Every year on my birthday, from the time I turned 12, a white gardenia (梔子花) was delivered to my house. No card or note came with it. I was delighted by the beauty and perfume (香味) of the flower. But I never stopped imagining who the giver might be. My mother helped me to imagine. She’d ask me if I had been kind to someone. Perhaps the neighbor I’d helped carry the groceries for. As a teenager, though, I had more fun thinking that it might be a boy I loved.

When I was 17, a boy broke my heart. The night he called for me the last time, I cried myself to sleep. When I woke up in the morning, there was a message on my mirror in red lipstick: “Heartily know, / when half-gods go, / the gods arrive.” I thought about those words from Emerson for a long time. When I finally went to get the glass cleaner, my mother knew everything was all right again. She did understand me.

One month before my high-school graduation, my father died of a heart attack. I lost all my interest in graduation, the senior-class play and the prom (畢業(yè)舞會). But my mother would not hear of my skipping (略過) any of those things. She wanted her children to feel loved and lovable, imaginative, believing that there was a magic in the world and beauty in the face of hard times. Actually she wanted her children to see themselves much like the gardenia – loveable, strong and perfect. My mother died 10 days after I was married. I was 22. That was the year the gardenias stopped coming.

Scientists have discovered the first Earth-sized planet. It was first marked by scientists’ using NASA’s Kepler telescope(望遠(yuǎn)鏡), so it’s called Kepler-186f. It lies about 500 light years from Earth and goes around its star. The planet is the right distance from its star for water: not too close or not too far. Water is one important condition that scientists guess is necessary for life. So it could have water and possible life. It’s called a true Earth cousin.

“This planet is an Earth cousin, not an Earth twin, ”said Barclay, who is among a team of scientists reporting on the discovery in the magazine Science this week.

“It’s very exciting to find a planet similar to the Earth, ”Barclay said. “It’s not easy work because things change as we get more measurements.”

Scientists don’t know anything about the air of Kepler-186f, but it will be a task for future telescopes which can study for chemicals that have something to do with life.

“It’s possible for life to live in this planet, but that doesn’t mean there is life in it,”Barclay said.

So far, scientists have found nearly 1, 800 planets in the universe.

“The past year has seen a lot of progress in the search for Earth-like planets. Kepler-186f is very important because it is the first planet that is the same temperature and is almost the same size as Earth, ”scientist David Charbonneau wrote in an email.
