If the birds have nowhere else to go and nothing to
 eat, they will die out.
Pollution may cause some birds to die.  Birds that eat fish from polluted water get poison in their
bodies. Then they cannot lay healthy eggs.  New birds can't be born.
Now people protect birds by passing the laws to control hunting and pollution, by setting up some
special parks where all the birds are safe from hunters, and by teaching people to care about birds rather
than kill them.

How do birds protect themselves?

By 1.______.
By fluffing their feathers.
By having colors that match the things around
their nests.
By changing 2.______
Why do some birds die out?

People sometimes kill birds without meaning to.
3.______ may cause some birds to die.

In many parts of the world, however, people have not realized the  importance of trees to us.
Two thousand years ago, a rich and powerful country cut down its  trees to build its warships, with
which it gained itself an empire (帝國(guó)).  It gained the empire, but without its trees, its soil became hard

Even when a government realizes the importance of forests,  it is difficult for it to make villagers see
this.  The villagers want wood to cook  their food, and they can earn money by making things or selling
